The Official Ateneo Thread (please proceed to page 1)
« on: April 19, 2007, 10:14:09 pm »
Hello fellow Ateneans! Welcome to our new official thread!

Since school/university threads are being deleted due to heavy load on the servers, I tried to reach a compromise with toy_addict and we got our own thread back. However, things will definitely change around here and I hope you adhere to the rules so that we could still have our own thread.

1. When this thread reaches more than 100[edited] pages, it is automatically locked and deleted, following the new teentalk rule. To maximize the allotted pages, please avoid posting conversations or spamming the thread.

2. Listed below are Frequently Asked Questions and other useful information taken from the old thread. Before posting a question, see first if the information you’re looking for is already in there. If not, then it’s time to post your question.

3. I’ll be posting all the Atenean teentalkers’ usernames and their respective year and course so you can communicate with through PM instead posting in the thread.

4. If your concern deals with a single person such as course matters, please use the PM feature or Who’s Who threads instead of posting into the thread. If he/she cannot answer your question, then it’s time to post.

5. No spamming, sticky caps and text lingo; as per teentalk regulations. I will allow occassional kamustahans and hellos but refrain from filling up the thread.

6. If any information below needs correction, please PM me so I can correct it. Also if you don’t find your name in the Atenean teentalkers’ list, please PM me with your information as well.

7. Always read the first page for updates and new information.

I know the thread might seem dominated by students from Ateneo de Manila, but all Ateneo schools are welcome here. Since I don’t know much about the other Ateneo schools, please post whatever useful info such as enrollment and admission process so that other teentalkers may benefit from it. This is the Official Ateneo thread afterall.

Hope you can help me maintain this thread so that we could keep it. I really hope we can make this work.

Love,
Marian

Admission Procedures

Ateneo de Manila

Secure an application form from the Office of Admissions and Aid in Ateneo de Manila or the nearest provincial center (for more information, please check www.admu.edu.ph for full list of provincial testing centers). Application and testing fee for applicants is 500.00. Application forms are released around late June to early July until early August.

As a part of the application requirements, the applicant must write an essay according to the prescribed topic. Tips for the essay: make it straight to the point; short and concise; never too flamboyant and be true to yourself. The essay should show who you really are.

With regards to the application, achievements, extra-curricular are a plus, but not a really a requirement.

The Ateneo College Entrance exam (ACET) covers English, Mathematics and general intelligence. There is also an on-the-spot essay to be written as a part of the exam.

Results will be released around the first week of January.

For more information, visit the OAA website: http://www.admu.edu.ph/index.php?p=35

Taken from pinoyexchange (http://pinoyexchange.com/forums/showthread.php?t=240835):

Quote

An ACET Primer

What is the ACET?

The ACET, or Ateneo College Entrance Test, is a requirement for admission to the undergraduate division of the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila Univesity.

Is it hard?

No.

But they say it's the hardest college entrance test in the Philippines...

That's what most people say. Others say that the DLSUCET or UA&P Entrance Test are harder. Of course, I believe that the reason why these tests are harder is because once you're done with the ACET and UPCAT, you don't really bother brushing up as much for these tests. B)

Okay, okay, so why is it (said to be) hard/the hardest?

The questions for the ACET are skewed for above-average students, and the test is conducted under time pressure.

Above-average? But I think I'm just an average student...

Don't get me wrong. When I say above average, I do not mean you need an IQ of 300 to pass. If you prepare well, and take the test well, you'll do fine. Promise.

Time pressure! I've heard about that. Is it true that the ACET isn't designed to be finished?

It isn't designed to be finished. That's true. However, the ACET CAN BE FINISHED.

How much time pressure are we talking about?

The time pressure depends on the section you're taking. As a general rule, keep this mindet:

Time Available = x/2, x/3, or x/5, where x = # of items in section. I've given several options depending on your level of personal comfort. This is so you won't panic, but will have to pace yourself.

How much does the ACET figure in deciding my Ateneo application?

Quite a lot. Of course, the Ateneo also looks at your high school grades, recommendations, and your essay. A high ACET score helps your case a lot, though.

How will a decision on my application be arrived at anyway?

Offhand, I think it goes like this:

- Did you pass the ACET? If no, goodbye, unless your background is exemplary and/or if you exhibit some potential to excel in college and after college (looked at using academic preparation, co-curricular activities, etc. as vouched for by third parties which may or may not include those who recommend you).

- How high did you get in the ACET? If middle or low, refer to high school grades and recommendations. If in upper 15%, you qualify for an honors course. If upper 2%, you qualify for the Director's List (meaning the Ateneo woos you with a wonderful debut-like extravaganza dinner and campus tour and a constant barrage of wonderful public relations initiatives). If you're in the top 20, you probably qualify for a merit scholarship.

- Are your high school grades decent? If no, refer to ACET score and recommendations.

- Are your recommendations positive about you? If no, then there's probably something wrong, right?

What about my essay?

Your Ateneo application form has an essay question.

Be truthful and candid. Make yourself known. Shine.

Of course, don't overdo it. You may have the next four years for melodrama and perhaps some more ego-padding.

What parts does the ACET have?

The ACET is basically divided into two main parts: an english and math proficiency test, and another part which basically tests general intelligence.

The first part consists of a longish english test, testing reading comprehension, language proficiency (grammar, mechanics, spelling), and some verbal ability. This is usually followed by a long mathematics test, which tests the following areas: arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and a little pre-calculus. In some sets, there are a few basic calculus questions (just one or two, perhaps just for kicks).

The second part tests you in the following areas: general information (facts, etc.), verbal reasoning (logic, etc.), abstract reasoning, and numerical ability. Numerical ability usually comes as the last part, and I think may be designed to induce panic, because this section usually consists of around 25 items to be answered in 5 minutes.

What sort of questions does the ACET have?

The ACET has multiple-choice questions only. They ask you to bring pencils so you can shade little circles or squares. The test is fed into a scantron-thing for checking, as far as I know.

Is there an essay portion?

Nope. You've got that as part of your other entrance requirements anyway.

(Offhand, I'd like an essay portion, though.)

[edited: As of this moment, there is an on-the-spot essay during the day of the ACET]

How many questions are there in total?

I don't know. This varies from year to year, I think. Besides, you will not need to keep track of how many questions there are.

Are the items right-minus-wrong?

No.

Is there a section in Filipino?

As of this writing, none.

How do I prepare for the ACET?

You mean you haven't prepared yet? Than what were all those years in lower, middle, and high school for? Seriously speaking, taking a college review seminar or buying one of those tester books won't really mean anything unless you've got a decent background already. In my opinion, preparation for the ACET is predicated on sufficient preparation PRIOR TO APPLYING TO THE ATENEO (meaning, before you even get your application form).

You may want to focus on the areas tested on (see above).

Are we allowed to bring scratch paper and calculators to the ACET?

Scratch paper will be provided. Calculators are not allowed (as of this writing).

What will I need to bring?

You're usually told what to bring to the testing date.

Can I bring snacks?

As of this writing, yes. I recommend food which keeps you awake (since the ACET is pretty tiring to take) or relaxes you. I remember bringing oreos and a bottle of mineral water. Some friends brought chocnut or chocolate or peanuts. I don't recommend bringing soda, since it can make your stomach go bad, which is something you will not want to happen during the ACET.

Who can I bring with me?

Aside from yourself? Anyone. Of course, you'll have to leave them once you enter the testing area.

What do I do before the ACET?

- Relax. CEASE STUDYING at least 24 hours before your testing day. Any brushing up you may do within that time frame may interfere with your long-term memory (which is what I hope you'll rely on when you take your test).

- Eat a bit. It's hard to take the test on an empty stomach. Don't eat too much, though.

- Go do your business (read: take a crap, take a pee). Enough said.

- Get well-rested. This means no late-night partying, hanky-panky, strenuous activities before testing day. You'll need the energy.

- Pray. This helps, honestly.

A friend of mine tried taking brain vitamins. They didn't help much. Although he was quite bright, I don't think he used the rest of his stay in high school to prepare for the test decently. He did worse than an average guy who decided to smoke some pot before the test (who passed, and is now dying painfully in his honors course).

- If it's entirely possible, drop by the Ateneo de Manila's Loyola Heights campus and take a tour. Use this image as motivation.

What do I do during the ACET?

- Do not go to sleep while taking the test. Do not go to sleep while taking the test. Do not go to sleep while taking the test. (ad infinitum)

- Turn your cell phone/2-way radio/pager/other form of external communication OFF. You do NOT want distraction.

- Do not get stuck on one question. Skip it, move on, and then come back for it. You'll be pressed for time.

- Pause from time to time to review your answers.

- Pause from time to time to sink your teeth into your snack, or take a swig of water.

- Keep track of the time using a watch IF AND ONLY IF you will not scare yourself out of your wits once you see how fast time can fly.

- Follow your proctor and whatever instructions there are in the booklet, especially those that tell you to stop at the end of a section. Going on ahead to the next section is unfair, and you just might get sent home for doing that (this will, of course, render your application forfeit).

- You will be given a bathroom break. Therefore, resist any irrational, most-probably-psychologically-induced urge to urinate or defecate. During your bathroom break, relax. Talk to fellow examinees and encourage each other. If you smoke, sorry, smoking isn't going to be allowed.

- Do your best to do well.

What do I do after the ACET?

- Resist the urge to scream. You can do that once you leave the testing area (and will be met with more screaming test takers).

- Try going around the Ateneo campus. This place just might be your home for the next four years!

- If you want to find a place to eat, the Katipunan area's got a whole slough of places, ranging from Filipino to Japanese to Italian food. There are also several fast food places. Cafes are also in the area. You may also want to troop to the UP Diliman campus (come on, you may want to bid the place goodbye since you'll want to attend the Ateneo more, right?) where there are some nice fancy places to eat too (i.e. Chateau Verde and Chocolate Kiss Cafe).

- Shopping and recreation centers are pretty near. The Ateneo campus is around 15 minutes from Eastwood City in Libis, 20 minutes from Ortigas, and maybe 30 minutes from Makati. It's also just a train ride away from Cubao's Gateway Mall and Araneta Coliseum (where the Ateneo Blue Eagles may be winning a UAAP basketball game!).

- I really really recommend heading for a Church and saying thanks to God for your getting through the ACET without too many emotional or psychological scars.

- Finish the rest of your senior year in high school trying to learn, and trying to finish well. Your final marks will be needed later.

How will I know that I passed the ACET?

Decisions on college and scholarship applications are posted usually within the first few weeks of February, on a set of boards at the Blue Eagle Gym. If you see your name, you either passed or are wait-listed (it will be indicated). If you don't see your name, you weren't accepted.

YAY! I passed the ACET! What next?

- Welcome to the Ateneo.

- Confirm your slot, quick.

- Did you get into your course of preference, if yes, submit what documents you may need, and then give yourself a pat on the back. Now, prepare for college. If not, write a letter asking for a change of course. Prepare for college.

- In the event you aren't allowed to change your course, do not be alarmed. You'll be able to shift courses in freshman year (and maybe your succeeding years) anyway.

OH NO! I got waitlisted!

- Follow procedure. Wait. Pray.

OH NO! I wasn't accepted!

Try to appeal your case. Follow procedure. Pray.

I hope that this little primer helps you with your application. In case there are things that I haven't answered, try finding them out on your own first.

Good luck!

Frequently Asked Questions by Freshmen

Frequently Asked Questions by Freshmen

Orientation Seminar a.k.a. OrSem

OrSem is an introduction to what Ateneo life is all about. It is a three-day long filled with fun activities. All freshmen go through the orsem and everyone enjoys it. You get to meet new people and friends: your blockmates and even your TnTs (upperclassmen who tour you around the campus and show you what Ateneo life is all about). You will also get to know more about your course through department talks.

We upperclassmen will make your orsem worth remembering. To make your Orsem experience more.. fun, take our advice.

Wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. Wag kayong pa-cute or sobrang over-the-top. Jeans and a t-shirt would do. Never wear stilettos or come in mini-skirts. One girl in my batch came in stilettos and mini-skirts and I think she became our laughing stock. Don’t ask why, we’ll leave that a surprise.

Bring lots of water, extra shirts and medicines if you have asthma and other related diseases. Orsem would be tiring and will test your endurance and patience, but it would be definitely fun.

Let down your inhibitions and have fun.

If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask your respective TnTs.

Orsem2007:Soundcheck! website: http://www.orsem2007.com

Block Sections

You will know your blocks around a week or two before your Orsem.

You will have this one "mother of all blocks" which is your course block. As the name suggests, everyone in that block belongs to the same course as you are but you will find out that this course block is somewhat useless in your first year because the only class that you will have with them is Filipino and INTAC. You will get to be with them in your second year.

The other block: Your english block.
You will find out in your OrSem that you will be divided in 3 different english "categories" (i cannot find a word to describe this one. haha) bases from your ACET scores in English. The basic english program (i do not know if it is apt to call them "programs" but who cares. ANYWAY, you will have 2 hours of English in the first sem. next sem pa kayo pwedeng mag take ng Lit), the regular english program (1 hour of english and 1 hour of lit) and the merit english (for those who are really gifted in english. haha.)

Your english block will be your classmates for a year and you will spend two hours every MWF with each other. In some cases, there are people who become more closer with their English blockmates than their course blockmates. Oh yeah, people in your english block would belong to different courses.

Misc Blocks: The math, natsci and PE block.
In this block, iba iba na ang mga courses ng kasama mo. In your PE block, you will have blockmates already in their sophomore year.

Classes on Freshman Year
The number of classes in a day depends on when you schedule your P.E. classes. It could be 4 subjects in a day (ex. my Wednesday schedule is English, Literature, Natural Science Lecture, Natural Science Laboratory).

You will be taking 16 units in total, excluding PE and INTACT.

There are no Saturday classes on your freshman year. But sometimes you'll be expected to attend seminars and INTACT activities usually held on Saturdays.

Classes are around 50 minutes for MWF classes and 1 hour 20 minutes for TTH classes. If a professor is not in your class within 10 mins on MWF classes and 15 for TTh classes without prior notice or text from him, you can consider yourselves dismissed.

English Classes

Sa OrSem, malalaman mo na english block mo. Pag R or M yung code ng english class mo, meaning Regular English and Merit English, respectively, hindi mo kelangan mag summer. Pero pag E code ng english class mo, meaning Basic English, kailangan mo mag summer. Pero it doesnt end there. Yung mga asa Basic English mag ddiagnostic test pa tapos pag pumasa ka, lilipat ka na ng Regular English, which means, hindi mo na rin kelangan mag summer!

Math Classes

For Math naman, may diagnostic test din. Pag pumasa ka dun, sa Math11 ka. Pero pag hindi ka pumasa, you have to take Math1 (Basic Math) and kelangan mo magsummer. May possibility na nasa Math11 tapos hindi mo napasa yung diagnostic test so lilipat ka ng Math1 and pwede ding Math1 ka muna tapos napasa mo yung diagnostic test, so lilipat ka na ng Math11!

Although there are exceptions, such as Math18 for Management Engineering, Environmental Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, there will be no diagnostic test needed.

Filipino Classes
Same as math classes, may diagnostic test rin. You will be transferred or remain in your class depending on the result. If you have a foreign passport, you will be taking foreing Fil classes.

Natural Science Classes

You will choose your natural science class except if you’re a science major (excluding BS MIS and CS). You will take two natsci subjects, one on each sem. To help you make your choice, here’s a couple of things to consider.

Environmental Science - This is probably the easiest and most fun of all the Nat Sci classes. It's a mix of both concepts and memorization for the lecture. But for Laboratory, it's more practical than knowledge based. You have to learn how to use the instruments.

Botany - Memorization. Prepare for lots of memorization. From plant structure, scientific names and plant function. Laboratory isn't much fun, you have to stare at microscopes for long periods of time.

Zoology - Same as Botany, memorization.. and lots of it.

Physics - Sabi sa akin more of conceptual ang physics. You have to understand concepts and apply them in equations etc.

Chemistry - Lab work is fun. You get to make ice cream! But for the lecture, it a bit tedious since memorization, analysis and concepts are all incorporated.

But then again, it all depends on the professor.

You'll be taking Nat Sci for two semesters. You get to choose two different subjects. If you get a low random number (see enrollment process) most people would choose Environmental Science, because it is the easiest natsci subject.

P.E. Classes

You will have PE subjects until your sophomore year. You will also get to choose your PE class. You cannot repeat a PE subject, unless you fail (which nobody does except when you use all your cuts). Here are the options to choose from.

pe lecture
aerobics
swimming
badminton
physical fitness
table tennis
tennis
running
soccer
weight training
basketball
arnis
volleyball
pencing
judo
ballroom dancing
tae-kwon-do
tai-chi
yoga
tap dance
modern jazz
advanced judo
Recreational Activities

Registration/Enrollment Process

Random Numbers

Random numbers determine the number in which you are to enroll your classes. For example, you have a random number of 100 and I have a random number of 150, you will get to enroll first.

The lower the random number you get, the better it is. If you have a low random number (anything below 200 is good) you get to choose the natsci and pe class that you want.

Payment

Cash, Checks and BPI Credit Cards are accepted. There is also two ATMs located inside the campus: BPI, Banco de Oro and Robinson’s Bank.

You don’t need your parents’ company when you enroll. Registration is relatively easy since your subjects are already pre-enlisted.

Tips before your reg:

1) Choose what Nat Sci subject you want to take and have back-up choices in case the nat sci class you want is closed. If you have a bad random number, start ranking your choices. Ex. 1st- ES, 2nd-Physics 3rd-Chem and so on.

2) Once you get your reg form and know your schedule, arrange it in a way that you'll know what your free time is. Know your free time, because you might be able to squeeze your P.E. classes in there. Last year I had a 4 hour break on TTH, I sandwiched my P.E. class during that time so I don't have to waste 4 hours doing nothing. Also, if your class starts at 12pm, you don't want to take a 7:00 am class, it would be finished by 8 am so you'll have 4 hours of free time. But if just live nearby aka in Katipunan, I would not be that bad since you could still go home and perhaps take one long bath before your 12pm class.

3) Same with your nat sci class, have back-up choices as well. Sophomores get to register first, most likely some classes are closed, such as badminton and recreational activities. Have as much as 5 back -up choices, especially if you have a bad random number.

What to Wear

There is relatively no dress code for the campus except for classes under the JGSOM building. For SOM, there is the three-finger rule (straps should be at least 3 fingers thick) and shoes must at least have one of the following: closed, closed toe and ankle strap.

Grading System:

A - 4.00
B+ - 3.5
B - 3.0
C+ - 2.5
C- 2.0
D - 1.0
F – 0

Grade Requirements

In order to stay in ADMU, you need to get the minimum QPI requirement:

Freshman Year – 1.80
Sophomore  Year – 2.00
Junior Year – 2.25
Senior Year 2.5

Some courses have a Rentention QPI. In some courses, there is a minimum QPI in which students have to reach in order to be retained in their respective courses. If students are not able to get the minimum QPI, they are asked to shift into another course. For example, Management Honors and Management Engineering. Some subjects require you to get a get on specific subjects like Math, such as Economics by getting at least a C in Calculus.

If you are not able to attain the minimum QPI, you need to write a letter to convince the administration that you deserve to stay in Ateneo. If your request is approved, you cannot have a failing grade the following semester and the rest of your stay.

Dean’s List

In order to make it into the dean’s list, you need a minimum requirement of 3.35.
3.35 to 3.69 is second honors, 3.70 up is first honors.

Perks of becoming a DL: besides bragging rites, unlimited cuts for the next semester and maximum of 10 books that can be taken out of the lib instead of 5.

And there’s the Honor’s Assembly, a night of appreciation for Honor students (with free dinner). Make sure you sign up if you become a DL, just for the experience.

Registration for Upperclassmen

On your second year, all subjects are pre-enlisted, except for PE, Foreign Language and Sci 10 section.

On your junior and senior year, you will choose your schedules, classes and free elective subjects.

Wow Marian, ang galing. Everything is already listed, and when I say everything, I mean everything. Good job  :)

I don't know if this thread will still be the same, but at least we have a new one. Yay! (Although I am seriously wondering if this entry will be considered as spam. Hahaha.)

Wow, very useful intro not only for the incoming freshmen but to all batches as well. hehe. :)
Suggestion, could you also post something about orgs? hehe... Nagsuggest pa talaga e.
Hmm. Tanong ko lang, diba sa second year pipili rin ng History class? That's what I heard, kaso nakalagay sa post above na all subjects are pre-enlisted except PE, Foreign Language, and Sci 10. I just want to clarify things.

*Hay. Parang magiging formal na ata 'tong thread na 'to. hehe. Di naman sa hindi formal yung dati, kaso parang iba pa rin yung ganun. Ok ang labo. hehe mamaya ma-consider as spam 'to.

I don't know if this thread will still be the same, but at least we have a new one. Yay! (Although I am seriously wondering if this entry will be considered as spam. Hahaha.)

Of course not. Occasional spam is allowed  ;D What's a thread for anyway?

I'm wondering where you guys all went. I created this thread for us, but it did drive you guys away. Oh well.  :(

No, this is not spam  ;) I'm allowing occasional spam  ;D

I got that suggestion about orgs as well. I'm just finalizing the info for it.

Hmm. Tanong ko lang, diba sa second year pipili rin ng History class? That's what I heard, kaso nakalagay sa post above na all subjects are pre-enlisted except PE, Foreign Language, and Sci 10. I just want to clarify things.

I'm not really sure about that. I asked my roommate and her history class was also pre-enlisted.

^The China and European Business Study Tours take place during the summer so technically you're already a sophomore when you decide to join next summer. And from what I know, the European Business Tour did not push through this year.

Regarding History class, during our time which was 2 years ago, pre-enlisted din siya. Either you'll get Hi16 (Asian History) or Hi18 (Western History).

Good job, ice_angel!  ;)
