College Courses.
« on: April 17, 2007, 05:49:36 pm »
READ ME:

This thread will address your concerns regarding which courses to take, why to take them, and advice regarding the course you are about to take. So post them all here: questions such as Nursing ba or Med-tech, Should I take Masscom even if I'm not a sociable person, etc. Again, Please do not create separate threads for all your confusion regarding courses to take, because it will clog up the board. Let's keep School Spirit Neat!

DON'Ts:
1. sTiCkY friggin' cApS
2. txt lingo.  Please people, we are all educated people, about to/going to/has graduated from college.  Teentalk does not have a character limit.
3. SPAMMING.  If the only thing you have to say is a smiley, save it.  Sayang ang space.

Now, they're easy enough to obey, aren't they?   ;)

*The information listed under the mentioned courses below are from the previous "All About Courses" thread.

PSYCHOLOGY

•   A lot of readings. It's a pre-med course so expect a lot of reading, labs, etc.
•   i this course focuses mainly on personal and social behavior, at kung ano ang koneksyon ng emotions na un sa katawan natin.
•   It intertwines the abstract and the concrete. The mind and the body. But then, I hate to be a dualist here.
•   People mistake psychologists for psychics.. and in a way, we are.. because we read people's behaviour like a book.. and we know, to some extent, on what they would do in a certain situation. Aside from that, just by looking at the person, you'd know what kind of personality he/she has. And then its up to you to steer away from doing things they don’t like.
•   Watch out for experiments and such. Good thing? Well, you'll know more about yourself than you thought possible. You''ll get closer to fellow human beings AND you can make your own psychological tests on personality theories.
•   if you love to study human behavior and mental processes then go for that course... one is industrial psychology- u can work 4 business companies as human resource employee, d oder one is clinical psych- u can work in school, hospital etc. its a premed course,, if u want 2 go through medicine...its a good one.  and another one is Educational Psych..
•   its really interesting cause it talks abou human beings which is youre a part of.. and its a very LUCRATIVE job.. kahit san ka magpunta, may trabaho ka.. i mean fields.. (clinical, educational and industrial) and other countries are in demand of psychologist right now that'll last for about 10 years(the demand) and we dont need engineered tools to diagnose, just a piece of paper is enough to know if a patient has brain damage..
•   if youre going to take law, i suggest Behavioral science.. parang psych din sya pero hindi masyadong clinical yung approach.. mas maganda sa law..
•   it's a good course..mas madali kesa nursng
•   Psychology, deals with the behavior of people. EVERYTHING about it, from normal to abnormal, causes and what-have-you. Kung BS Psych, ididiscuss nyo yung mga links between our body processes and what we feel (happiness, love, etc.) Kung AB, more on counseling and guidance.
•   Psychiatry deals mostly with mental disturbances. You know what I mean.
•   You could either go to med school or take up masterals and/or doctorals. Pwede ka rin sa human resource management ng mga companies. Counseling and guidance are also options, pero I think mas area yun ng BA Psych.

MASS COMMUNICATION/COMMUNICATION ARTS

•   well it deals with a whole array of things, it focuses more on the arts (new media: such as graphics making, photography and the like) plus theater arts/performing arts, then you have speech, making your own newspapers/magazines.. everything related to media including Advertising & PR, Journalism, Broadcast Journalism (TV and Radio) Making movies, etc.
•   Journalism = More on News. (Hard and Soft News) of course you'll write feature stories and Editorials as well, but it will center more on News and the How a printing press works.
•   If your not good in english, don't get into this. You will just frustrate yourself, plus you won't produce work that reaches the standard, or exceeds the standard.
•   Has many job opportunities
•   Journalism - kung mahilig kang magsulat ang you want to work in the media, then go for it! mostly you'll be working for news stations or newspapers and magazines, dealing with news and other latest information.
•   Communication Research - tuturuan kang kumuha, mag-interpret, gumawa, mangolekta, magpresent and such and such ng mga surveys, observations, focus group discussions and whatnot.
•   Communication Research - one thing:  think PulseAsia and SWS Survey.
•   CommRes - UPd lang yung meron nito diba? anyway, trabaho.... hmmmm.... compared to other MassCom departments, sabi ng mga prof ko dati -- mas maraming opportunities yung comres grads.  pero usually, dealing with statistics: audience research sa media networks, market research; TV and Radio ratings; PulseAsia and SWS type surveys.....

LAW

*One has to take up a pre-law course before going on to law proper.

•   Law- you have to be really inquisitive, and by this, you will be occupied with a whole lot of reading. Not only memorizing laws, but reading the daily newspaper is needed... plus you need to be good in oral communication, also in English, plus be able to reason out properly and think with a critical mind, and of course you will be exposed to alot of political thought and theories, philosophy and logic. If you don't like reading and memorizing, do not take this course. Besides, before you take law you need a pre law which is usually Legal Management or Political Science.

MARKETING/BUSINESS

•   Marketing is more about researching the target market effective ways of promoting the product and marketing mix while advertsing is promoting the product/service through advertisements you see on televisions, leaflets, billboards etc.
•   According sa natutunan ko sa Entrepreneurship na subject. It requires more communication skills kasi you deal with people here. It is about how you'll be marketing your products to people.

ACCOUNTING

•   you don't need to be a math wizard to take up accountancy. it's math daw requires only the 4 basic operations. yun lang at ayos ka na. but then it's more of memorization and understanding the concepts and laws to be able to pass the course. maganda rin ang course na ito kasi kahit saan ka mag-apply eh maraming job opportunities dahil every company needs an accountant. it is also a good pre-law course kasi if your very fortunate to pass the board and bar exam eh big time ka na dahil CPA lawyer ka. kaya nga i'll be taking up this course as my pre-law. advantage pa nito eh kung tamarin ka na mag law proper atleast malaki yung job opportunities mo.
•   Pwede namang pre-law ang Accounting eh.
•   Analysis daw talaga ang kailangan sa Accountancy.
•   It's challenging but you definitely don't need to be fantastic with Maths. Basic operations lang ang involved dito. Grasping concepts and applying it is a bit hard but you'd get there if you're patient enough. More on analysis talaga ang accounting. You need focus and of course you have to enjoy solving problems and adding up LOTS and LOTS of numbers. Nakakahilo minsan when buong araw mo kaharap accounts of companies with more than 5 digit figures sometimes. I agree that it's really a good pre-law course. Even if you don't pursue law you'd still have very good job opportunities.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

•   Mahihirapan ka lang sa logic circuits. Medyo nakakalito. Tsaka yung pagbuo ng circuits. Kasi akala ko nung una, IT is purely about programming.
•   Gagawa ka ng calculator with the use of LEDs, ICs, etc. Walang programming na involved. Puro circuits lang

INDUSTRIAL ENG'G

•   but the course focuses more on ergonomics, systems and process at OR (operations and research). meron din siyang statistics at konting economics. you will be dealing with the feasible ways of running a organization/enterprise/company, how to maintain the work standards and ethics, taking care of the manpower etc.
•   Ok siya kasi walang board exams =) haha!

LANGUAGES

•   ISE - International Studies, major in European Studies. Basically, pag-aaralan dun yung economic and diplomatic policies and relations ng Europe at Pilipinas, mga international organizations, kinds of governments and political situations in Europe, history ng Europe, international relations, etc. Parang PolSci, except puro tungkol sa Europe and Philippines. May foreign language classes din, pero you just have to choose between Spanish and French.
•   EL - European Languages.  the program focuses on languages.

how about some info about shifting courses?

Well.... I could only help you when it comes to shifting courses in UP since I have done that myself.  I don't think the process is the same for every school.

Here I am again! I am really confused of which course to take up.

Nakakainis kasi, lahat nalang nagtatanong about my course, kung anong trabaho ko. I'm very much afraid na baka someday, I'd be underemployed.
 :(

Ano sa tingin mo ang sure na job opportunities ng AB European Studies ate?  ::)
