CHAPTER 35
a.k.a EPILOGUE

“Winning team, Rawr Stealers!” The crowd bellowed.

“$#!@! I missed his game.” I mumbled to myself as I entered the grounds using Brian’s duplicate gate pass. “I missed the most important game of the season.”

“Oh-oh just look at that. Mr. Football player Brian Conniver rushes to hug a lady who just entered the ground!” The place became quiet. I looked around and saw Brian coming to me. “No other than his better half!” The crowd shouted again.

“We won the game.” He whispered to me. All eyes were on us and I felt it. “Why did you even tell the press about the Mrs. thing. I’m not your wife!” I pulled away softly. Yeah right, a nice way to answer.

“You’re not yet my wife missy. That time will come.” I felt goosebumps run over my body. “…you’re still my better half even if you’re just my girlfriend, aren’t you?” His eyes were joyful but there was something telling me that something was wrong.

“Whatever. Come on, I owe you something.” I pulled his hand towards the entrance to their room. They had just finished winning a game and all of them were rejoicing. “I just came here to check on you. I didn’t have the chance to watch the game… the train left the station late. I had this very important essay that needed to be finished last night, and I woke up late this morning.” I walked on till we arrived in a vacant room. “I’m sorry.”

I heard the door shut and I faced him. “Oh crap.” I covered my eyes. “Wear a shirt!” He only had his shorts on and the last thing I saw was his act of wiping the sweat on his chest.

“Heath, it’s just chest and abdomen. No other thing. It’s not like I have big boobs.” I hear a thud and I suppose he knocked himself in a chair. “You girls should get used to guys doing this. It’s so normal for us. Besides we get used in you girls wearing spaghetti.” Then I remembered I was only wearing spaghetti and baggy pants.

Slowly, I removed my hands from my eyes and looked at him only to be amazed by the built of his body. He was drop-dead gorgeous. He covered his upper body. “I said you get used to it, not stare at it.”

I flushed. “I—I wasn’t staring! I was just—”

He put his shirt over his shoulder and stood swiftly. “You are just in loss for words baby.” He took my hand and pulled me, but I pulled him back.

“I said I’m sorry.” I couldn’t look at him in the eye because I was so red.

He softly held my chin up to meet him in the eye. “You are beautiful today, aren’t you?” Ugh. Avoiding the question?

“I said I’m sorry Brian.” He didn’t answer and I knew that he was kind of disappointed because I missed the game of the season. “Come on. Don’t be too hard. I’m yours the whole day.” Then a smile appeared on his face.

“Great!” He hugged me and his shirt fell on the floor. Good thing his sweat dried off already.

“You are not mad, are you?”

“Am I supposed to be mad even if I have my girlfriend with me the whole day? I’ve missed you so much. I haven’t seen you for like years!”

“Brian, two weeks.”

“Whatever.” He gave me the kid-like grin again. “I am just so excited about this day!” He neared my face and our noses were touching. “Apology accepted.”

His lips and mine were almost touching when a guy pushed the door. “Let’s celebrate!” The guy was Mik and he held champagne in one hand and a football in the other. The other football team members were behind him.

I bit my lip… So wrong timing. They all stared at us like we were monsters. I pulled away from Brian. “Okay okay guys. Let’s just go to the next room. Some guy here needs to score in her girlfriend…” Mik said as they all went outside.

“NO! You were thinking wrong.” We both shouted at the same time. We exchanged glances. He wasn’t wearing his shirt and we were almost kissing when they arrived.

“Guys next time, go get a room somewhere and not here.” Then he shut the door.

Deafening silence filled the room as they left but I managed to speak. “Gosh, they’re crazy. Come on, let us go.” He put on his shirt and we went out.

We decided to visit my mom who lived in our old house. After what happened months ago, she realized the things she did to me and she went back to our place. I did forgive her and she also forgave me. It was like a miracle that she seemed to be the best mom in the universe.

“I really missed you Heath. No kidding.” He put his hand above mine as he drove.

“Don’t be silly, I missed you too...” As for me, I rented an apartment in Connecticut near the university I am studying. Brian and I are in a so-so long distance relationship but as we predicted, it worked for both of us.

“Mom!” I hugged mom as I saw her.

“Geez, you grew taller.” Taller? We all laughed.

“Mom, stop kidding. I will not grow taller anymore. I am already twenty.” I said. “How are you doing here?”

“I’m good.” She said as she poured juice for the two of us. “Someone’s always coming here to check me too.”

“Really? Who?”

“Patrick.” I looked at Brian. “He was here a while ago.” Brian drank the juice.

“I’m here!” I saw Patrick smiling down on me. “Hey, how are you two doing? And Brian, nice game huh.”

Brian nodded. “Steady. Strong. Safe.”

I looked at Brian. “Steady, strong and safe huh? That’s what we are?”

“Yeah and in love.” I almost choked in the muffins I was eating. I gave Brian the death-look. “What? We are in love aren’t we?”

“You are so corny.” I looked at mom. “He’s the corniest boyfriend I’ve ever had.” We all laughed except for Brian.

“If you call me corny because I said we are in love, you are corny too because you told me you love me eh?” That made me shut.

“Dear, it’s not corny. It’s sweet.” Mom smiled. Whatever.

“But really mom…” I looked at Brian because he never called my mom, mom. “…I love your daughter.”

“Hey hey. I think someone is about to propose eh?” Brian gave Patrick the glance.

There was a weird silence. “Anyway, how is Cass?”

“Oh about her—she called me the other day to check me. And she asked me to say hi to all. She’s with her dad in UK. She said she’s been seeing this cute French guy and they are hitting it off.” I smiled.

“I’m happy for her.”

Brian and I stayed there but we decided to leave when the clock struck seven. “Where are you guys heading?” Patrick asked.

“Somewhere over the rainbow…” I looked at him in shock. “…where football players play.”

“Psh. I don’t know what you’ve done for him to be like this Heather. He’s so gay.”

“Gay?” Brian came back to his senses… I suppose.

“Let’s go baby. I need to catch the train before ten.” I said as we went back to the car. He drove for about 45 minutes then finally we arrived in the field. “What’s this Brian?”

“Field?” I gave him the death-look. “Okay, okay.” He walked on and stopped. “I LOVE YOU HEATHER LANCOLN!” He shouted.

I went quickly to him. “Man, are you crazy?”

“If that is what you call it, then I am.” He looked at me and when he saw my face he laughed. “Don’t worry. This isn’t the first time I did that… so the people around here are used to it. Like, I go here every other day.”

“Just to shout that?” Crazy. Crazy. Crazy. This field is far away from his place and he goes here every other day?

“Yeah. Just to shout… I LOVE YOU HEATHER LANCOLN!”

“I know you Brian. What’s the craziness all about?”

“Well missy, this craziness…” He emphasized the word craziness. “…is called love.” I just smiled to myself. “I just want the whole world to know that I, Mr. Football player, am very in love with you.”

I blushed and he looked at me in the eye. “You know, I don’t know what to say.”

“I know. You’re having your oh-my-gosh-I’m-speechless moment.” He imitated me and I hit him softly on his chest.

Then an idea entered my mind.

“I LOVE YOU TOO BRIAN CONNIVER!” I looked at him and he seemed shock. I just laughed. “What?”

“You—you just did that.”

“Did what?” I said smiling. “Did this? I LOVE YOU BRIAN CONNIVER!” I shouted once again. “I’M CRAZY IN LOVE WITH THE HOT FOOTBALL PLAYER BRIAN CONNIVER!”

He laughed and I felt joy in my heart. “I love you too.” He wrapped me around his arms and kissed my forehead. “…and I always will.”
