Hey everyone
Can you suggest good historical books?
Like, anything related to history. American History, WW2, WW1, Nazis.. and the like.

I'm really interested in the history of the world.
Thanks. =)

Maganda rin yung mga works ni Philippa Gregory. (The Other Boleyn Girl)

You might also want to try Phil. works like The Revolt of the Masses by Agoncillo.

We have that book! But, unfortunately, it's a copy translated in Spanish. Gah.. But I'd buy that soon!

The Other Boleyn Girl? What is it about?I should've borrowed my classmate's book when she brought it in school.

Thanks, I'll check out the PI history part in NBS. :)

The Other Boleyn Girl is about the most controversial Queen of England, Anne Boleyn, and her sister, Mary.

It's a twisted tale of rivalry and deception, so it's a must-read. You learn about history and satiate your need for good reads at the same time :D

Yup it was edited to be a bit more dramatic but you still get a feel of what it's like to live in that period in time :)

1939 The Last Season - by Anne De Courcy

i think that you will like this book. hindi sya "boyish" if u know waht i mean..nevertheles, the book still falls under the WW2 Category.

The Season of 1939 brought all those 'in Society' to London. The young debutante daughters of the upper classes were presented to the King and Queen to mark their acceptance into the new adult world of their parents. They sparkled their way through a succession of balls and parties and sporting events. The Season brought together influential people not only from Society but also from Government at the various events of the social calendar. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain chaperoned his debutante niece to weekend house parties; Lord Halifax, the Foreign Secretary, lunched with the Headmaster of Eton; Cabinet Ministers encountered foreign Ambassadors at balls in the houses of the great hostesses. As the hot summer drew on, the newspapers filled with ever more ominous reports of the relentless progress towards war. There was nothing to do but wait - and dance. The last seaon of peace was nearly over.

^

ahaha!

you like to read alot about the individual lives of Jewish people during the war, eh? :)

kaya pala hilig mo si Anne Frank  :)

ako naman im more interested on learning more about how large numbers of people behaved and acted during the war.. that is why you could notice in my titles na karamihan sa kanila talaga is focused on the collective.

although reading about the individual accounts of survivors is also worthwhile. ah, u just reminded me of this book i read 2 years ago.

the title is "By Sword and Fire: Feb. 3 - March 3 1945" by Alfonso Aluit.

there you'll see talga the individual accounts of the survivors of the war. nakakatakot yung mga pinag gagawa ng mga hapon sa mga Pinoy.

^yeah.haha dati pa hinahanap ko mga books na love story pero setting eh wartime.
some of 'em were too cheesy though, they focused sa love story and not the historical part much.

mmm collective ka pala.i can relate better if indivual lives. :)

oh yeah, interesting din yung sa Philippines setting nung wartime.
im trying to borrow my classmate's "When Elephants Dance".
jap era din ata yun.

yeah, sometimes the things we read about the war... they're too grotesque. yung tipong 'di ka makapaniwala na totoo. pero totoo pala. tsk tsk

Thanks, pach. The plot made me curious about the book, especially the last 3 sentences.

lovestories na wartime? at least the most familiar to us are:

Memoirs of a Geisha

Pearl Harbour

Corelli's Mandolin

------------------------
there are also interesting war novels which were written during the war, most especially by the Russians but these are very hard to come by.

------------------------

another good ww2 sub genre is war correspondence. eto yung mga true-to-life wartime accounts by field journalists or by people who had interviewed veterans and survivors of the war.

the book by Studs Terkel is good if you'd like to read about America's experience.

Vassily Grossman's "A Writer at War" would be recommended if you'd like to read about the war in the eastern front.

and i'll check out When Elephants Dance, thank you  :)

There's bunch of good ones out there but i would suggest February 1965: The Final Speeches. It's a collection of Speeches and Writings of Malcolm X, it's a real eye opener.

Also, if you're interested in Holocaust Literature, there's Night by Elie Wisel. It's a very compelling auto biography of a Holocaust survivor.
