Palace wants a new jet for Arroyo

MANILA, Philippines—After chartering commercial airlines for the past eight years, it’s about time President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo procured another executive jet for her and successors’ travels, Malacañang said Friday.

Gary Olivar, presidential economic spokesperson, defended the Office of the President’s (OP) decision to procure a presidential executive Jet worth a whopping P1.2 billion.

“It’s merely a purchase that would benefit not just the President but her successors,” he told reporters in a Malacañang briefing.

The OP Bids and Awards Committee put out an ad Thursday in a broadsheet (not the Inquirer) inviting aircraft manufacturers, distributors and integrators to bid for the acquisition of one presidential fixed-wing executive jet.

The specifications are: it must be “factory new,” twin-engine, pressurized, equipped with instruments compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization and Federal Aviation Administration standards, and fitted with auxiliary power unit and in VIP cabin configuration.

It should have been used as VIP/ executive aircraft by the country of origin and by at least two countries, the OP-BAC said in the ad.

The approved budget for the contract is P1.2 billion, it added.

Olivar said that the Presidential Airlift Wing (PAW) has two fixed-wing aircraft—F-28 and F-27—but these are “old” and difficult to maintain.

“The Presidential Airlift Wing believes that it needs at least two fixed-wing jets for presidential visits, one primary and one back-up. Right now there is only one available, the F-28. And she charters civilian aircraft for her airlift requirement. This can be very costly and poses high security risk,” he said.

Unlike the F-28 and F-27, the executive jet is equipped with modern technology to ensure safety in all aspects of the flight, according to the OP.

ewan ko kung nag iisip sya but, last time i checked, it's cheaper to just buy a damn airplane ticket than to buy a jet + sign a deal with the contractor + do some maintenance check on the engines + buy spare parts + buy airline fuel + buy in-flight food + hire cabin attendants + pilots + pay extra airport fees AND airline depreciation notwithstanding..
