“Enough crazy guy, enough.” I waved my hand in front of his face.

“Loser.”

“Whatever.” I declared. “I’m not a fourth grader so don’t treat me like one.” I walked out on him in the bookstore. But he got hold of my hand as soon as I got out of the bookstore and he turned me around.

“Taray mo.” I just raised my eyebrows as if saying ‘Anything else?’ because I didn’t understand what he just said. “Why are you being so moody today?”

I pulled my hand away. “Should there be a reason not to be?” I started walking. “And besides, I’m tired.”

“You got tired with just guessing what places were on those postcards? Lame excuse.”

“It was boring okay? I want to see real things, not pictures.” I pushed the door of a coffee shop but Lorenz stopped me.

“Na-uh. We’ll drink Taho.” Whatdaheck. Taho? “It doesn’t taste like Java or latte, but it’s good.” We walked for what seemed forever and I felt pain going up my legs.

I stopped walking. “Lorenz I said I’m tired. My feet and legs hurt. I think we’ve already gone a mile by now.” I massaged my legs. “Where in hell is that Taho shop?”

“Taho shop?” He asked.

I pressed my hands firmly on my right leg where it felt sore. “Yeah. Taho shop; like a coffee shop or you know, shoe salon. DUH.” He looked like he wanted to laugh and I just stared at him, stopping the kneading I was busy with. But even before I spoke, he laughed madly.

It took a minute or so before he replied. “There is no taho shop. It is sold in the streets. But it’s really delicious.” He looked around. “Ayun! Sandali lang ah.”He said and ran.

Gosh, was he not tired?

I saw him talking with a guy carrying what looked like two pails tied in a flat bamboo. The guy opened each of the pails and scooped something to two cups. Afterwards, Lorenz came back and gave me one of the taho-filled cups. “It’s not poisonous, taste it.” He smiled and drank half of his taho.

I gave it a try and smiled at the taste of it. “Yummy huh.” He nodded.

“Let’s go back to your house and let’s rest our sore legs.”

We arrived after a few minutes and heard someone singing as we walked towards my door.

“Tonight I’m falling and I can’t get up. I need your loving kindness to come and pick me up...”

“I think someone is at your house...” Lorenz said stopping me. “Stay here—”

“I think I know that voice.” I rushed to my apartment and nearly screamed. “Brooooooke! How did you know my address?” I gave the sexy figure wearing a sundress a hug. “I miss you. Where have you been? I thought you’re still in the States.”

She smiled at me. “I miss you too. Well I was in States about 18 hours before. And I’ll live with you since I already dumped my....” she stopped and counted with her fingers, “...eighth boyfriend. FYI, he gave me a pair of fake Louis Vuitton shoes. What a loser.” I gaped at her. “Hey, you look sexy in that top and cargo pants huh.”

Then, Lorenz came to the picture. “Lei, are you—”

“Ohhh, hi there. Are you Lei’s houseboy?” She picked her bags and almost smashed them to Lorenz’ chest. “Kindly help me with my stuff. Thanks a lot.” Then, she grabbed the keys from my hand and opened my door. “Oh, just put them in the living room.” She walked inside. “It is so hot here. HEY LEI, do they have AC in this country?!” she shouted.

Lorenz and I looked at each other and I smiled weakly. I couldn’t do anything but mouth sorry as I picked one of the big bags. “I guess we won’t be able to rest my legs after all.”

“Nahh. You rest; I’ll take care of these.” He took the bag from my hand.

“No. Brooke is my visitor.”

“Leeeiiii! I love your sheets, they’re linen.”

“Filipinos are naturally hospitable, especially to visitors.” He easily walked inside my house carrying all Brooke’s things.

“HEY.” He stopped and glanced back. “You are my visitor.”

“Lemme think about that...” He paused and grinned, “...well, are you a Filipino?” I just laughed my way inside because it was again, one of his Filipino acts.

It was late in the afternoon when Brooke finally finished fixing her stuff in the spare room. It seemed to me that she brought her whole wardrobe and most of her accessories. Of course I didn’t have time to rest because I had to help her. Lorenz, on the other hand, already went to Therese to help her out too.

“You know what? I think I need a jog.” Brooke put on her jacket and headed downstairs. I followed her.

“You’re not tired yet?”

She got bottled water and smiled, “I never get tired.” She started jogging towards the door but stopped. “Oh I do at times... in bed.”

I shooed her in disgust. “Get out.” She just laughed.

“See ya later. OH, I’m gonna bring home a surprise for you.” She smiled and left. As soon as she got out of the house, I went to the bathroom to get a hot bath. It was a very long day and I felt like Brooke and Lorenz sucked all the energy from me. When I got out, it was a surprise that Lorenz was there watching cartoons.

“Hey. You didn’t even knock.” I said, drying my hair with a towel.

“I did but you didn’t answer and I figured that meant yes.” He said casually. “...And you left the TV on.”

I sat beside him. “Crap. I hate these legs. They’re painful.”

“Give them to me.” I looked at him, confused. “I said give your legs to me.” I didn’t move so he gently held my feet in the palm of his hands; put them on his lap, moving me sideways. “Massaging came from the West and Filipinos just got influenced. Good thing they shared massaging coz until now, people do this for a living.” He moved his way from my feet up to my legs.

“You’re good at it, by the way.” I looked at his face, admiring his eyes and the tanned skin probably brought by his work under the sun in the province.

He shifted his glance to me. “I know. My mom always tells me that.”

“It’s true.” He just nodded. I really felt edgy with what we were doing. But despite the uneasiness, I knew that my legs felt nice and warm under his touch. “UH, I’m sorry for Brooke this morning. She’s really like that.” I smiled and he nodded again. “...And you must stop acting like a houseboy because you aren’t.”

“There you go.” He gently put my feet back to the couch, my legs up to my chest. “I don’t see myself as a houseboy. I’m just helping the ladies.”

“Oh, come on. Stop your Filipino acts.” I pushed my legs down to a normal sitting position.

“I can’t help it, I’m a Filipino.” He joked.

“Stop the drama. I’m tired and I need rest.”

Suddenly, he drew my head to his shoulder. “My shoulders give rest.”

“Well I have a bed for better comfort.”

“But there’ll be no Lorenz in your bed.” I removed my head from his shoulder and looked at him. “Hehe. I was just kidding.” He pulled my head back. “Come on, just this time.”

“You’re so weird and most of the time I—”

“Shhh.” He gently passed his hand on my eyes. “Close your eyes and sleep.” I followed what he said. A few seconds had passed when he started to hum an unknown song. It was relaxing in its own way and it made me feel like he sang it from within.

After the song, I heard him say something.

“Tama ba ‘tong ginagawa ko?”

Then I dozed off to dreamland.
