James Morrison, who was the biggest-selling British male solo artist then at only 21, came into the music scene with his first record, Undiscovered in 2006. One of his most popular tunes off this album was "You Give Me Something."

Following the success of his debut album, he came out with Songs For You, Truths For Me. And that's exactly how we'd describe his music: truthful, honest. When asked about keeping things private despite being so open and honest in his songs, he says, "I'm only honest about universal things." He thinks that there are still a lot of things that he keeps to himself, but his goal is to write songs that people can relate to. "I think my responsibility that I put on myself as an artist is to try and write songs for people who can't express themselves," he shares. Taking his dad's advice to keep a little something for himself, he says, "I try to be private in my personal life, but through my songs I try and be as honest as I can be without giving too much away."

In Songs For You, Truths For Me, he collaborated with Nelly Furtado and came out with the worldwide hit, "Broken Strings."

His third and latest record, The Awakening, is what he feels is his first proper album. And like his previous songs, he still writes about truths. He shares, "The best songs I've written have come from where I've been in a place, where, maybe it's not where you want to be but you're hoping for something better."  James lost his father while making the record and admits that he finds it much easier to write songs when there are problems. He continues, "All my favorite songs are songs that have a yearning or heartache in them of some kind." But that's not to say he sits around writing songs about being miserable. Even if he's in a bad place, he will always try to have a lyric or feeling that's positive. He says, "They've got to have some kind of positive outward wave of being." And that's precisely what his music conveys.

I watch James Morrison's new music video, "Up". Because it makes me sad about my personal experiences. It should be said and done.
