The University of the Philippines ranked 367th in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, an annual list of the best universities around the globe. It climbed seven spots from its previous rank of 374.

The state university maintained its position as the highest-ranking Philippine university in the list. The rankings also highlighted its archaeology program, which ranked 101-150 in the world.

Three other Philippine universities made it to the annual rankings.

Ateneo de Manila University ranked in the 551-600 group, slightly dropping from its previous rank of 501-550 last year. Its English Language and Literature program ranked 201-250 in the world.

De La Salle University maintained its 701-750 rank from the year before. QS also ranked its Linguistics program at 151-200.

The University of Santo Tomas dropped to the 801-1000 rank after placing in the 701+ rank last year. However, it is the only Philippine university to be given a star rating by QS. It received four out of five QS Stars, recognized for its employability, facilities, social responsibility and inclusiveness.

With four universities in the list, the Philippines is the fourth most represented Southeast Asian country in the QS rankings. Both Indonesia and Malaysia lead with nine universities in each, while Thailand has eight entries on the list.

Singapore has one less entry in the list than the Philippines, but it has the highest-ranking Asian university: the Nanyang Technological University-Singapore, which placed 11th in the global list. Brunei completes Southeast Asia's 34 entries with one university in the rankings.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology led the annual rankings for the sixth year in a row, with QS stating that the school "remains light years ahead of the competition." Four other US-based universities, four British universities, and one Swiss university complete this year's top 10.

Quacquarelli Symonds is a British company specializing in education and career solutions. This year's World University Rankings is its 14th annual listing of the world's best universities, where it ranked 959 universities across 84 countries.
