The Beginning of the End

November 28, 2008 at 10:17 am | by rubie | In Etcetera | 1 Comment

School’s been really hectic lately, but I wouldn’t miss my last time to blog here as Candy Council of Cool 8!

We all don’t want this to be sappy and cheesy but somehow, I think we wouldn’t be able to avoid it. So forgive me if I will get a little carried away. I can’t even put into words how fulfilled and happy I am to be a part of the Candy family. Before, I would be one of those ecstatic teenagers being the first to buy in the magazine stand, dreaming of being in the magazine and now it’s been like a blissful dream come true. Seeing my name published inside the magazine, being recognized by my friends and family is just the cherry on top of my favorite vanilla ice cream.

This experience has taught me my own three R’s:

  1. Writing. Not exactly an “R” but you know how it goes. :) I am not saying that I am a master of ostentatious words because I am not. The way I write is through writing from the heart. Whatever I have given for the Candy magazine is 100% me and forever an embodiment of what I see around me. Candy has taught me that I don’t need to be the perfect writer, I am perfect in my imperfections because I write from somewhere true.
  2. Respect. Inside the halls of our conference room during meeting, we are family. But not because we have fun we get to do anything we want; that’s not exactly the case. As a family, we help each other and learn to view others’ opinions and respect them. We become mature in more ways than we even realize.
  3. Responsibility. Even before I became COC8, I have always been responsible with everything that I do but Candy has taught me about being responsible in the real world. Yes, I have duties in school and school work to fulfill but it’s not how the real world will manifest. Candy showed me that deadlines have to be met and excuses are not an option. Being responsible will help me succeed in life.

Hello there, Project Runway

I am pretty sure that if you’re a Candy girl, you’re well aware of the show Project Runway that is hosted by Heidi Klum where different fashion designers compete for a chance to show their collection during Fashion week.

Guess what? There’s our own version of Project Runway; Project Runway Philippines. The plot is pretty much the same and the competition is adapted well from the original show. But that’s not the main topic of my blog. You see, the Philippine Fashion Week Spring 09 started last Wednesday and the finale of Project Runway so happened to be part of fashion week too. And the final three designers shall show their collection with all the top designers there. But how can they show their collection without casting their models?

That’s where I come in! I got casted as one of the finale models in the show. My designer is Veejay. The show airs every Wednesday, 10 pm in ETC channel 16 if you’re a skycable subscriber. The finale will show on October 29, 2008 so you can catch me there!

I can’t exactly describe the experience because it was so surreal. I had so much fun and I just loved the clothes. Although, I was a bit scared because I had heels that could probably kill someone, or probably kill me because I might trip down the runway and get humiliated to death. :p But luckily I didn’t trip! :)

Last Thursday, October 23, 2008, I walked the runway of the finale episode of Project Runway, Philippines in the halls of SMX Complex. It is yet again another memorable experience for me! I guess what I found great about that is the fact that I really got to interact with the designer and fellow models, which is a bond I will forever remember. Everyone who is anyone in the fashion industry was practically there! I am not allowed to say so much spoilers as of the moment because the show has not been aired but I’m pretty sure you can imagine it yourself. It was kind of easy to have a blank face and give a fierce walk, I remember doing that for fun ever since I was a kid because I would mimic models on TV. The fact that I am actually the one on TV is making me laugh so much! Oh well, time is unpredictable. You never know what the future awaits! :)

I really do enjoy what I’m doing. Since it’s semestral break, I am making sure to make the most out of it and having this experience makes my sembreak the best one yet! :)

Happily walking down the runway,
Rubie

When You Start to Give Back

I belong to the organization, Association of Biology Majors in my school, the University of the Philippines. Sounds geeky right? But there is definitely more to the nerd-ish name. Just like nay other organization in UP, it yearns to mold students into holistic individuals. And what I love the most about this organization is the fact that we live to help and serve others. Last Saturday, September 20, 2008, we had our annual medical mission at Taguig City.

It was definitely an experience to remember.

Everyone went to the vicinity at around 8 am but since a few of us had exams in the morning, we just followed at around 9 am. It was so funny because the rest of us who followed got super lost. We didn’t have a hard time to reach the area because I knew it pretty well but finding the side streets and the specific place was hard. Haha! So we got lost for around 30 minutes only to find that we’ve passed a gazillion times St. Michael’s Church, the church we were looking for!

Don’t Be Afraid To Open Up

I don’t wish to frighten you or “eww” you out but I just found this anecdote in my life to be fairly unforgettable.

P.S.: This blog is not for the faint hearted.

Last week was sort of dissection week for me, a Biology major. I was so excited to be opening up frogs again because what I did back in second year high school was no fun at all. We were all in groups that I wasn’t even able to get some one-on-one with the frog. Thankfully, when I got into college, we work by pairs and thus, I get some quality time with my frog. Oh, I meant toad. I forgot to mention that everyone in Biology is using toads because of the reality that frogs are now endangered species. Well anyway, let me just say that toads weren’t the last dissection we’ll ever do. I heard we’ll do cats and sharks too. :)

The first laboratory activity we did was to “skin” the frog because we were in the process of studying the musculatory system.

This is the before shot.
