Chapter Fifty

Gellie’s POV

“I’m sorry, Gellie.”

Staring blankly at Dra. Canlas, I felt her pull me up to a standing position.

“Can I just—…?”

“By all means.”

Sinamahan niya ako hanggang sa loob. The sight that greeted me upon entering made me want to scream, but I was too weak to do so. Half of me wanted to run away… the other half ached to hold him for what I know to be the last time.

It was just too much for me to handle.

“I’ll just be outside if… if you need me.”

I simply nodded. Hearing the curtains drawn, I slowly walked towards him, with tears falling like boulders down my face. I clasped his hand tightly… he was still warm.

“Ang tindi mo,” I said. “I wanted you to come for me… But not this way! Ang fail mo naman talaga e no? When are you ever going to learn!?”

He was handsome, even in death.
I seem to have forgotten how cute he was, and how he had made me fall for him….

It was all coming back. The first time I met him… the day he relentlessly pestered me to come to his birthday…

“Don’t leave me, Rafs,” I whispered, choking in between sobs. “Ni bu yao li kai wo…”

Sinubsob ko yung mukha ko sa balikat nya. Dun ako nag-iiyak.






























And then I heard him laugh.








































WAIT.
Laugh?!

I literally jumped backwards and landed on my butt as he sat up, laughing hard.

“GOODNESS! I’m a terrible actor. ”

My eyes went as wide as space shuttles as I watched him wipe the blood off his face.

“This thing’s itchy. And you just spoke in Mandarin! Good gracious. This day was wild ”



“ANAK KA NG—!”

I got one of the steel instrument trays, and was about to bonk it over his head when I was restrained by a number of hands from truly murdering Rafael Yutanco.

“HIJA! MAGHUNOS DILI KA!”

Dra. Canlas successfully got the tray off my hands. The other nurses were nervously looking at me, as though I was a deranged lunatic.

“You were all in the plan, weren’t you?!”

“Sorry, hija. Inaanak ko sa binyag yang batang yan, hindi ako makatanggi… lalo na, nagmanikluhod sa opisina ko. Naku Gellie, pagbigyan mo na, please? Tingnan mo! Nagpakadesperado at nagkunwaring patay! Susginoo!”

Inalis nung ibang co-nurses ko yung mga gamit sa paligid, even the heavy oxygen tank.

“You need to talk.We’re leaving you here.”

Sinara na ulit yung curtains.
Shoot. Wala akong choice. EDI SIGE. MABULOK NA KAMI RITO, HINDI KO PA RIN SIYA KAKAUSAPIN.

But on second thought—

“Alam mo ba kung anong ginawa mo, ha?” sabi ko, sabay suntok ng sunod sunod sa chest nya. “Akala mo nakakatawa ka?! HINDI! NAKAKABWISIT KA! NAKAKAIRITA! ARGH! YOU’RE SO STUPID!”

“Punch me all you want.”

I stopped, furious. He looked perfectly calm as he stared at me, his face still stained crimson.
Infairview, his corny tactic worked. AGAIN.

“Why did you have to do that?!”

“Hindi ka sumasagot sa phone eh. Naisip ko, I have to find a way to talk to you. Kasi naisip ko kung pupuntahan kita rito, pwede ka pa rin magtago… so eto. Sinigurado kong kakausapin mo ko! ”

Touching my face with both hands, he turned my face to be able to look at him directly.

“Wag ka na magalit. Please?”

“Wag mo na uulitin yun a,” I replied, frowning. “Pag inulit mo ipapadala talaga kita sa embalsamador! Naintindihan mo?!”

“Kaw kasi. Selosa ka. Magseselos ka na lang, kay Ria pa. Eh mas lalake pa sakin yun!”

“Malamang, nakakainis kaya, kung nakita mo kung paano ka magkwento tungkol sa kanya…”

“Kaw nga din, pag binabanggit mo si—

“Ay naku! Binabalik mo yung blame sakin!”

“Look,” he said, his face now serious. “The mere fact that you’re Angeli Fandino makes you worth more than a thousand Rias to me. Okay?”

“Weh. ”

“Oo nga! I’m serious!”

I looked at him, checking for any signs of a smirk.

“See? You believe me. You’re blushing o.”

“Who’s blushing?” I replied, lightly slapping him on the arm. He laughed, then hugged me. I couldn’t resist smiling.

“Gellie?”

“Yep?”

“Wo ai ni…”

“Wo ye ai ni.”

Natawa ako.

“So… tuloy na tayo tomorrow?”

“Oo. Pero maliligo muna ako. ”


26 hours later…


Ria’s POV

“Psst. Tahimik mo.”

“Ah. Sorry.”

“Wag ka na mabadtrip. Sayang make up mo! ”

Paano ba kong hindi mababadtrip, eh andito ko kina Elle at Aidan nakisakay.
Tanong niyo bakit?

Kasi ayun ang date ko. MISSING IN ACTION. Hinintay ko simula kaninang alas otso.
Buti na lang, dumaan sila Aidan at Elle sa bahay namin. 10pm na yun.
Sabi ko na nga ba, mangyayari to e.

Inabot ni Elle yung kamay ko.

“Don’t fret. Aidan and I will take care of him when we get there. Ok? For now, I want us to have fun. Pwede ba yun?”

“Sige.”

“Free flowing drinks! WOOOOT”

“Hoy. Di ka pwede uminom ng marami a.”

“Yes Sir!”

“Hoy little sis ikaw din. Kahit may rason ka pa para uminom, hindi pwede.”

“Yes Kuya.”

“Don’t worry, andun si Lance. Hindi ka papabayaan nun.” said Aidan, flashing me a knowing smile.

Naisip ko na naman tuloy si Lance.
Nalito ako. Katangahan talaga tong ginagawa ko e.

Pagkadating namin ng venue, nakita ko na kung gaano kaganda. Sa labas pa lang, kita mo na yung mga ilaw. Pumunta muna kami dun sa Pose N Print. Nakakahiya pa rin, mukha tuloy akong tanga, paningit sa kanila. Naaappreciate ko naman yung effort nila, syempre… pero kasi nakakahiya.

Naku Angelo.
Pag nakita talaga kita…

Hinila ako bigla ni Elle palayo.

“Are you okay?”

“Oo naman. Thanks sa inyo ni Aidan.”

“Don’t worry too much, okay?”

“Do you mind if I go and look for Gelo?”

“Ok lang. Pero…”

“Kailangan na talaga naming mag-usap…”

“Sigurado ka?”

“I should have done this a long time ago…”

She stared at me pityingly.

“You were right all along," I conceded.

Napayakap siya bigla sakin.

“Sa wakas! HAHAHA!”

“Baliw ka Elle!” I said, letting go of her… then I saw Gellie, Rafa, Maffy and Jon coming.

I immediately went to hug Gellie.

“Mare! I’m so sorry…”

“Don’t say sorry, silly!”

“Ano? Inuman na!”

“Haha! Baliw! Are you okay?”

“Ok lang. Enjoy muna kayo dyan, okay?”

“Saan ka pupunta?”

“Basta. Babalik ako.”

Naglakad na ako.
On the way, I saw Denise.

“Den!” sabi ko. “Ang ganda mo ah! Si Liam, di mo kasama?”

“Ah… si Liam, nag-CR…”

“Bakit ka panicky?”

“Ha? Ako? Hindi a!” sabi niya, sabay hinila niya ako. “Tara puntahan na natin sila.”

“Teka lang, may hahanapin lang ako.”

“Dito ka na lang… please? Wag ka nang pumunta dun.”

Tiningnan ko siya ng mabuti.
I saw something peculiar with the way she was acting, and I knew I had to act quick.

“Sige, puntahan mo na sila. Sandali lang ako.”

“Ria—

“Denise, please.”

I quickly let go of her hand, not giving her any time to protest. Running, (atop spindly 4-inch heels) I went against the throng of people who were already crowding into the venue. I struggled, but eventually emerged into the outside hall, which was also quite packed.

Then I saw him.

Anger, white-hot and furious, exploded at the pit of my stomach, rendering me incapable of thinking straight.
There he was, his face red— evidently drunk, sitting on one of the stools… with his arm around another girl’s waist.

They were kissing. Torridly.

I went and walked towards them.

“YOU—

Someone got there first.
A big, heavily muscled guy had crossed the hall, and upon reaching them… he pulled Gelo’s collar and punched him.

I screamed.

Gelo’s nose started bleeding.

“I TOLD YOU TO STOP SCREWING HER, DIDN’T I?!”

The guy aimed another kick at Gelo’s face, but missed… the latter stood up and attempted to fight back, but I was quick to restrain him from doing it…

“STOP!”

“GET THE FCUK OFF ME!”

Gelo pushed me with such force that I fell, hitting my head on one of the bar’s stool chairs.
I blacked out for a moment, the lights swimming in and out of my vision. Three men were pulling the muscled guy out of the hall. There was a lot going on but I could hardly concentrate…

I felt something trickling down my forehead.
Slowly, I lifted my hand and touched the spot, it was hot… it was sticky…

It was red.

I cried on the spot and stood up.
Not because I was jealous, not because I was humiliated…

But because he had actually hurt me with his own hands— something I never thought he’d do…
And this was the second time.

I can’t let it happen again. Ever.

Still dizzy, I saw him turn to face me. He looked like he had difficulty in recognizing me.

“Ria?” he asked, narrowing his eyes, perhaps in an effort to clear his vision. Lumapit siya sakin. “Oh god no…”

“DON’T EVEN DARE.”

Naglakad na ako, trying to keep a straight line.
He pulled me me into a hug. And I was just too weak to resist…

“I didn’t mean to… didn’t know it was you… I’m so sorry…”

“Get off me.”

“No… Ria please—

“I can’t do this anymore. I’ve had enough.”

With an enormous effort, I pushed him off and went on my way, with nothing on my mind but my friends.

“You can’t leave me… please…”

“No!”

He managed to lock me in his arms once more, and I couldn’t get off. In spite of myself, my knees were buckling, not because I wanted to lean on him, but because I was close to passing out.
Looking around, I noticed we have gone into a dark, deserted corridor. There was nothing in sight, except for a couple of elevators.

The pain in my head was unbearable, and my vision was starting to turn black…

And then I felt something else.

There was a tingling sensation on my face, moving from my cheeks to my mouth.
He was kissing me…

“No…”

I pushed him, but he hardly budged. He moved to my ear and neck, and then he effortlessly pinned me against the wall—

“STOP!”

“I can’t… I won’t… ”

It intensified. He was kissing me more passionately, while I moved my face to keep my face away…

“NO! STOP IT! PLEASE!” I cried, now tasting a mixture of blood and tears. “GELO!”

“Why?”he asked, stopping as he looked at me with fury in his eyes. “You’re ditching me, huh? No. Akin ka lang.”

And then I felt his hands all over my body, his right hand was working its way up my skirt, while the left caught the knot on my halter blouse…

“NO! STOP!” I screamed, but it was too late. “ANGELO!”

The strap of my dress had come off, and I closed my eyes as fear and exhaustion consumed me—
 
“RIA!”

There was a sickening crunch, and I fell to the ground, with nothing to support me. The strap of my blouse was dangling helplessly off my shoulders, though my top was still fortunately clinging on me. I lay there, sprawled, watching Liam and the others take care of Gelo—

Someone had scooped me up into a sitting position.

“Ria? RIA! TALK TO ME!”

I cried I’ve never cried in my life.
Here was my refuge, the one I had left and hurt so many times…

The one I wanted to choose from the start—

“Sh1t!” Lance screamed.

He removed his jacket.

I must be dreaming…
He was here.
The one I’ve loved all along…

“Here,” he said, wrapping me with it. “Stay awake for me, Ria. Please.”

“I will,” I muttered weakly.

And then I heard footsteps and voices…

“Ria!”

“Is she okay?”

“What happened to her blouse?”

“Sh1t! Did he—

“Let’s go!” he shouted to the others. “LIAM! THAT’S ENOUGH! SHE’S BLEEDING!”

I opened my eyes for a fraction of an inch, seeing all of my guy friends— Liam, Aidan, Jon and Rafa, surrounding Gelo, who was on the ground clutching his stomach.
I felt no remorse as I watched him cringe in pain.

“Come on! We have to get her to the hospital!”

“What’s going on here?”

One of the bouncers had come.

“Way to go,” Liam told the bouncer. “A girl was almost raped and none of you were here to prevent it…”

“HELP…” Gelo muttered. “Help me…”

Liam was about to aim another kick but Aidan and the bouncer had pulled him back.

“Enough, Liam. Sir, kayo na po bahala magdala nyan sa hospital. Guys tara na.”

Binuhat ako ni Lance, and in a while nakasakay na kami. Having no idea where I was or where we were heading, I had my head on his chest the whole time, half-conscious.

“I never should have let you do this,” Lance whispered. His voice broke. “I’m so sorry…”

I felt a heavy drop on my face.

Chapter Fifty
continued…

It was all a blur.
For some reason, I had kept myself awake from the time we were in the car, until I was pulled into the emergency room where a number of people in white had stitched me up.

My head throbbed dully.

I looked all around the room, my eyes only half-open — Elle, Maffy, Denise and Gellie were asleep on the couch, while Jon was in the other chair, snoring.
There were even sleeping bags at the foot of my bed, where Rafa and Liam lay, their polos and slacks disheveled.

Needless to say, I had ruined their first AdHoc night.

A tall figure had entered the room, looking gloomy. I immediately closed my eyes and feigned sleep.

“Tingnan mo ugali ng mga lokong to,” he said, sounding a little ticked off. “Tulugan ba daw?! SABI KO BANTAYAN AMP.”

The chair beside me creaked, and then I felt a gentle touch on my forehead.

“Good,” I heard him mutter. “No fever, no swelling either, thank God. Sorry I had to leave you. Had to talk to your doctor… wait what’s that on your—

SHOOT.
Good Lord, please don’t let it be snot.

“Oooohh. An eyelash. Pwede ako yung magwish?”

Again, I opened my eyes for a peek— he had his eyes closed and he was holding something I couldn’t see between his thumb and index finger.

WHOOPS!
I closed my eyes right back just in time as he opened his.

“There. Can’t tell you my wish. Baka di magkatotoo eh. Hehehe.”

Suddenly, I felt him lift my hand off the bed.

“Why do you always manage to get yourself into hospitals? Kung hindi ka nahahagisan ng kutsilyo, nahuhulog sa cheerdance, eto naman. Ba’t ba parang patanga-tanga ka palagi?”

Bastos to ah.

“Joke. Wag ka magalit.”

Oh no. Alam nyang gising ako? WEH?

“Haha. Buti na lang tulog ka. Kundi siguro, kanina mo pa ko pinatay.”

Natawa siya mag-isa.
Senglot ba to?

“Pero okay lang. Sanay na ko.”

AY. Ang cheesy ni Kuya. Pagdramahan daw ba ang tulog.

“Ewan ko ba. From the start, I’ve always thought you were a piece of work.”

EXCUSE ME?!
Kung ako piece of work, ikaw Signal Number Four! CHEH. Tigilan mo nga ako.

“It got so bad that I actually considered falling for you as one of the biggest mistakes I made.”

Kapal mo. Dukutin ko mata mo dyan eh.

“But it’s not,” he said, laughing. “You know what my biggest mistake is?”

Dami mong mistakes a, epic.

“I let you go. Okay lang yung once eh, tolerable pa siguro. Pero yung twice? Katangahan. Sino ba kasi nagpauso ng ‘If you love her, set her free?’  T*ngina kabobohan eh.”

“Ang daming nasayang na oras… I risked it… I risked you…”

His tone changed.

“Maybe it’s my pride or my abnormally inflated ego. Either way, here I am, giving them both up.”

OMG.
Parang gusto ko biglang gumising. HIHIHI.

“I guess it’s about time I fought for you.”

AY. Di ko na kaya to.

“Wag ka na magalit ha? Babawi naman ako e.”

Hindi yan sinasabi, ginagawa yan. HAHAHA.

“Pagaling ka na agad ha. Para di mo ko masyadong mamiss.”

DARNIT. I’m fighting not to smile.
Ria umayos ka nga. Yan hirap sayo konting hirit nya, tiklop ka. WEAK KA PALA EH.

Nagulat na lang ako biglang umugong yung upuan nya.
I felt a warm, gentle kiss on my forehead that lasted forever.

He stroked my hair and chuckled.

“Wo zhen de hen ai ni, Adrianna.”
