Chick lit fans were in for a triple treat as Summit Books held a book signing event on October 6 at Pandayan Bookshop, Malolos. Readers of She's Dating The Gangster, Operation: Break The Casanova’s Heart, and Three Words, Eight Letters, Say It and I'm Yours had the chance to meet and have their copies signed by no less than the respective authors themselves: Bianca Bernardino, Aly Almario (a.k.a. Alyloony) and Jade Margarette Pitogo (a.k.a. GirlInLove).
We have seen homegrown Filipino talents getting discovered on YouTube, but the Summit Princesses were on a different platform. Before making it to the roster of Summit Books titles and becoming national best-sellers, the Pop Fiction books gained popularity in the online community. In fact, She's Dating The Gangster was originally posted on Candymag.com's TeenTalk while OpTeration: Break The Casanova's Heart and Three Words, Eight Letters, Say It and I'm Yours were stories from social writing site Wattpad.
Ear-splitting screams and cheers from the fans who were present at the book signing never faltered! They also enjoyed a mini quiz bee about the books and authors and the winners took home freebies including Candy magazines from Summit Media and Pandayan Bookshop.
Candy got up close and personal with the authors and here are the fun facts they shared with us:
How old are you?
Aly: Turning 22 this month
How did you start writing and what was your inspiration?
Bianca: Five years ago, I posted She's Dating The Gangster on TeenTalk. The idea came from conversations with my friends and was based not just on my personal experiences but also on the lives other people as well.
Aly: Writing has been my passion ever since. I've always had these stories in my head and one day I just thought, why not write and post them online so others can read my works? The stories were mainly inspired by my love for anime and koreanovelas.
Jade: I'm really a hopeless romantic. I always ask myself, "what if...?" The story is actually my way of exploring possibilities especially when it comes to love. When I first posted it on Wattpad, nobody read it. I don't know how, but one day it just became a hit.
How did writing the stories changed your life? What is your favorite part of your journey as a writer?
Bianca: To be honest, I didn't expect that after five years, She's Dating The Gangster would be a book. What more that people will actually buy copies and read it? I'm just so thankful for all the love and support of the readers.
Aly: Since the publication of Operation: Break The Casanova’s Heart, there are times when I don't know what's happening anymore! I mean, it all started with me posting it online, now it's a book and people have read it. In school, I've never stood out academically and it's a good feeling to finally realize that there's something I am good at.
Jade: This whole journey is so overwhelming, especially the love and appreciation from the readers. We didn't even expect that people would line up and wait for hours just to meet us and have their books signed. Somehow, it's a confidence-booster knowing that your readers appreciate the story and that people begin to recognize you.
If you weren't a writer, what would you be?
Bianca: A teacher. I would go back to being a guidance counselor.
Aly: Still a barista. Aside from my passion for writing, I love coffee!
Jade: Artista! [laughs] No but seriously, I will be a lawyer. I have made plans of pursuing Law after graduation.
What should your readers expect from you in the coming months?
Bianca: She's Dating The Gangster, Too
Aly: More stories!
Jade: There's a second part of Three Words, Eight Letters.
When asked about their message for their readers, Bianca, Aly and Jade had the same thing to say: Thank you very much for your love and support!
