Band: Motley Crue
« on: August 15, 2009, 02:37:52 pm »
Would like to start a topic about heavy metal, but I think there's one out there somewhere, so I opted to focus on one of my favourite bands, Motley Crue. Haven't bought anything after Dr. Feelgood, unfortunately (thanks to our rather lame music industry here, which only focuses on boy groups [I refuse to call such as bands, since 3/4 of them can't even play instruments if their life depended on them]), and whatever CD that does come out is hard to come by. Anyway, this was heavy metal as it's meant to be before all the growling, death metal bands came along: fun and actually worth listening to. Too bad most metal bands now try to sound and growl like James Hetfield.

Yup. Home Sweet Home, as originally sung by Motley Crue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y5-886Ciek

I'd like to know more about them please. :) What's your most recommended songs by them? I've been backtracking/exploring "new" old music, and I started with as far as classic rock, blues-rock, and some folk. I haven't gotten around to listening to any heavy metal yet, so I guess Motley Crue would be a good start? :)

Recommended songs--personally, I would recommend most of the songs from their album, "Dr. Feelgood". Songs I like there are Dr. Feelgood, Kickstart My Heart, Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.), Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go), Without You, Time For Change. I guess that's most of the album itself.

Here are the songs in their concert, "Lewd, Crued and Tattooed": Dr. Feelgood
Kickstart My Heart
Same Ol' Situation
Don't Go Away Mad

Whew. Ok, I think I can feel a headache coming... lol Maybe if I heard the non-concert versions I'd appreciate them better, but thanks, really. I'll give this band another try sometime, maybe when I'm in a better mood. Hehe!

Thanks again. :)

Non-concert versions of the songs:

Dr. Feelgood
Kickstart My Heart
Same Ol' Situation
Don't Go Away Mad

And yes, that's the Dr. Feelgood album cover there.

Hhmm...now why did those gave you a headache?

Ahhhh... now that is so much better!! Thanks man ;)

I guess the concert version had too much distortion for me (probably coz of the sound quality haha)

Man... this band is good. 80's good stuff. Thumbs up and a cartwheel for awesomeness :) :) :)

Don't Go Away Mad is a sarcastic bittersweet breakup song. hahaha I love!!
I like Kickstart My Heart and Dr Feelgood.

This totally made my day. THank you!!

Sino ba kasabay nilang sumikat? What are other late 80's bands of the same genre? thanks ;)

Kasabay nila--madami. All of them became great--Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Poison, Warrant, Skid Row. That's just some of the popular rock acts of the 80s and 90s.

Nice that you liked Dr. Feelgood and Kickstart My Heart. If you liked the final studio version, then listen as well to their demo versions; these demo versions were not originally included in the final album back in 1989, but when the CD was reissued some of the demo tracks were included.

Kickstart My Heart (demo)--weird that the album cover shown here is "Shout at the Devil" released in 1983...
Dr. Feelgood (demo)

Yeahhhh, I was reading up on them in AMG and I found out, dito pala galing si Tommy Lee!!!! I never knew that until now. lol and yea, I can honestly say I could hear a little bon jovi in some of their songs. that explains the similarity :)

If I didnt see their concert videos, i would've never imagined they were one of the glam rock bands with the psycho outfits and crazy hair like poison. haha! but i must not fail to mention how handsome and delicious(lmao) richie kotsen (sp?) was back in the day. ;D

I think you also picked the perfect songs to recommend to a first-timer, coz their other songs weren't as distinct as the ones you that mentioned. :)

and just to prove how i've become an instant fan of 'the crue' (hahaha) i learned the chords and the words to "home sweet home" on the piano. i think i can already play the first verse to the chorus with my eyes closed. ;D

so is the Dr. Feelgood album the best that they came up with?
sidetopic: did you see that Rockstar series called Supernova (after INXS)? Tommy Lee was there. I think that's where I first saw him. lol

-----

Hala, i cant tell the difference between the album and demo versions. lol anyway, thank you for the links!! :) :) :)

and! im already downloading the songs that you recommended ;)

soundtrip! more threads on good music please! :D

Dr. Feelgood is one of their best albums to come out; if you go to the Crue's site, items from that album are still prominently sold, which shows how big this album is for Motley Crue.

Wow--great you liked the Crue! It's never too late to become a fan.  :)

Too bad I wasn't able to follow the Rockstar series--I just saw the INXS one, since at that time I think I was busy.

More to recommend? Well, I like Judas Priest as well. They're real hard, and I wish metal bands today still perform this way instead of just growling on from one song to another. My favourite Judas Priest album, "Painkiller", and a song from there, "Hell Patrol"

Speaking of Kotzen, here is the Kotzen version to the famous Mr. Big song, "Green Tinted Sixties Mind"

Another thread I made about a band, this time about the hardcore band The Dead Kennedys: http://www.candymag.com/teentalk/index.php/topic,188651.0.html

Yep, never too late to appreciate old but good music!

Oh wow, dami kong natutunan ah, lumipat pala si Kotsen sa MrBig. But I have to say, I still like the original better.. or maybe that's because mas nasanay ako dun sa shreds ng original? or pareho lang ba? hehehe parang mas malinis pa nga yun kay Kotzen noh? or im not too sure... and omg, Richie kept the hair talaga ha! Tapos blonde na! he's still hott though! :D

Mukhang mas magaling yata Judas Priest kysa Motley ah? hehehe
I never thought Id say this but I kinda like heavy metal-80's style! ;)

Judas Priest, Angel - sad.. but brilliant song. i love it!!

:) Nice. I hope more people will be able to appreciate the 80s and 90s; IMO music then was great, but then again each generation says the same thing hehe!

There are differences between Ritchie and Paul Gilbert's renditions. Subtle, actually. Casual listeners won't probably notice it but those who have an ear for music will be able to detect them.

Judas Priest's style is quite different from Motley Crue's, which makes their sound harder. Judas Priest actually influenced the later speed metal bands. Hhmm...looks like I need to open a Judas Priest thread.  ;D

I really love this band; their sound is quite distinct in the metal community. You'll easily know it's  Judas Priest song once you hear it.

I listened to Paul Gilbert's version again, and I still think he does it better than Kotsen. :) of course, they're both extremely talented guitarists but just on this one song I pick Gilbert. hehe :)

Yea, Judas Priest doesn't sound anything like BonJovi :D I think that alone already makes them extra special. hahaha yea, a thread on them would be nice! :)

But I still owe it to Motley Crue and you, for formally introducing me to the world of heavy metal. So that alone will make this band unforgettable for me! haha!

At least you're now a new Crue fan ^_^ Too bad their later CDs aren't available here; when Tower Records was still here, at least we get to see CDs that normally the record companies here will not touch. And great that you're liking heavy metal. Motley Crue is a good intro to it; not too hard and not too mainstream rock either. They're quite easy to appreciate, and which would lead one to explore heavy metal further.

Yup--made a Judas Priest thread na din... http://www.candymag.com/teentalk/index.php/topic,188713.0.html
