How to Take Better Instagram Photos + 3 People You Should Follow
We asked three Instagram users their secrets to taking the perfect shot!

Instagram has been an effective tool to tell the world what you last ate, #OOTDs, and even the once-in-a-while shameless #selfies via photos (and now, videos!). But more than that, Instagram can also be a platform to show off your creative prowess. Here's how:

  1. Compose your photo: As much as you want to "capture the moment," adding a few props won't hurt—perhaps it will even help. Also, don't be a lazy Instagrammer. Get up and change perspectives to get the perfect angle.
  2. There's more to filters than Mayfair: keep people guessing by avoiding the typical filters available on Instagram. Head on over to the apps store and check out different photo-editing apps. From collage makers to simple lighting changes – you don’t know how much difference a great app can make.
  3. Natural light is the best kind: It is always a good idea to shoot near a window and during the golden hour. Also, terrible fluorescent lighting is never nice.
  4. Be shameless: Not everyone understands the art of Instagram. When people stare at you with their judgmental eyes as you try to perfectly compose your dish, do not be wary, it will all be worth it once you post it online and get the appreciation that you deserve.

Check out the tips from some of our favorite Instagram users below.

  • What camera do you use for your Instagram shots?
Almost all of the photos on my IG feed are taken with my iPhone 4s except when I travel, cover special events, or shoot stuff for work, where I use a dSLR (Canon 7D). But most of the time (which is like ALL THE TIME!), I just depend on my iPhone 4s. The iPhone is my new digital camera!
  • What are your top 3 photo editing apps?
Just 3? Oh my. I have a lot of fave photo editing apps that I use depending on my mood that day or with the photo I've just taken. In no particular order, it's PicTapGo, Afterlight, and it's a toss between VSCOcam and Picfx. Okay, that was 4 fave photo editing apps :)
  • What is your favorite Instagram filter?
It really depends on the photo but I really love Mayfair (they really work well with nature/beach/sunset photos) and the classic black and white/blueish gray Willow.
  • Fill in the blank: An Instagrammer must-have _____________.
An Instagrammer must have no hesitations. BE IN THE MOMENT. If something catches your eye, shoot it. Get creative with your shots and shoot from different perspectives. Also, I love shooting with natural light. Don't (over) think and just shoot. If you're waiting for that perfect moment, it might never happen. Sometimes the best photos are the candid and spontaneous ones :)
