i disagree with those doctors... BS bio is a good pre-med course. i'm not yet in college (as u already know ;D ) but we're currently doing a career unit in school right now and im interested in doing something in the medical field (u know i've been undecided for awhile but my passion to take care of other people always takes over -- it always leads me back to thinking of doing something in the medical field) so i've looked into it...

the reasons why most doctors in the philippines wish they could've taken med tech/nursing/pharmacy instead is because its their ticket out of the country. something they could've fallen back on when the demand for nurses in the u.s. and england skyrocketed. after all, its undeniable that its better to be a nurse in the u.s. or england than it is to be a doctor in the philippines. but u're in a very different situation from them. u know u're going back to england no matter what when u graduate. u dont need to be a nurse or a pharmacist to get out. if you're taking bio cuz its really what u want to take and because you have no plans of shifting to another career path, go ahead.

in truth, bs bio is a very good pre-med course. that's true here in the u.s. and im almost pretty positive its the same for england. i wanted to become a doctor before we started our career unit. i wanted to be a geriatrician (they dont get paid much -- trust me, its the experience im after). my mom suggested that bs bio is a good course. it really prepares u for med school.

after we began the career unit, i did look up how to become a doctor. majoring in biology is something they highly recommend for people who are planning to go to med school. unfortunately, i didnt like bio all that much last year so even though i know i'll end up having to take it in college, i'm thinking of majoring in physiology instead. (by the way, right now, my mind is fixed on becoming an anesthesiologist -- and it has nothing to do with uncle joel. i'll tell u more about it later ;D )

lets chat when u have the time, i have more to say ;)

thats just it isnt it? taking those kinda pre med are if youre not sure about medicine. im sure na eh.... so i guess thats why for me, taking those kinda courses would be a waste of time... am i thinking right? hehehe...

and in england, that is just one path to medicine. you can also take a BS first and then go to a graduate medical school like in oxford or cambridge. but mostly students would choose a direct path to medicine. i know, i grew up there.

if ur sure that u rily want 2 b a doctor then y dont u study abroad na nga lang and do medicine straight away? sure ka na nman ehh!

4 me kasi i always wanted 2 be a doctor since i was little (ob-gyne actually), kaya lang many ppl hav been discouraging me.. and all those years of studying? i do hesitate sumtyms... im determined parin nman (and believe me i did not make this decision 4 the money... kahit nman doctor ka, its not guaranteed u'll become rich dba?) and 2 become a doctor is still my goal... pero u never know dba?

and not being sure of continuing into medicine isnt the only reason y i chose PT... students daw who took PT or medtech as their pre-med course found proper medicine easier than those who took bio

u make it sound like you're telling me to wear a pink miniskirt instead of a yellow one, lol! if we could all just study abroad at the drop of a hat, i think we all would... hehehe...

its probably because the training is similar in that its like "this is it na talaga, after this your gonna be working". but with bio, its more like a springboard for higher education, phd or md. and since i really wanna take med, its like, pa easy easy muna ako... why struggle with med tech or pharma? hahaha! no but jokes aside, im really preparing myself for medicine, (nothing else). im making myself sound like a slacker! haha! im not! anyways, im just worried now about getting INTO med school, i really want UST or UP... hay....

the reasons why most doctors in the philippines wish they could've taken med tech/nursing/pharmacy instead is because its their ticket out of the country. something they could've fallen back on when the demand for nurses in the u.s. and england skyrocketed. after all, its undeniable that its better to be a nurse in the u.s. or england than it is to be a doctor in the philippines. but u're in a very different situation from them. u know u're going back to england no matter what when u graduate. u dont need to be a nurse or a pharmacist to get out. if you're taking bio cuz its really what u want to take and because you have no plans of shifting to another career path, go ahead.

youre probably right, although im not sure about going back to london... i was thinking of living in france!! haha... although i do have serious plans to live in france for a year...

after we began the career unit, i did look up how to become a doctor. majoring in biology is something they highly recommend for people who are planning to go to med school. unfortunately, i didnt like bio all that much last year so even though i know i'll end up having to take it in college, i'm thinking of majoring in physiology instead. i think physiology may be a better choice, its better to understand how the body functions that memorize all its parts. or memorize the whole animal kingdom geneology... lol! i didnt really have much choices here in my corner of the world and the philippines, bio was all they offered. i really hope that bio at AUF is gonna prepare me well for the NMAT and medical school. and about becoming an anesthesiologist.... unclue joel will definitely think it has something to do with him! haha! he might try to get you to move with them in virginia! aaaaahh!  :D haha!

sorry i couldnt chat last week pala, i was busy......  ;) hehe... we're going baguio tomorrow till sunday, so next week?? cant wait!!! take care! mwah!

hey doll! i'm in BS Bio in UP...

hmmm, do i regret taking up bio? well, not really... the reason i took up bio kasi is i don't really see myself as a nurse, medtech, pharmacist, or whatever... even if i go to med parang baka tamarin na ako since may fall-back na (although ayoko nga ung fall back na un!)...

tsaka i like bio. i mean, it's fun learning about all these stuff about living things and you know what... as long as a person is enjoying whatever course he/she chose, i think it's fine.

no one can argue with you about the choices you make naman eh...

besides, if all they're telling you is you have no fall back... haller! of course not! it's not true honey, you can be a teacher, ecologist, consultant for big firms in their eco projects (this pays a lot dear!), marine biologist, work for some big company in the US as a researchers or project head... marami rin opportunities, kasi nga flexible ang BIO as a course. yun nga lang, you prolly have to take masters pa to be able to get the really good jobs.

i agree with everything, we think alike, haha...

lots of people say i cant get a job with just bs bio, but i just dont bother to explain anymore. and yeah, you should get a masters or if you really want good jobs, a phd.

btw, r u already in college taking up bs bio or r u still in high school? hehe

incoming bs bio second year

i know the route im taking to medicine, bs bio then medicine. abroad? away from my family and parents? there will plenty of time to be away from them in med school and when i have my own family and move to whatever part of the world i feel like living in. im comfortable where i am. life is short and i dont wanna regret not spending more time with them when i could have. and UP suck! i mean the admissions people. hehe.. they dont wanna except my first year high school grades from london just because iba ang grading system and they dont have the grades they want to see that they can compute. wouldn't even release my UPCAT results without them. and like i said, i dont wanna live away from home right now. (i live in pampanga).

BSmedtech is the advisable pre-med course, its the most hollistic in terms of

preparing for a career in medicine. Db its medical technologists and not technicians

            nasurprise lng ako.....technician,lol....

ei pretty me, alam ko mas mahirap talaga ang med tech. pero kung wala ka naman balak maging med. technician, ano ginagawa mo dun di ba? paghihirapan mo lang ang sarili mo for something you dont even really want....

and kikay girl... i just have a question... do you really wanna be a doctor or a nurse?

doctor.  :)

what do you mean when you say holistic?? (single l btw)

coz going by the dictionary definition of the word "handling or dealing with an entity in its entirety or wholeness rather than with emphasis on its parts or various aspects"

which in the medical field means "considering all factors when treating illness: taking into account all of somebody's physical, mental, and social conditions in the treatment of illness", it doesnt really do any of that. it doesnt even really "treat" anything as it does "diagnose".

so yeah, i just wanted to clarify, since you dont mean what the word means, what do you mean? hehehe...

before i chose my course i asked several doctors what they suggest i take up as a pre-med

course, and they all said medtech, and thats why i took it up,professional advyc is ol i hav....it's

either u guys take it or leave it.....by hoListic i meant that it prepares u entirely before going

to medicine (reflect) ;)......u chose bs bio coz thats what you luv and i undrstand y u have to

defend ur choice, just dont be hostile s opinions.....

^ what she prolly meant is that medtech people kasi take subjects in pre-med that are already offered in med. so parang magiging repeat lang like ana&phisio, para, etc... not to mention lab work.

but i think it's the same for any other course naman. PT rin has those subjects, they even have NEURO. bio rin has ana, physio, para, micro, biochem, etc.

at the end of the day, wala naman sa pre-med course un eh. nasa tao pa rin un! even if she took the "best-est" (i know there's no such word, but assuming there is) premed course (which of course, everyone can argue is their course), kung pagdating sa med eh tatamad-tamad at papatay-patay lang. wala ding manyayari.  :)
