Official Grammar Lesson Thread
« on: April 04, 2009, 02:15:09 pm »
Hi TeenTalkers. I ain't an expert in this field. I also sometimes commit wrong grammering:D And I thought of making this thread to help each other out since I noticed some posts that are written in the wrong way.

At para wala nang nasasabihan ng ganito: "Kala mo kung sino, wrong grammar naman!" HAHA!

Anyone can help. Questions are also welcome.

LESSON 1
I did not killed anybody! - wrong!
I did not kill anybody! - right!

When you use DO, DOES or DID, make sure that the verb right next to it that you are using is in PRESENT TENSE. Don't use past tense!

LESSON 2
I have eat my lunch. - wrong!
I have eaten my lunch. - right!

HAS, HAVE and HAD is used with a verb in PAST PARTICIPLE.

LESSON 3 (from: http://esl.about.com/library/grammar/blgr_prep3.htm)

Preposition Use - in / at / on - prepositions of time and date

IN

Use 'in' months and years and periods of time:

    * in January
    * in 1978
    * in the twenties

Use 'in' a period of time in the future:

    * in a few weeks
    * in a couple of days

AT

Use 'at' with precise time:

    * at six o'clock
    * at 10.30
    * at two p.m.

ON

Use 'on' with days of the week:

    * on Monday
    * on Fridays

Use 'on' with specific calendar days:

    * on Christmas day
    * on October 22nd

I have a question that's been bugging me for quite some time now. Haha.

It has never actually rained cats and dogs, but it had rained fish.

Can you tell me what's wrong in this sentence? Thanks!

Helpful thread 'to ;) May times na sabaw din ako sa english. Actually, frustrated writer ako. Gusto ko man mag sulat in english, nagiging taglish din sa huli. Haha.

Hmm.. I aint sure pero parang wala namang mali? baka sa thought? Kase may mga sinasabi na dapat it rained fish daw ang gagamitin hindi cats and dogs. Something like that. Not sure.

Pero sa grammar.. you think it's correct? Okay. Thanks! ;D

I was fairly good at grammar and language before... but i noticed that since i started my college, I also started to lose my grammatical skills. My course is all about numbers and analysis (believe me, I DID NOT WANT THAT!!!) and constantly staring at numbers makes me lose some of my grammatical "skills" (if skill is the right term anyways).

so do you think it's true? that those who are good in math are bad in english and vice versa?
there's no fun when there's no challenge

I believe and I follow the SUPERPOSITION principle

I believe it's on parallelism. There should be balance in a sentence. In that example, you have 'has' and 'had'.  Dapat pareho sila para balanse.

To make the sentence parallel, it should be It has never actually rained cats and dogs, but it has rained fish. or It had never actually rained cats and dogs, but it had rained fish.

Sorry late reply but I hope that helped =D

I thought of that too, but I'm still confused. So, thanks for that! At least I know I'm not the only one who's thinking that the problem's on the "has and had". :]]

I don't think being better in Math makes you less good in grammar. I know a HS Math teacher who also writes short stories and novels. Maybe it depends on the amount of time you alot in practicing your Math skills and grammar skills.
