Chapter Thirty Three

Gelo’s POV

I looked around the place, hoping the scenery was fooling me. It was empty except for a couple of empty fruit baskets.

The door creaked open— an agitated nurse came in. She looked at me apprehensively.

“Your sister was brought to the ICU. She had a bad seizure about thirty minutes after you left. I suggest you—

I did not need her to finish that.

In mere seconds I found myself getting off the elevator. Looking around, I saw the usual chaos surrounding the emergency room, and I couldn’t find what I was looking for.

SH1T.
I messed up.
AGAIN.

“Excuse me, where’s the ICU?”
“Turn left over there and you’ll find it.”

I ran again, almost toppling a stretcher and a doctor in my haste to reach it in time.
It was then that I saw—

INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Bumping into a couple more of doctors along the way, I crossed the corridor in three strides in my haste to reach the room.

I’m coming, Rish.

The double doors burst open as I came in, and miraculously, I saw them.
My sister was, thankfully, alive and well. She gave me a weak smile as soon as she saw me.

“Where on earth have you been?! ”
“Chill, Dad. I told him to get me some chocolates. Didn’t I, Kuya?”

Why was she covering up for me?

“I was badly craving for Snickers. I told him to get me some.”

“I’m so sorry. Muntik na kong mawala nung pabalik rito…”

“Your sister had a seizure. The nurse said—

“I’m okay, guys, come on. Don’t mind what the nurse said.”

“She said you would have lapsed into coma if—

“But I’m not in a coma.”


She laughed.

“Ang OA niyo naman. Hindi pa ko mamamatay. No worries,  guys. Masama akong damo.”

“Rish!”

“Haha! Just kidding Ma. Would you guys mind? I want to talk to Kuya privately.”

Our parents nodded, then left. I immediately went and hugged her.

“Rish, I’m so sorry. Sorry talaga. Di na mauulit yun. Magpapakabait na ko. Hindi na babalik si Sheen.”

“Sorry din Kuya… Nadala kasi ako sa mga sinabi niya.”

“Forget about it, okay?” I told her, then I let go and took the chair beside her bed. “I don’t care about anything else. Pwede pa rin akong mag-aral sa UP kahit gurang na ko. Or kahit saan. Wag mo na isipin yun. Kayang kaya kong ayusin yun, basta magpagaling ka na, ha?”

She smiled again.

“Geez, I’m lucky I have you as a brother,” she said.

The doors flew open again.

“Angelo! Rish!”

Dad, nakakahiya ka. T_T

“A package just came in from Vegas!”


VEGAS?

He was carrying a medium sized box and a small note.

“It’s your mother. I think she just came to her senses,” he said, handing me the note.

Ricks and Gelo,

I’m sorry for everything.
The box contains all the stuff I think you’ll need: passports, phones and all the money (You can check; I didn’t touch a cent).

I’m coming to New York in a short while. Hope it’s not too late yet.

“WOW!”
“Great. I’ll talk to Gerard so we can start her treatment right away.”

Without another word, our Dad left us.
Ecstatically, I turned to Rish.

“YES!”

She didn’t look too happy. Instead, she was staring into empty space.

“Have I told you, Kuya? I kept dreaming of this angel these past few days.”



“Rish—

“Yeah, it’s true. And when I dream of her, everytime I wake up, I feel better.”

“Don’t sh1t me, okay? Natatakot na ko.”

“Bakit ka matatakot? Ang bait nga nung angel eh. Sabi niya—

“No, stop.”

I took her hand and gripped it tightly.

“You tell the angel to get away. We’re going home soon.”

“How can you say that?”

“You’re going to get well. I think the operation is in the bag, and in weeks you’ll be recovering fully. We’re gonna be okay. I’ll bring you everywhere— we’ll be shopping for pasalubong… Disneyland, Niagara—

“No.”

“Rish… what?”


She looked away and drew a long, deep breath.

“Kuya, the medications they’re giving me… they’re not working. Dati they relieve the pain… but now…”

“Don’t say that. Syempre… basta. May pera na tayo ngayon. Magagamot ka na, okay?”

“You don’t understand. Pag sinusumpong ako… you don’t know what it’s like. It’s torture. It’s HELL. Ayoko na…”


I slowly let go of her hand.

“You… you wait here and rest. Pagod ka lang. Babalik ako rito… Tatawagan ko lang sina Ria.”

I left her, my hands still shaking.
She just needs rest, that’s all.

Everything will be okay.


Ian’s POV

TSS. Bo-ring.
Emba was not the usual paradise I knew.

Where are all the good-looking party girls? It’s like I know everyone here already.

“Ian, are you listening? You keep looking around.”

“Oh, yeah. I’m just bored.”

“Bored? EXCUSE ME?” she said, standing up. “Are you saying I’m boring?”

“Hindi ako nagsabi niyan.”

“SCREW YOU!”

“I don’t need to screw myself. I can screw anyone I want,” I said with a smirk.

“Oh yeah?”

“Akala ko ba aalis ka? Umalis ka na. Humanap ka ng magtitiyaga sayo.”

“HMPH!”

All them wh0res. They all want me for my money.
Gold-digging, sex-crazed, modernized and metropolitan wannabe socialites. They’re everywhere.

“Hey, you’re here.”


Oh God no. You can’t be serious.

“You’re quite a Ladies’ Man, aren’t you?” she asked. “That gaggle of girls surrounding you since 10pm…”

“No, no, no. They’re just my friends, really.”

“Whatever.”

“Can I get you a drink?”

“Vodka, please.”


Karissa took a seat beside me, looking smashed. Her eyes were swollen.

“You look drunk.”

“Do I?”

“A bit.”

“Haha. Well, well. The last time I saw you was prom night. You’ve changed.”

“So have you.”

“I think you look good.”

“Thanks, you’re not looking so bad yourself.”

“Really?”


She laughed.

“Vodka.”

I handed her the glass.

“Why are you here?”

“Wala lang. I’m legal so I’m perfectly entitled to go.”

“You should be home.”

“No.”

She tipped the entire contents of the glass in her mouth and swallowed it. I pulled her by the hand and she had no choice but to follow, swaying left and right all the way.
I reached my car and put her in the passenger seat.

“You seem to care so much.”

“I do.”

“Haha,” she mumbled. “Why, do you find me pretty?”

“Karissa—

“Do I look good? Am I likeable enough, huh?”

“Of course you are. Now stay put, all right?”


I closed the door and climbed in the driver’s seat.
As I was about to start the engine, she pulled my sleeve.

“Where are you going to take me?”

“To your house.”

“I thought you hated my family?”

“Yeah,” I replied. “But I don’t hate YOU.”

“Why is that so?”

I didn’t answer.

“I’m starting to think you like me.”

“Easy for you to figure out.”

“Tell me I’m pretty.”

“You’re beautiful.”


She looked amused.

“Then why am I not good enough for you?”

“I never said you weren’t good enough for me.”

“I’ve loved you forever. Haven’t you noticed?”

I looked at her.

“Ever since we’ve been kids. You’re so dense.”

“What?”

“Yeah.”

“But—

“No but’s. Do you like me or not?”

I must be dreaming.
This is too good to be true.

“Yes. I do.”
“Then prove it.”

She pulled me towards her and kissed me.
It was surreal. I never thought she was this intense. She was an animal in the wild.

“My God,” she hissed. “You’re better than I thought, Lance.”


I stopped.

“What?”
“Why are you stopping?” she asked. “You’re always like that. Lagi mo kong iniiwan...”

Her grip on me loosened.

“I’m tired of it, Lance. Lagi ka na lang ganyan. Ikaw ba, hindi napapagod? Andito naman ako ah. Hindi mo ko pinapansin…”

Next thing I knew, she was crying.

“I wonder why you enjoy hurting me so much. Hindi ka na ba naaawa sakin, ha? Kung sabagay. Ikaw nga, hindi napapagod kakahabol kay bwisit na Ria… Bwisit kayong dalawa.”

“Sshhh. I’ll take care of it.”

“You’ll never end up with each other,” she said, her eyes glinting with unsuppressed malice. “Not if I can help it.”

“Of course not.”

“Goodnight, Lance.”

She had passed out.

Strike 2, Karate Barbie.

You have a lot to pay for.

“Hello, Sir, what do you need?”

“Leigh. Remember the file I threw away the other day?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Get it back to the folder. Label it in red.”

“What should I put on the label, Sir?”

“Target Number Two.”
