okay so i finsihed the story first before commenting. i started reading this for like, two days ago tapos ayun na-hooked na ko. ang galing! ang ganda. nung una nalito pa ko kasi hi ndi pa naestablished yung characters pero hindi ko maiwan kasi ayos ang dating eh so binasa ko talaga. ayun!! hanep, na-adik na ko! haha.

favorite part ko yung sinaktan ni gelo si ria. hindi sa masaya ako at nangyari yun pero kasi napaka-dramatic. ayun iyak ako ng iyak kasi ang sakit di ba... parang wala na yung taong minahal niya dati... tapos si lance my gosh!!! ang sakit. kasi naman ang tagal na niyang mahal si ria....



huhuhuhu... parang hindi ako makapili. pero parang kay lance ako napupunta eh. akin na lang po siya?

natapos ko ung 1st and ngaun eto naman tpos ko na din..
ahm.. kelan po kaw magupdate ulit?.hehe

Ria’s POV

“Kurdapya! Sorry. I can’t pick you from school today. Yung neurotic ko kasing doctor, bigla na lang nagschedule ng check up. Alam mo naman si Stella, isa pa rin. I’m really sorry. Ang dami ko nang kasalanan. I’ll make it up to you. Kailangan ko rin kasing gumawa ng paper ko sa geog. I’ll see you for dinner tomorrow night. Loveyou.”

*beep*
End of voicemail.

“Let me guess,” Gellie said, rolling her eyes. She cleared her throat and lowered her voice to make it sound like a guy’s. “I’m sorry, Ria. Can’t pick you up today.Will make it up to you. Love you!”

“I think you guys are being too hard on him,” I said with a reassuring smile. Gellie wasn’t a huge fan of Gelo either. “May appointment siya with his doctor.”

“One of his many excuses. How many times has he bailed out at the last minute?”

“I’ve talked to him about it. Ok na yun.”

“We saw him drinking again the other day. Has he told you that?”

I looked at her, trying to mask my shock.
That, I’m not aware of.

“Really? When? He might have mentioned… baka di lang ako nakikinig nun.”

“Two days ago?”

“Oh yeah. Yeah, he told me about it, all right.”

I had to avoid her gaze as I took a sip off my latte.

“Buti na lang, you’re free today. Gimmick time ulit.”

She surveyed me through narrowed eyes.

“I’m sensing you want to change the topic, yes?”

“Gellie—

“Look, Ria,” she said, putting her cup on the table with more force than she had intended. “It’s bad enough that you’re lying to your friends… but now that you’re fooling yourself, I’m going to have to put my foot down.”

I cringed as I watched her expression. Among my friends, she was the only one who could scare me like this.

“How could you let him do this to you?”

“I signed up for this, okay?” I replied. “I wanted this. Kailangan ko tong panindigan.”

“At the expense of what? You’re better than this. Come on—”

“G,” I said coolly, “I invited you out here because I needed someone other than Elle, Maffy or Denise… someone who would not rub it in my face that I’m doing the wrong thing.”

I sighed.

“It’s hard enough without all of you telling me how stupid I am.”

“Kung pati yung concern namin, minamasama mo,” she said, getting her purse off the other chair, “I guess we’re better off na walang pakialamanan.”

“Gellie, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to—

“Make it sound so harsh? Oh, believe me, Ria… you did,” Gellie scoffed. “Kung ayaw mo sa amin, well, wala kaming magagawa. If your definition of ‘friends’ are people who would willingly watch you tread on the path of self-destruction then we’re sorry, hindi kami yun.”

She stood up and pushed her chair back.

“Why don’t you go and call Karissa? She’d be ecstatic to do just that.”

“Gellie, wait—

“Thanks a lot for the coffee.”


Gellie’s POV

“It’s okay, Gellie.”

Rafa put his arm around my shoulder as we waited for the cheesecake to bake. I had gone straight home after what happened, and when I called him to come over he had fortunately obliged.

“I feel horrible.”

“Well that wasn’t exactly pleasant.”

“I shouldn’t have said those.”

“She needed a bad scolding. You did the right thing.”

“But still…”

“Ssshhh.”

He pulled me even closer.

“Screw my sharp tongue,” I said. “It’s a fatal flaw.”

“I beg to disagree.”

“Of course you’d say that,” I scoffed.

“Haha, come on, Gellie.”

“I wonder how she could put up with that.”

“I don’t.”

“What?”

“I know her well enough. She’s a little crazy.”

Looking up at him, I saw a different kind of smile on his face.

“Yeah?”

“It took me a long time to actually get it.”

“How long have you known her?”

“Since June?”

“So… you’re close?”

“I’d say we are.”

I raised a brow.
He still had this silly grin, and it was getting more and more infuriating.

“You and the others feel this weird need to be protective of her,” I said. “Aidan, Liam, Jonathan… Lance… You. Why not Elle or Denise?”

“They are completely able to take care of themselves. Ria, on the other hand, tries very hard to look like she could do as well, but to be completely honest, she’s the one who’s most capable of messing up.”

“Ooooh. Okay.”

Pissed, I shook off his arm and went to check the cheesecake.

“It gets so bad that we feel like it’s a responsibility or something.”

“Responsibility?” I repeated. “So why didn’t you ask her out, then?”

“You know the answer, Gellie. ”

“I don’t.”

“Are you okay?” he asked suddenly. “Your whole face is red.”

Oh, darn.
I’m a tad too obvious. Another fatal flaw.

“Honestly?” I asked, turning off the oven. “No. I’m not.”

“Why?”

“I think you need some serious rethinking.”

“I… don’t get it. At all.”

“You said it yourself,” I snapped. “She feels like a responsibility. Why don’t you go and bake cheesecakes with her instead?”

“Gellie,” he said, laughing. “Are you… jealous?”

“No!” I exclaimed, my face burning. “I just think you care about her a little too much!”

“What?!” he retorted, his smile gone. “You were the one who brought her up in the first place!”

“Fine, so it’s my fault now?”

“I can’t believe we’re fighting over this.”

“Me neither. I can’t even believe I’m dating someone who had the nerve to ask me out, given that he hasn’t even sorted out his feelings for somebody else.”

“Angeli.”

“Don’t call me that!”

“Look. I—

“No, listen. I have a lot of work to do… it’s better if you just…”

I laid the cheesecake on the kitchen counter and took off my apron.
Ehrrrr. Nakakainis.

“Take this home for Lola and Ate Niki.”

“Gellie, please.”

“I’ll be in graveyard shift this week. I won’t make it on Adhoc next Saturday,” I told him. “You really should go and find another date.”

Without another word, I left the kitchen.


Gelo’s POV

“Wait, what?”

It’s the third time she has asked me that tonight.
We’ve been sitting across each other in a table for two in Aveneto for the past hour. She’s not being herself. Even her plateful of marinara lay untouched.

“Ok ka lang ba?”

She gave a sigh.

“Yeah.”

“You can tell me, Ria.”

Has she found out?

“I don’t think I’m supposed to do the telling.”

Sh1t.
I’m screwed.
But how did she find out? I’ve done every precaution possible…

“What happened? Are you—

“Gellie and I had a fight.”

“Bakit?”

“The night you blew me off for your Art Studies report, she found you somewhere, drinking. Apparently, you could stay in two places at one time.”

How on earth?!
Sa lahat ng taong pwedeng nakakita sakin…

She put down her fork calmly, but the look on her face was alarming enough.

“Of course, I had to disagree. How could you have done it?”

“Ria—

“I covered up for you. I told her I knew, even if I didn’t. I always tell them that I’m aware of what you’re up to, even if I’m not.”

“Biglaan yun. Hindi ko sinasadya. I thought you were asleep already, so inisip ko di na lang kita itetext.”

“But you never mentioned anything.”

“Kailangan ba lahat ng galaw ko alam mo?”

She gave me a defiant stare.

“I tell you everything. Maybe it’s fair enough that I ask you to do the same.”

“We have lives outside this relationship,” I said firmly. “I feel no need to tell you every single detail, and that goes both ways.”

Taking a huge swig off my orange juice, I shook off the guilt I was feeling.
It was much easier now, having done it so many times.

“I don’t think you understand.”

“Excuse me?”

“I’m guessing you’re upset because you think I’m meddling too much?”

She was calm, but the manner in which she spoke gave it all.

“It’s not that. Hindi ko gustong masakal ka sa relationship na to. Ang akin lang…”

Twirling her pasta with her fork, she shot me a furtive look.

“Sana, give some effort naman to prove that you deserve this last chance.”

“Hindi madali—

“Hindi rin madali sakin to. I mean, dude,” she said with a sarcastic smile. “Lying to my friends and family isn’t my forte. And I’m not planning to be good at it.”

“What are you getting at?”

“Well, what I’m trying to say is that I’m not going to cover up for you all the time. It’s hard enough that I’m swallowing every lie you’re telling me, but to expect me to play along with it and pretend it’s okay in front of everyone, that’s stretching it already.”

“I’m not—

“If you can’t do something or anything to change that, isa lang ang ibig sabihin nun… wala na tayong pupuntahan.”

The glass of juice trembled in my hands.

“No, please. I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry?”

“Sorry kung ganito ako. Ria, you have no idea how much I treasure this relationship.”

“I want to believe you. I really do.”

I grabbed her hand from across the table.

“If that’s what you want, okay. I’ll tell you everything from now on.”

Enclosing her fingers tightly in mine, I looked her in the eye and felt a fresh rush of guilt.

“I’ll do anything you ask me to. Wag mo lang akong iwan. I can’t afford to lose you again.”

“Sige,” she said, then she slowly got her hand off my grasp.

“Ad Hoc this Saturday,” I said with a smile. “Are you going with me?”

“If you promise not to bail out at the last minute.”

“Of course not.”

“And don’t get drunk.”

“Yeah. I promise to be the best date ever.”

“Aasahan ko yan.”

“I love you.”

It took a while before she spoke.

“Love you too.”

She handed me her purse.

“Mag-CR lang ako, ha?”

“Okay.”

She stood up, and at that precise moment, my phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Anak? Where are you?”

“Makati. Why?”

“Are you going to finish soon?”

“Bakit nga?”

“Andito si Dr. Garcia. He wants to talk to you.”

“We’ll be home in thirty.”

I ended the call, fuming. My mom’s such a pain in the neck.
Looking up, I saw Ria emerge from the washroom. She smiled as she saw me.

My phone rang again.

“Stella, I told you—

“Stella? Three girls at once, eh?”



“Who’s this?”

“Your girl looks nice. It’s a pity you’re cheating on her with Amanda.”

“What?”

“She’s in blue, isn’t she?”

Sh1t.
Ria is wearing blue.

I looked around wildly, hoping to see someone holding a cellphone, but there wasn’t.

“What do you want?”

“Stay away from Amanda.”

“There is nothing going on between me and Amanda,” I hissed. The other line gave a deep, menacing laugh.

“Right.”

I heard a few screams.

What the—?!



“LOOK OUT!”

Ria looked up and saw the chandelier, which was dangerously swaying off the ceiling…

She jumped off just in time as it fell, breaking into a thousand pieces.
A split second more and she would have been—

“I have a lot more up my sleeve,” said the voice. “Screw Amanda some more and it’ll be more than chandeliers. Org Party next Saturday, huh? I wonder how a falling ceiling would look like…”

“WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!”

“That’s not important. Just do what I say and you get to stay alive. Understand?”

“YOU—

The line went dead.

I immediately ran towards Ria, who was brushing shards of glass off her dress.

“Jeez…”

“Are you all right?”

“Yes, yes… don’t worry.”

“Sh1t, your face is bleeding. Come on,” I said, grabbing her by the hand. “Let’s get out of here.”


“Hindi ka rin talaga bad luck magnet, no?” Ate Danna shot at me as she cleaned up Ria’s face. “Even in one of the safest districts of Makati, you still manage to bring misfortune to my sister.”

“Don’t be ridiculous, Ate. He didn’t ask the chandelier to fall on me.”

“I’m sorry, Ate. I won’t let it happen again.”

“Narinig ko na yan.”

She stood up and threw away the towel she was using.

“Tomorrow we’ll get you checked, just to be sure.”

“Ate, please don’t tell Dad.”

“Of course I won’t,” she said angrily. “I don’t want him to skin you alive just because you went on dating this pathetic excuse for a—”

“Stop, Ate.”

“I always told you this was a bad idea,” she went on. “Now you have to hide stuff from Dad and ask us to cover up for you…”

“ATE!”

“Fine, I’ll shut up.”

Ria stared at the floor as Ate Danna walked towards the door.

“Sige. Marami pa kong gagawin.”

Binagsak nya yung pinto.

“I didn’t know it was this bad,” I said, burying my face in my hands. “Your friends hate me, and your family practically wants to wipe me out of your life.”

“They’ll come around,” she told me, but the tone of her voice suggested otherwise. “You just have to prove to them that you’re not who they think you are.”

“But how?” I asked her. With that psycho tailing us on top of everything else, it was hard to think straight.

“No idea,” she said, taking her shoes off. “Shouldn’t you be home by now?”

“Yeah, but—

“I’m tired already. Maybe we should call it a day.”

“Of course. I understand.”

I stood up and she followed suit.

“See you at school.”

“Good night, Ri.”

I went to give her a good night kiss, but when she saw me at it, she mildly pushed me away, as though on reflex.

“Ano ba?”

Shocked, I stared at her, at a loss for words. She looked guilty.

“Wh—

“Sorry. I’m just really stressed,” she told me. “Please. Not now, okay?”

“Aright.”

“Galit ka?”

“Hindi.”

“Text me when you get home.”

“Sure.”

“Good night, Gelo.”

I managed a wave and a weak smile as I closed the door, my mind filled with endless questions.
