Dehydration occurs when the amount of water used by the body is greater than the amount being spent by it. Well, we can live weeks without food, but not without water right? I remember when my sister had amoebiasis and couldn't drink the water she needed. For only 2 days without water her skin looked really bad and her head was like a skull.

Water is important for us for we use it to breathe, to cool our body down (through sweat) and to get rid of our waste products (urinating). Imagine if you breathe harder, your skin lacking water and wastes inside your body. I guess the cure would be the lacking problem: Water itself :) Or any other liquid with electrolytes in it :)

i havent been dehydrated yet.
but according to the Integrated Management for Childhood Illnesses, not everyone who has dehydration should be in the hospital, except for exacerbated cases. some could have home therapy or they could stay in the Rural Health Center.

children are more prone to dehydration because they have lots of fluid in their body. this condition may rise due to fluid loss (diarrhea and vomiting, etc), due to metabolic anomalies (decrease in antidiuretic hormone, diabetes mellitus/ insipidus.),etc. these could be aggravated by what we call insensible fluid losses (sweat, or others which could not be measured).

the main reason why dehydration occurs is that we do not have enough fluid that our body could utilize to maintain normal body process, or simply to maintain homeostasis,. and the single, and most important management for dehydration is fluid and electrolyte therapy.

(^info above is based on my recollection of what i have learned in my 4 yrs of nsg). haha. so in case i have posted something inaccurate, refer to this nalang:

http://www.rehydrate.org/dehydration/

kaya, we have to drink lots of fluids, esp if you're in any physical activity. :)

i'm always dehydrated, each time i cry. :D
seriously, kapag umiiyak kasi ako, tumatagal ng mga 3-4 hours and nonstop talaga pagtulo ng tears. :-[ so ayun, kadalasan nauubusan na ako ng tubig sa katawan tuwing umiiyak ako.
ang ginagawa ko to cure it, inom ako mga 8 glasses of water and matutulog ako. yun.

in some cases, pag grabe na yung effect nung dehydration sa pasyente, yea, dinadala na talaga sa hospital. :)

ahaha. siguro exaggerated lang ako. ;D
pero kasi pag umiiyak ako, nahihilo ako then pag hindi nakainom agad ng tubig, magco-collapse. ;D

Dehydration (hypohydration) is defined as an excessive loss of body fluid. It is literally the removal of water (Ancient Greek: ὕδωρ hýdōr) from an object, however in physiological terms, it entails a deficiency of fluid within an organism.

There are three main types of dehydration: hypotonic (primarily a loss of electrolytes, sodium in particular), hypertonic (primarily a loss of water), and isotonic (equal loss of water and electrolytes).[1] In humans, the most commonly seen type of dehydration by far is isotonic (isonatraemic) dehydration which effectively equates with hypovolemia, but distinction of isotonic from hypotonic or hypertonic dehydration may be important when treating people who become dehydrated. Physiologically, it is important to understand that dehydration, despite the name, does not simply mean loss of water, as water and solutes (mainly sodium) are usually lost in roughly equal quantities to how they exist in blood plasma.

Symptoms may include headaches similar to what is experienced during a hangover, muscle cramps, a sudden episode of visual snow, decreased blood pressure (hypotension), and dizziness or fainting when standing up due to orthostatic hypotension. Untreated dehydration generally results in delirium, unconsciousness, swelling of the tongue and, in extreme cases, death.

The treatment for minor dehydration often considered the most effective is drinking water and stopping fluid loss. Plain water restores only the volume of the blood plasma, inhibiting the thirst mechanism before solute levels can be replenished. Solid foods can contribute to fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea.
