Once I Was A Teacher

Hi there! How are things going for you so far? Have you been keeping up to your resolutions? In four days, January will finally be over and we have only two months left for school. But before I get drowned in what maybe hopeful thoughts about sunny days and cool pools, allow me to contemplate over the endless amount of homework that I’ve been having since school started. One particular example was my experience last January 23.
Last Saturday, my block mates and I went to Lubao, Pampanga as part of our NSTP subject. We were tasked to teach kids of ages 4-8 years old about basic catechism. The trip was very long and we were already very eager to meet the kids. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by about 40-50 children who were divided between the different blocks that came to the trip. We were assigned to mentor nine children who were all very shy at first.
Our assigned topic was about the Birth of Jesus Christ, a prayer, and some songs. To the best of our abilities, we discussed everything that we know about the topics that were assigned to us and shared the moral lessons we could draw out of the story. We taught them how to pray and another prayer they could say every time they want to. We also taught them a song, which sings about how much Christ loves us.
Little by little, the little children began to warm up to us and we felt that they were enjoying the time they were spending with us. By the time we played games with them, we were laughing so hard that thinking about leaving is even harder.
My trip was very fun, but it also gave me new things to think about for the rest of my life. It taught me a lot about being patient and flexible. Belonging to a big family, the lessons I have learned about being with kids became useful. Also, it taught me how to give more value to my education while some children don’t even get to go to schools because of poverty. This experience is very eye-opening and is definitely something that I will never forget.
