Chapter Fifty Three
Part One

Elle’s POV

“Si Lance daw, nasa bahay na?” Rafa asked as I hung up.

“Wala pa daw sabi ni Nanay She.”

“Den, si Ria, nagreply?”

“Hindi eh.”

“T*ngina,” Aidan muttered under his breath. “Asan na ba yun?”

I took one look at the grandfather clock at the corner of the room— it was already past 3 am. Gellie paced around the room, looking agitated. Rafa was in the porch, once in a while standing up to look at every vehicle that passed by. Aidan and I sat side by side at the sofa, watching Ate Danna while she stood at the top of the stairs, dialling endlessly.

“Hey!”

Tumayo si Rafa, and we saw a couple of headlights blare through the night. The vehicle stopped, and the four of us rushed out onto the porch. We all held our breath as the gate opened.

A very disoriented-looking Ria had entered the room, seemingly unaware of her surroundings. Her eyes were swollen, as though she had been crying for the past few hours.

“Ria!” Gellie exclaimed, running towards her. “What happened to you?”

“What are you talking about?” Ria replied in a deadpan croak.

“Ba’t di ka sumasagot sa phone?”

“Naiwan ko sa kotse.”

“Saan ka ba nagpunta?” Aidan demanded. “Diba may usapan kayo ni Lance? Nagmukha kaming tanga kakahintay dun! Akala namin kung ano nang  nangyari sayo!”

She merely looked at him, looking like she had no intention of replying whatsoever.

“Ano ba nangyari?”

“Nagtext ako diba?” she said, walking past us that we had to follow her into the living room. “Di ba niya sinabi?”

“He didn’t, but we know,” Aidan replied, although the look on his face frightened me. “Nakalimutan niya nang kunin yung cellphone niya because he was in such a rush to find you… quite understandable given that you didn’t show up after three hours. What’s up with that, anyway?”

“Bukas na lang tayo mag-usap. Pagod ako.”

Hinila siya ni Aidan.

“Ikaw lang ba pagod? Ano bang akala mo sa amin? Ano bang akala mo kay Lance? Hanggang ngayon nasa labas pa siya, naghahanap sayo!”

Ria gave a mirthless laugh.

“Sinabi ko bang sumama kayo sa kagaguhan niya? Saka sinabi ko bang maghanap siya? Bakit, bata ba ako para hanapin? Hindi naman diba? Di ko naman na siguro kasalanan yun.”

She threw her handbag on the couch.

“Sabihin mo nga sa amin,” asked Rafa. “Saan ka ba galing?”

“Kelan pa kita naging tatay?”

“Sumagot ka nga ng maayos!”

“Ano ba gusto nyong marinig?” Ria snapped. “Pwede ba. Kung ayaw nyo matulog, aba magpatulog kayo.”

“Si Gelo na naman ba to?”

“Eh ano naman?” Ria asked, smirking again. “We were just catching up for lost time, you know what I mean?”

“Ano ba pinagsasasabi mo!?”

“Wala. Narealize ko lang kung anong tama.”

“Teka, ano nangyari sa –? ”

“What are you babbling about, Elle?”

She rolled her eyes.

“Look, you all know what was in the text diba? How come you’re still asking me these questions?” she said, turning angrily towards us. “Di nyo ba naintindihan yun? Are you actually as stupid as you look?”

“Aba-

“Shush,” Aidan told me, raising a hand. “What’re you up to, Ria? Do you actually realize—

“Yeah, I know what I’m doing so put your large nose out of it.”

“So you’re making a decision, huh?” Aidan asked. “How does deciding between him and us sound like?”

“Sounds easy,” Ria replied, smiling again. “Come on, Aidan. Did you really have to ask?”

“Us or him?”

 
“Him, of course,” Ria said, without batting an eyelash.












































For a moment, everyone was quiet.
I couldn’t believe my ears.

“What?”

“You never should’ve made me choose,” she spat.

I glared at her, then turned to Aidan.

“We all heard her,” I said, pulling his hand. “Let’s not waste our time, shall we? We’ve wasted more than enough.”

Aidan silently followed my lead, and then Rafa followed suit. Gellie stayed glued on where she was.

“O, ano pang hinihintay mo?” Ria asked. “Alis!”


I saw Gellie cross the distance between them in three strides, and then did the unthinkable—







*SLAP!*









































Ria cowered on the spot, clutching her face, while Gellie was beside herself with fury.

“Who do you think you are?”

A tear quickly fell down Ria’s face. I would’ve pitied her if she wasn’t such a b1tch.

“Well, thanks pa rin,” Gellie went on. “At least we’re all done with your drama and sh1t. We never really needed the excess baggage anyway.”

She regally turned on her heel and walked past us. We followed her into the patio, where Rafa caught up, putting his arm around her shoulder.

“Great slap.”

“Thanks.”

We all laughed uneasily, and then we saw another set of headlights.
