VI. "I COLLECT SOULS";;this is an offer you can't refuse.
Celia frowned and kept walking. It wasn’t that late into the evening so people were still about. She knew that he wouldn’t dare hurt her in front of others. A part of her wanted Lucian to kill her, but childhood Sunday school lessons had taught her that to play with death was a sin. It was a sin to live and it was a sin to die. Either way, she lost.
“
I won’t harm you tonight.” Lucian promised. He pointed to a cafe. “
We can talk there.”
“
I can’t. People might recognize me.”
“
I know you. I know everything about you. You’re Celia, Lilith’s kin. I know that you’ve changed so much that no one will recognize you.”
“
How would I know? I can’t see my reflection,” she said scornfully, but she couldn’t help being afraid. Why did he know so much about her?
He took his knife, the same one he had used to kill the girl, and held it in front of her face. She could see her reflection on its surface. She looked... older to her eyes. She was pale and emaciated, her hair was cut short raggedly and this time, she could almost pass for a boy. She didn’t look like the Celia she remembered. She looked like a hollow shell of a person.
He withdrew the knife and tipped his head pleasantly. “
So, shall we? My treat.”
------------------------------
The cafe owners seemed to be in a hurry to close shop, but they were pleased when Lucian entered.
“
Good evening, Mr. Ferrer,” the owner greeted him. He ushered them to the best seats in the cafe.
“
What will you be having, Lilith?”
She was silent. Lucian ordered for the both of them, exchanging pleasantries with the owner. When the man left, Celia spoke.
“
Cut it out. You know name isn’t Lilith,” she replied angrily. “
And I’m not in the mood for small talk. Do you know how I can stop this... this disease? And were you the one who left the note on my bed?”
He laughed. “
No. You can never return to life again. Why are you so against it? People have paid me such a high price just for a taste of immortality. And yes, it was I. It was my way of saying hello.”
“
Who are you?”
“
I’m Lucifer, at your service.”
This... this man was the devil?
She was talking to the devil.“
Now I’ve heard everything. I wouldn’t have believed you a month ago, but now that I’m a vampire even Bigfoot seems real.”
“
He is real,” he smiled. “
Anyway, why don’t you join me? I know you crave blood. I can see it in your eyes.”
Screw you. Screw you and screw Damien for treating me like a monster.“
It’s none of your business.”
“
I’m afraid it is my business. You see, I’m a busy man. I have a lot of things to handle as a mortal and if I left my real job to you, then it would be easier for the both of us. It’s a win-win situation. I buy myself more time, you get an endless supply of blood. There are so few of Lilith’s kin in these parts, so I’m turning to you.”
“
What’s your real job?” She cut in.
“
I collect souls.”
“
You killed the children to get their souls? Why do that? And why only chidren?”
“
When I was cast out of heaven, I was given leave to tempt man. I grow weary of it. I prefer taking a more direct approach. Why do that? At the end times, when the sinners are separated from the righteous, the unholy will be cast off to a dark place, removed from the lord. To put it simply, they’ll go to hell and I’ll have free reign there. I’m doing this to collect citizens for my empire.” His eyes gleamed with madness, even though he tone was still friendly.
“
But why children?”
“
In most cases, children’s souls are worth more than an adult’s. They are pure, much more to my liking than an adult’s sullied soul. My knife collects souls, of course.”
Celia was silent. He was asking her to kill children for him. If she accepted, then she’d never have to go hungry again. But doing that would mean totally giving up her last shred of humanity, her soul.
“
What about me? Is my soul tainted?”
The man cut his steak and licked his lips in delight. “
Delicious steak, Lilith. You should try it.” He held the fork to her lips. She shoved his hand away.
“
What will happen when I die?”
He scowled. She lacked good manners. “
You don’t have to die if you don’t oppose me. But at present, neither heaven nor hell will have you.”
“
Excuse me?”
“
You are an unholy creature. Have you ever heard of vampires in heaven? No. But so far, you haven’t given in to your true nature yet. It’s only a matter of time before you do, though.” He said this, biting into his steak, as if this was normal dinner conversation. “
So, do you accept my offer?”
Father Matthias. She remembered the priest.
“
Don’t hurt Fr. Matthias! He’s innocent!”
“
Much more to my liking, then.”
“
No! Please, don’t hurt him,” she pleaded.
He rubbed his chin. “
Do you accept my offer?”
“
No... I refuse to do that... but still...”
“
Then I can make no promises, Lilith.”
Despair filled the girl. She refused to let the demon see her cry. She stormed out of the cafe, her dinner untouched. Lucifer continued eating as if nothing had happened.
------------------------------
“
Who is she? She seems awfully rude,” the owner remarked.
Lucifer shook his head good naturedly. “
She’s my niece. You know how teenagers are.”
“
But aren’t you worried about her? There have been a lot of murders lately.”
“
Oh, no, I wouldn’t worry about her. Nothing will harm her tonight.”
He paid the bill and left.
TO BE CONTINUEDEXTRA SCENE LOL (:for those who like Celia/Damien“
You’ll be the death of me, I swear,” Damien said angrily.
“
Oh, shut up. You know there’s nothing to do here but watch The Passion of Christ and Jesus Christ Superstar over and over again.”
“
Do you have any idea of how mortified I was when I borrowed these for you?!”
He pointed to a stack of CD’s. Among them lay
The Devil Wears Prada, Brokeback Mountain, Legally Blonde, Pretty in Pink, Borat and
American Pie. His face was red with rage. Celia had begged him to borrow the movies for her and he had obliged, going to the video rental store still in his deacon’s cassock.
“
People were laughing at me! What are those movies about?!”
“
Do you live under a rock or something? You idiot,” she said, loading
Brokeback Mountain into Fr. Matthias’ player. The boy was still fuming, much more when he read the synopsis of the movie.
“
You...! You assured me they were wholesome movies!”
Celia rolled her eyes. But after a moment, she spoke. “
So I lied. But they aren’t all bad. And you look cute when you’re angry.”
He glared at her and slammed the door, in a hurry to get away from the girl. But he wasn’t quick enough to stop Celia from seeing the smile that he had tried to suppress.
