From online trends to viral videos, so much has happened this 2016 that we will surely never forget. Our generation, with the help of social media, has had so much fun with endlessly discovering random #challenges and share-worthy memes, and we can't wait for what is in store for us next year! Here are some of the most viral trends that will make you go "that's definitely 2016's highlight!"

  1. Cot Dammit Elizabeth

Who can ever forget Elizabeth and her boyfriend who became famous because the latter has been documenting his girlfriend's love for food (more than anything else) and struggle to exercise.

  1. Oil or White Paint?

If a picture can paint a thousand words, then we don't know what to make of this confusing photo. This photo got everyone on the internet making more than a double take because the legs in the pic look unusually shiny, but are they, really?

  1. Boomerang

Instagram's standalone app, Boomerang, was launched in 2015 but it was this year that it gained popularity. From celebs to regular Instagram users, this feature is definitely well-enjoyed by many.

  1. #MarcosNotAHero

The surprise burial of former president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani created quite a stir, which encouraged a lot of people, especially millennials, to take it to the streets (and sites) and make their voices heard.

  1. Papaw and his burgers

A cute but sad photo of a grandpa eating a burger made waves on Twitter and Facebook. In the post by his granddaughter, she said that Papaw made 12 burgers for all of his six grandkids but she was the only one who went. Papaw's story became so famous to the point that when one of his grandkids announced a burger cookout, thousands of people showed up!

  1. Damn, Daniel!

The boys of Damn, Daniel could possibly be the last two successful breakout stars of Vine before it closed down (RIP). After their Vine videos went viral, the two boys got so famous that Ellen DeGeneres invited them to her show and even got them to cover the MTV Movie Awards 2016!

  1. Mannequin Challenge

If there is one word to describe our internet-savvy generation, it is this: random. Sometimes, there is no other way to understand how teens from all over the world think of ideas as crazy and as fun as the mannequin challenge than to just go with it and laugh along the way!

  1. Water Bottle Flipping

Out of all the talents showcased at this high school's talent show, a teen guy flipping a water bottle was the one that got the crowd all riled up! And we can't blame them—it was flipping amazing! Since then, a lot of people (including grandmas) have been doing their own versions of the challenge.

  1. Running Man Challenge

Who would have thought that an old song and a new quirky dance move can get the whole world dancing? This is all thanks to two young kids who started the whole phenomenon and two student athletes who made it super popular!

  1. Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen

This video doesn't make sense at all, but then again, none of most of the viral videos this year do. But it's a total earworm and the guy's antics are funny.
