Fortune3. Yakusoku suru

“Kore wa iidesu.” [This is nice] Chihiros’s hair was disarranged by the sudden gust of the wind. She walked towards Tsubasa-kun who seemed to be in a deep thought. His usual calm face is now full of unwanted emotions. He just stood there, bare footed on the sand, staring at the far and open beach. His eyes are full of eagerness and this made Chihiro bothered. His silence is just too loud for her.

“Daijoubu?” [Are you okay?] But Tsubasa-kun didn’t reply he didn’t even look at her. She patted his shoulder, and only then did he turn to face her.

“What?” His question made Chihiro a little annoyed. But instead of yelling at him, she just smiled and uttered, “Nothing.” Her smile concealed her true feelings.

She walked pass him and bended down to get a small seashell. The sharp tip of the seashell wounded her right palm and made her bleed. She mumbled a few words before standing up again. She used her left hand to search the left and right pocket of her faded pants but unfortunately there’s no handkerchief in there. She signed.

By the time she faced Tsubasa, she was disappointed because he is still thinking, but instead of staring at the open sky and the open ocean he focused his attention on her, as if he’s yearning to tell her something. A mixture of amusement and great lost is shown on his face. Chihiro’s wound is still bleeding and Tsubasa immediately saw it. He ran towards her and gave her the same handkerchief he had given her last month when she cried all night and the night they made an unbreakable vow.

“Baka.” [Stupid] He gently treated her right palm. She can feel warmth on his hands. She feels like crying now, not because of her wounded palm but because of Tsubasa’s silence that really gotten into her nerves. She wanted to yell at him, to make him explain what happened. She thought that he doesn’t trust her enough to tell her what’s been bothering him.

“Nande? Nande?! Why are you like this?! You’re silence, it bugs the hell out of me! Yamete! If something’s bothering you, please tell me. I want to help you. Seeing you like this makes me want to cry…” And she did cry. He suddenly felt guilty and ashamed. He hugged her and brushed her hair.

“Gomen.” [Sorry] He wanted to tell her but at the same time, he doesn’t want her to know, for knowing will hurt her. Maybe he’ll be able to tell her some other time, but not now.

He gently removed his arms around her. He can still see some tears falling from her eyes and that hurt him. Seeing her crying is enough to break his heart again and again. The pain it brings is more painful than the pain he usually feels in his chest, it is more painful than the hole in his heart; it’s like not breathing at all.

“Nakanaide.” [Don’t cry] She immediately wiped her tears and tried to smile. She doesn't want him to get too worried.

"Yah, what if...what if I die Chihiro? What will happen to my mom?" She didn't expect this question, she tried to think harder, to think of an answer that will satisfy him. She was about to answer but Tsubasa suddenly continued, "What will happen to you?" He looked at her, crying. Sorrow can be seen in his eyes and Chihro can't take it. She suddenly feel pain in her heart. She can hear it breaking. Breaking because of the boy she though she'll never love, but here she is right now, crying. Trying to escape their sad and uncertain reality. She then realized and asked herself the same thing. "What will happen to me? Will my heart follow him then? Will we continue to love each other in heaven?"

"I promise, I'll marry you. Someday, somehow. Whatever it takes. Yakusoku suru." [I promise]

"Why are suddenly saying all of these Tsubaka!? Baka. Tsubaka! Of course you'll marry me. We will both be cured, right?" It was her turn to wipe his tears away. She held his hand, and he held it tight and didn't let go.

[Instead of saying Tsubasa, Chihiro changed it to Tsubaka, because baka means stupid. And Chihiro thinks that he's stupid that time ^___^V]

"Please don't forget about me Chi because I'll definitely won't forget about you. Promise me, okay?" Chihiro didn't understand what he said but she smiled nonetheless.

"Yakusoku suru." He smiled. He took the seashell that wounded Chihiro's right palm and he intentionally wounded his.

"Yah! Baka! Nande?! Why did you do that?! Let's go back!" His hand is now continuously bleeding. He ignored Chihiro's continuous nagging and obediently followed her until they reached the Hospital again.

They both went to Dr. Kenji's private room and tended their right palms. Chihiro is still annoyed with Tsubasa's weird behavior so she remained quiet until late that night but Tsubasa can't take her constant glares and silent treatment so he followed her her in her room. He had a hard time sneaking out because it is already late, and he's not allowed to go out of his room. Many nurses are down the hall but none of them saw him. Lucky, he thought.

When he reached her door. He knocked three times, a sign that it is urgent. Two knocks means, I want to see you. And a knock means, I'm bored. But Chihiro didn't respond so he knocked three times again.

He was determined to knock her door out but she finally opened it. Her face is telling Tsubasa that she won't accept anything from him not even his apology.

"Nande? Why are you ignoring me?!" She remained silent. She didn't look at him.

"Are you still mad because I wounded my palm?" She nodded. But deep inside of her mind, she's thinking that, it was more than that. She was confuse by his sudden behavior. It was weird.

"Gomen. I did that because I know that our wounds will leave a scar. And it would be our scar Chi. It will be our constant reminder about our favorite beach, our legendary knocks, our ninja moves at night when we try to sneak out, about the starry sky we love to look at so much, it is simply reminding us about, us. About our love. Our scar will last for a lifetime, and so is our love."

She cried again. This time, her cry is much more painful, much more harder and it sounds like she is at her limit. She is too desperate. She's begging for time to stop for them.

"Yah! Tsubasa-kun. You asked me what will happen to me if you die, of course I'll die too! Our memories is enough to kill me! Don't worry, I assure you that I'll never forget you, it will be impossible since you gave so much to remember!"

He hugged her just like the first night they've met. They both prayed to live longer, to get stronger and to love each other for a lifetime.

Fortune 4. Bunri (Part 1)


August 28, 19xx

"Congratulations Mrs. Inoue. The donor chose Tsubasa-kun. You can already call this a miracle considering that getting a heart donor could take years and sometimes it's almost impossible." Dr. Kenji Tatsuya said. His voice is not rude yet sharp. His eyes fathomless.

"Thank you Dr. Tatsuya, I came as soon as I could." Mrs. Inoue is in the verge of crying because of too much joy. She barely understood her own feelings, she's relieved yet still bothered by something. Her eyes are telling that she's scared of expecting, because it might end with great disappointment.

"The operation will be the day after tomorrow. I will do my very best." Mrs. Inoue just nodded and smiled then stood up and started for the door.

Dr. Tatsuya just sat there in his swivel chair motionless. It took a few seconds before he put a hand in his forehead. Slowly, tears came running down his cheeks. It was supposed to be Chihiro. She should have been chosen. She should have the heart. Selfishness rose from the doctor's heart.

"Otousan. It's time for lunch. Let's eat!" Chihiro said cheerfully. She slowly walked toward his father who is still crying.

"Gomenasai Chihiro-chan..Gomen..." [I'm very sorry] His father's voice is shaking, showing so much weakness. Chihiro gently wiped his father's tears away. Chihiro is still confuse with what's happening. His father is not the type to just suddenly cry and say he was sorry. Something big must have happen she thought but she couldn't bring herself to ask.

She waited for a couple of seconds and then gathered enough strength to ask, "What happened Chi? Why are you crying? Namida ga tomara." [Stop crying] Her voice shaking.

"I failed...I shouldn't be selfish but it should have been you." Her father even cried harder. This time he's hugging her daughter so tight, afraid to let her go. Chihiro tried so hard not to cry and she was succeeding but as her father continue to cry, the strength she's building to guard herself disappeared. She doesn't understand a word her father is telling her but she's crying anyway. Her father has been her strength and she haven't realized it until now that he's also her weakness.

"Nande Otousan? Nani?" [Why father? What is it?] She doesn't want to sound a baby but it couldn't be helped.

"It will take a time again Chi. We will wait for another heart to arrive. The old one is not available anymore." He doesn't want her daughter to lose hope, and he doesn't want to believe that it would be impossible to have another one now too. They will just have to wait.

"Why? Will Tsubasa-kun have it then?" Chihiro's voice wasn't shaking anymore, in fact she regained her normal cheerful self.

Her father nodded. She smiled.

"Then I don't mind. I'd gladly give up my own for him." For the first time, Dr. Tatsuya was dumbfounded. He doesn't know how to respond. His daughter who just turned nine yesterday is saying something she shouldn't be saying. Suddenly he felt, sheer pain, pity and anger. He suddenly had the urge to separate her daughter from Tsubasa-kun. Things aren't right he thought.

"Chihiro, you are going to Korea tomorrow." Chihiro's smiling face suddenly became unwilling. Her father doesn't make any sense anymore.

"But why? Tsubasa-kun's operation, tell me, when is it?" But her father remained silent almost distant, he's not even looking at her. He stood up and left the room. He made up his mind. It's time for them to start accepting that they can never be together. Not in this lifetime. He will never let anything hurt her daughter now. Not when she's this vulnerable.

Chihiro came running behind him. He ignored her questions and just continued to walk.

"Yah! Tell me! Tell me!" She's almost shouting and nurses as well as patients are starting to stare at them now. But she didn't care. She has the right to know. But her father never showed any sign of telling her so she just gave up. She'll ask Tsubasa-kun herself.

She went to Tsubasa-kun's room which was a floor above where she was. She knocked three times and quickly the door opened and a wide smile welcomed Chihiro in. Happiness is in his face.

"I have great news Chi!" She pretended she doesn't know anything and made up a curious face.

"What is it?" She's finding it difficult to conceal her excitement. She can't wait to congratulate him. Even if it was meant for her, she doesn't mind. Because Tsuba-kun is more important. He's the only thing important she thought. She gave him a wide smile as well.

"I'm going to be cured! We found a heart donor!" She flashed a wider smile. She tried to sound surprise and convincing and fortunately it worked.

"Congratulations! I'm so happy for you." Suddenly Tsubasa's smile faded and he seemed to have realized something awfully sad and painful.

"I..I change my mind..I don't want the heart anymore..."

"Baka! What are you talking about?!"

"What about you then Chi?! How can I go on living knowing that I'm saved and you're not?! What's the whole point of surviving and being cured when you're not with me?!" She gently touched Tsubasa-kun's cheek with her hand and answered, "Yah, I'm not leaving you. Not now, not ever. We will both be cured. You don;t have to worry about being alone because I'm not gonna leave you, understand?" He nodded and wiped his tears away. "The point is simple Tsubasa, if you survive, you can tell me the whole point of being alive, what it really means and how it really feels." She's crying now. It haven't occurred to her until now  that she's really scared. Uncertainties filled her heart again. And she hated herself for crying in front of him again, what will he think now? I'm so stupid she thought.

"I'll tell you. I promise. You should be the first one I see when I woke up, okay? It would be the day after tomorrow. It will be my birthday then." That's right, and she already have a present for him. A simple but sentimental thing. A thing that will forever tie them together.

August 30, 19xx

Chihiro was waiting outside the operating room. The operation started 4 hours ago. It's already 8:00 PM. She doesn't want to eat, she's been bothered since this morning. Nothing seemed to be right. That morning, her father did nothing but to persuade her to go to Korea that for her is just plain nonsense.

She's sitting uncomfortably beside Tsubasa-kun's mother who has been with her for the last four hours. It was awkward she thought. Tsubasa-kun's mother is nothing like him. Her face is stern and compose but she can feel that she's afraid nonetheless.

An hour had passed again, still none of them talked. She want to make a conversation, to ease their growing tension but she's afraid because Mrs. Inoue was not that approachable and seemed a little dangerous. But she's Chihiro Tatsuya for crying out loud, she laugh at the face of danger.

She was about to open her mouth but Mrs. Inoue interrupted her.

"Do you like my son Chihiro-san?" Chihiro shook her head and rephrased what Mrs. Inoue said. "I don't like him, I love him." and then she smiled. Tsubasa-kun's mother is really scary she thought, her voice is so cold.

Mrs. Inoue seemed to be composed but she was quite taken aback with what the little girl have said. She's beginning to feel what Dr. Tatsuya felt. Tsubasa-kun and Chihiro must part, what they feel now must end.

"To be honest with you, I've already decided my son's future. And unfortunately you are not in it." Chihiro's smile faded. She was about to question the lady but Mrs. Inoue already got up from her seat and walked away. Even her back seemed cold, Chihiro uttered silently, almost inaudible.

Why not? Naze wareware wa ichibu nakereba narimasen? [Why must we part?] Watashi-tachi wa otagai daisuki. [We both love each other] So why?

She remained silent. It's not the time to be dealing with this kind of feelings. She must pray for Tsubasa-kun. She ran downstairs, towards the Hospital's Mini Chapel and prayed.

"God, why must we part when obviously, we can't live without each other? These past few days, Otousan became weird, it sort of feels like that he doesn't want Tsubasa-kun near me. And now, Tsubasa-kun's mom also told me that she's against me being in her son's life. What should we do? What must I do? Please help us God. Watashi wa kare o eien ni aishitai." [I want to love him forever]

Her tears slowly came out from her eyes. Her emotions, she can't handle them. And all of a sudden, she can't breathe. She's catching for her breath. Air suddenly felt like limited for her. She can't bring herself to stand up so she stayed kneeling for a long moment.

"I can't breathe...Tsubasa-kun..my gift..it's your birthday..Aishteru.." Slowly, the light from the candles surrounding the small chapel faded. Chihiro passed out, seeing only Tsubasa-kun's smiling face in her mind.

August 30, 19xx 11:58 PM

"Chihiro-chan...Chihiro-chan.." Slowly, Tsubasa-kun opened his eyes. He is in his room. Odd he thought. It was too quiet. He expected everything to be loud. Where is she? He's been yearning to see her. To tell her how brave he is for surviving the operation.

She gently turned his head sideways to check if Chihiro is just teasing her and playing hide and seek. But she's nowhere to be found.

"Watashi wa kanojo o mitai..." [I want to see her] He's losing consciousness and he hated it. And he's mad at her for not keeping her promise. She was supposed to be the one he sees first. Gradually, he lost consciousness again.

"O tanjō-bi omedetōgozaimasu!" [Happy Birthday!]

Tsubasa just remained quiet and remained looking outside. He's upset.

"It's not even my birthday anymore! How could she...How could she just leave me? She promised..." Tears are about to fall from his eyes. He's not happy at all, he barely woke up last night. He's not even awake to celebrate his own birthday. And where is she?

"I'm sorry Tsubasa. Dr. Tatsuya said it was urgent. That they have to fly to Seoul immediately. They left yesterday." His mother lied. They didn't left Japan at all. They left Hokkaido and went to Tokyo. Dr. Tatsuya and Mrs. Inoue both agreed that they should be separated. They're not meant for each other. It's better this way. But somehow his son's cries bothered her. Tsubasa kept on calling Chihiro-san.

"Kanojo wa, watashi-tachi wa itsumo issho ni naru koto o watashi ni yakusoku shita! Chihiro! Watashi wa jūbunde wa nai nodesu ka?" [She promised me that we will always be together.] [Am I not good enough?]

Tsubasa continued to cry and yearn for the one he loves the most. He promised to find her, maybe not now, but they would definitely see each other again.
