Prologue

FOOL.


Marcus stood outside the big golden door of the Elder’s mansion. He knew this was judgment day. The other night was a mistake—at least it was for them. But not for him. For more than a thousand years he lived his life according to the Order’s rules. He did not dare defy any of them. He was their faithful and ever obedient emissary. And yes, it did include being their assassin. Until they demanded too much.


“Kill her.” Dyke, one of the Elders ruling the Order told him.


“I won’t.” he shot back firmly. There was no way he was going to kill that child. He was never going to kill any innocent being—this was his only rule as a warrior. He’ll kill anyone except the innocent.


“My, do you dare defy the Order, Marcus? You are our warrior.” Dyke walked the distance between them so that he was now standing in front of him. ” We gave you immortality and in return you give us your service. Have you forgotten that?”


“No, I haven’t. You know that. You give me immortality and I give you my service. But you seemed to have forgotten one important part of that bargain—I do not kill the innocent.”
