Passion and Poetry

For me, expression is poetry—it’s my passion; my means to survive in this world of massive emotional chaos. I’ve always been more comfortable expressing myself through random lines than narratives. I love words that sort-of “beat around the bush”—the overstated ones. Say for example, “Re-acquaint my knees with the carpet” instead of “Bring me to my knees” or “Humble me down” (Taken from Brooke Fraser’s song, “Lifeline”) What I love about poetry is the mystery—it doesn’t give all of the emotions away, only hints are revealed. It’s like a puzzle we solve, word by word, line by line.

The first poem I ever wrote was entitled “The Bear.” That was when I did inventive spelling. I remember spelling Back (meaning my back) as bache, because I could not accept that two different words (come back and my back) can be spelled exactly the same. Haha!

Anyway, just like dance and music, poetry possesses rhyt hm. The difference is that in dance and music, there is synchronization between parties. These are the steps, these are the keys/chords. While in poetry, it takes on a more personal level, only you can understand how you think and how you interpret a certain text. We feel it the way we want to and that’s the beauty. :)

Let me share with you a couple of poems I wrote over the years…

This one I wrote when I was in 6th grade.
