We’ve Come a Long Way

I finally got to see my buds for just about the first time this summer last Saturday, May ninth, at my best friend Steffi’s sixteenth birthday. Most of them have been taking classes together all summer, and I’ve been in another world for the past month and a half. (I’d wanted to take a break from seeing my same schoolmates’ faces everyday! Haha! But don’t tell them that.)

Anyway, it was also kind of refreshing to see them again after so long a while. I didn’t even realize how much I really missed them until I got to the kantunan beside our school and met up with the girls there. I was like, wow, have I really lived that long without seeing these people?

Coming Out

My mother thinks that debuts are overrated—from the frilly dress, to the expansive list of everything eighteen, to birthday greetings and wishes, to color schemes, and to the cotillion that comes with every coming-of-age event. I, on the other hand, am the complete opposite. I love debuts and would have gladly thrown myself one, if not for the raised eyebrow of my mother.

I spent my last weekend attending not one, but two debuts of my two closest high school friends. I try to attend every debut as possible (to the dismay of my dad), especially the ones thrown by my high school friends. I rarely get to talk to any of them because we study in different colleges and time does not seem to permit any of us with some girl bonding. So when opportunity knocks, I say Carpe Diem!

I was ecstatic because Otts, one of the debutantes, got me to host her debut alongside her older sister, Nicky. If there’s one thing I really love doing, it’s hosting a party. So when I was tapped to host, I was completely excited and jumped right into the idea! It was a wonderful night filled with so many surprises. I met new people and got reunited with some old ones. My high school friends changed so much over the year and I was extremely glad that I was able to share a few laughs and exchange stories again, just like old times.
