Chapter Two

Ria’s POV

I saw the speedometer hit 140 kilometers per hour, but I still felt it was too slow.


“Malapit na ba, manong?” Liam asked for the nth time.

“Konti na lang hijo,” the driver said patiently. Buti na lang, mahaba yung pasensya nung matanda, kundi kanina niya pang sinipa palabas yung katabi niya.


Nilingon ko si Aidan, whose face was white as chalk, his eyes blank and fixed at a certain point outside the window. Si Liam naman, kanina pang hindi mapakali doon sa harapan. He kept fidgeting here and there, while I remained silent in my seat kahit pakiramdam ko sasabog na ko.


I felt scared.
Parang ayoko na gusto ko na makarating sa hospital. Gusto ko kasi sobrang kinakabahan na ako at gustong gusto ko nang makita yung dalawa. Ayoko kasi—


Stop it, Ria, I told myself firmly. They’re safe and in good hands so stop being so effing morbid.

Finally, the car came to a screeching halt in front of an old hospital. I handed the driver some money, thanked him profusely and told him (yelled, more like) to keep the change as the three of us raced towards the ER.

Inside was a terrible chaos. The room was packed with men yelling, women screaming and children bawling at the top of their lungs. I could hear at least a dozen names simultaneously being yelled at the nurses’ counter, where the women in uniform were trying their best to calm the crazy queue in front of them.

I saw Liam squeeze himself into the angry mob, but Aidan went and harshly pulled him right back as he got shoved around, unable to get in front.

“Let me through you FCUKERS!”
“Shut up and calm down. This isn’t the place to practice your truck driver vocabulary.”
“Let go of me, damn it!”

I was pulling them off each other when I saw a familiar face pass by— a woman dressed in a more elaborate white uniform, on her chest a gleaming badge which read HEAD NURSE.

“Tita?”

She turned to face me, surprised. She was my dad’s sister.


“What are you doing here?”

“Papunta po kami ng Baguio—...”

“Kasama ka sa—?”

“No, Tita, but I really need your help,” I said, forgetting all about courtesy. “Two of our friends were in the accident, I was hoping we could find them here...”

“Ok,” she said, sensing the tensed urgency in my voice. “Follow me.”


I glared at Aidan and Liam who still looked ready to kill each other and signaled them to follow us.


“Ma’am!”

Anak ng patolang nurse naman to, aabalahin pa kami, kita nang—



“What?”

“Ma’am pakipirmahan po...”

“Sige, akina, ibibigay ko sayo mamaya.”

“Ma’am, kung pwede raw ngayon na po.”

“What’s with the rush?”

“Immediate release order po sana, kasi kailangan na daw talagang palabasin yung anak ni Senator Yutanco—...”

“Mga paimportante,” she said, tapos she harshly grabbed the clipboard and signed it. “Now get off my sight and tell the others to leave us alone!”


My aunt angrily led the way towards a cramped, whitewashed office where more nurses were scrambling in and out of sight, their hands full of bottles and tubes.


“Anong pangalan?”

“Lopez. Camilla Denise.”

“Ok,” she said in a defeated sort of voice.
“Sasamahan ko kayo papunta sa kanya... ano pangalan nung isa?”

“Reyes. Elladora Kathleen.”
























My aunt looked at us dejectedly.







“She’s not here. ”
