CHAPTER 2

“Why the hell do you care?” I pulled my hand from his. But he tightened his grip. I hit his back because of his sudden stop.

He faced me. ”My concern isn’t for you.” I was loss for words… what he said added to the hurt in my poor heart.

“—I care for… I care for… for… for your uniform.” Huh? “It’ll get wet and muddy. You don’t know how hard it is to launder the clothes…” He unreasonably reasoned.

“Who are you anyway?!” I shouted at him. The rain poured harder.

“It’s not your business.” He carried me like a newly wed bride. UH-OH.

“Put me down jerk!”

“Not until I bring you back to your home!”

“My mom will kill me. I’m telling you, she’ll kill me without mercy!”

“She won’t…” I punched his chest but it didn’t seem to work. I looked at his face, I couldn’t see it. DAMN.

“Just put me down!!—” The next thing I knew, he ran so fast and it made me dizzy. I just closed my eyes.

He put me down on our porch. “There you go Heather. You’re safe back home.” I looked at him and noticed that he wore a football player uniform too.

“You know me?”

“Yeah. Who doesn’t know Heather Lancoln?” I imagined him smile behind the helmet.

“Who are you then?” I moved forward and motioned to pull his helmet up. He stopped me.

“I told you earlier, it’s not your business to know me.” He cupped my cheeks. I felt the current as he touched my face. It was something different. “I am someone different from who you think I am.”

He sighed. “I’m going home. Bye.” He moved away.

“Wait up. Can you stay with me for the rest of the night?” I smiled at him. I didn’t know what caused me to say those words. It just came out naturally.

“Really? Sure.” I could imagine him smiling back at me.

We sat on the stairs of our porch and talked like there was no tomorrow. I had the moment to share my problems and he wasn’t that bad as an adviser. Even if I didn’t know who he was, I was comfortable with him.

I yawned. He sighed.

“I know I’m a boring conversationalist but I am sure I have a soft shoulder.” I felt his hand move my head to his shoulder.

“Thanks uhmm… thanks for staying with me here.”

“No prob Heath. No prob.”

“You called me what?”

“Heath. Is it okay?”

“YEAH. Of course. No one has called me Heath. How am I going to call you anyway?”

He shrugged.

“Aaaahh.. I know now. I’m going to call you, Mr. Football player since you came with that helmet.” I pointed at his helmet, which until that time… he hadn’t removed.

“Nice. Mr. Football player.”

Suddenly, I heard my mom shout, “HEATHER’S LOST!! OH MY GOSH!”

I laughed. “I think you gotta go. My mom is looking for me and after three minutes, I am sure gonna die. And if she sees you, I’m gonna be double dead.”

He patted my head. “Take care Heath and don’t go out when it’s raining, okay?”

“Yes dad.”

“Ha. Ha. Ha.”

“I’m kidding.”

I wasn’t sure if I’d meet him again but then I said, “Take care too Mr. Football player.” I smiled at him even though I wasn’t sure if he smiled back.
