i'm also taking up a premed course for medicine (of course).. mine is bs medtech..
my tita who is currently a doctor told me that if i'm going to take a premed course,  choose medtech.. so i did likewise... she took bs biology during her premed but she told me when she's already in medschool, her classmates who took up medtech were ahead of them because there are certain subjects that are more prior to med kaya they were more advance. my blockmates as well are taking up medtech as their premed course because it's also recommended by their parents who are doctors as well. so un,, but i'm not against bs biology, it's just that, it's really hard to find a job when you took up bio and then you shifted minds of not entering medschool anymore.. well you might end up being a teacher but you still have to take another subjects for teaching... but if you choose medtech, at least you just have to pass the board and you have the job agad... kaya my family is encouraging me to take up medtech than bs biology...
i'm not saying that you must regret taking up bs biology, well what matters most is the students... dba?? when you're already in medschool, things are just the same right? you are taking the same path but it's just you entered different paths from your destination.. just continue your course, wg ka na magshift.. gudluck sis..

they keep telling me if i change my mind about medicine at least im a nurse, at least im this that. but thats just it, i dont wanna be a nurse, or any of that. i want to be a doctor, im not doing it for the money so why do i need a fall back job?

the other thing about them being advanced, thats what my doctor said, but you're gonna get there anyway right? why bother repeating stuff?

and kikay girl... i just have a question... do you really wanna be a doctor or a nurse?

the thing with me is, why take those courses if you dont plan on being a medical technician or a nurse or a pharmacist in the first place? its not just the destination thats important, its the journey, so why waste your time training to be one thing if you plan on becoming something else? plus, if you're gonna take up those subjects anyway, why do them again, its just a waste of time repeating them. isnt it? i dont know, someone enlighten me... hehe...

its the same as taking up bs biology, dear. do you also plan to be a biologist someday, somehow?
fyi, medical technicians are people who hasnt pass the boards yet, so yeah thats different with medical technologists.

thats why its called pre-med. it prepares you for a broader science. :)

"a biologist", haha... just doing research? i dont think so... bs biology is preparation for something more, like a phd or md. but bs med tech etc, thats it...

anyway, i emailed oxford once and asked about the best pre-med courses etc. they said... uh wait, post ko nalang...

A degree in pharmacy or medical technology would be considered by the Selection committee to be too vocational for the course at Oxford and so that would not strengthen your application, but in fact make you ineligible.  The course has a very strong academic bias, in both science and clinical training.

thats their point, basically they said "you're trained to be something already, its like shifting careers, are you really passionate about what your doing??? or just after the money?"

because pharmacy and medical technology has a somewhat complete science whatever you call it and internship. :) kaya siguro bias. pero there's the point na nga eh, you did it so you will understand somehow how hard sciences are sa medicine school. haha :)

parang napaka-unprofessional naman ng tanong na are you just after the money. parang personal na issue yun.

i dont think its an unprofessional question at all. its a practical question. why do most people even think about getting in the health professions? you are almost guaranteed financial stability. why are most people taking nursing? ask the 1,500 freshman at our school, you will get a handful or less who say they actually want to care for people. and a lot of those taking that kind of course as a pre med use it as a fall back, just in case they decide not to follow through with medicine, they have at least secured a paying job. its practical, sure, wheres the harm in playing it safe? but i guess for me i just really wanna become a doctor, no side tracking or fall backs. but thats just me.

so anyway, get back to the point. anyone here also taking up pre med or in med school who can share their experience?

im gonna be taking BS physical therapy this coming school year
kasi if i took bs bio, then if ever i suddenly decided not 2 continue into medicine, then ther arent really many job oppurtunities.. whereas with PT, meron na akong career as a therapist

and wen i went 2 the UST hospital, meron dun mga resident docs.. and they said the best daw as a pre-med course are med tech and PT

sa england they straight away take up medicine kasi, and that course is for 7years... pero sa phil and sa US, u hav 2 take a pre-med course first b4 medicine

i was considering going 2 malaysia (where medicine is only 4 5years) or singapore and do medicine straight away.. pero wut if i suddenly change my mind dba?

i think its okay, just make sure the curriculum has all the required subjects. i guess it will really help you with the doctor-patient relational aspect which is important because what good would you be as a doctor if your patient has a hard time even trusting you? and well, it will help with all the relationships you will encounter being a doctor.

thats the up side of taking psychology, the only reservation i have though, is does it really prepare you for the scientific knowledge/understanding that medicine entails or the rigorous studying?

thats just it isnt it? taking those kinda pre med are if youre not sure about medicine. im sure na eh.... so i guess thats why for me, taking those kinda courses would be a waste of time... am i thinking right? hehehe...

and in england, that is just one path to medicine. you can also take a BS first and then go to a graduate medical school like in oxford or cambridge. but mostly students would choose a direct path to medicine. i know, i grew up there.
