Day in the Life of Candy

For many, summer vacation is generally a time to cherish some degree of freedom that comes with the release from school work and academics into a couple of months of travel and adventure. Well, that goes for most of you. Summer classes loom overhead for some college students, giving them only a brief taste of the summer sun before delving back into a pool of books and tests and such.

But there are many, too, that are caught in some sort of limbo between the aforementioned freedom and not-so-freedom of summer. Many high school seniors who have just graduated are probably living it out right this moment, driven by the notion that this might just be their last actual summer before college begins. But in the midst of summer, there is still the inescapable question that continues to press on their subconscious: “What am I going to do with my life?”

Personally, that was me during summer last year, intimated by the prospect of college. Some people are pretty certain of what they were about to get into. Lucky them. But for the many that are unsure and have yet to decide, the summer then must make room for reflection and ruminations. Nonetheless, this whole process doesn’t have to be so incredibly serious. In fact, looking for possible signs that may reveal your inclinations in life may be a summer adventure in itself. So how does one start this adventure?

I stumbeld upon this interesting website that generates the possible things you can do with your life. The items are completely random and quite hilarious especially when you try imagining yourself doing it. But there are some times too that you actually consider the option. Here are some of them:

This sounds pretty exciting.

Hmmm interesting!

Oh please no. Haha!

Try and visit the website and see what you’ll end up with. You might end up surprising yourself. :)

Sit down, sit down because the books are rockin’ the boat.

Last Sunday my family and I made the journey all the way to South Harbor’s Pier 15 in Manila where the Logos Hope was docked and ready to board. A non-profit organization, the ship sails around the world carrying thousands of books sold at remarkably cheap and reasonable prices.

A self-proclaimed bookworm, I was in paradise. Rows and rows of great titles of various literary genres (from fiction, to cookbooks, to young adult and all the way to textbooks and such) welcomed everyone who ventured on board. I literally felt like a kid in a candy store—super giddy and ready to grab everything in sight. :)

For all you sporty girls out there, a whole new fun run is on its way and you’ll be sure to make a run for it… a run for your life that is!

The undead are out to conquer the world and though it may have started with vampires, now zombies are all the rage!

Now I’m well aware that the possibility of a zombie apocalypse may still be pretty far off (if not totally impossible) but the adrenaline junky in me begs to differ. So what does a girl have to do to get some brain-eating action up in here?

Not much it turns out.

Outbreak Manila is a zombie-infested 5k fun run with the added thrill of an obstacle course. The mission: get out alive! I’ve read through the rules and it sounds pretty exciting. As a runner, you begin the race with three orange flags which represent your lives. Through the course, all kinds of zombies (crawlers, walkers, runners, etc.) will try their best to get those flags and “eat your brains.”

Of course, no actual physical contact can be made between the zombie and the runner (as stated in their rules) so you don’t have to worry about it actually being harmful. And if you want to go over to the other side, you can join as a zombie instead! Personally, my younger brother and I CANNOT wait for this.

Moreover, they actually encourage you to dress up and be in costume. So kick start your summer by making a run for it. Race against the clock, challenging obstacles and flesh-eating zombies, and bag some prizes and zombie-fighting experience along the way!

The first leg of Outbreak Manila will be on April 14 at Nuvali Sta. Rosa. You can read more about it on their website or like their Facebook page.

I think I just got a crush and “I know this crush ain’t going awaaaaay!”

Last Friday, Bench welcomed their newest endorser to add to their superstar line-up. With his charm, his guy-next-door image, and that smile, David Archuleta is definitely the perfect endorser. The launch, which was held at the Trinoma Activity Center, featured a fabulous fashion show, a mini-concert where David serenaded the crowd, and, of course, a mall-full of screaming fans.

Confetti!

That smile!

But I have to say that the highlight of that entire experience was getting to meet the one and only Ben Chan, the man responsible for the success that is Bench. I was seated right behind him and I was practically squealing with excitement.

Me with THE Ben Chan

Overall, it was definitely a great launch. With Bench stepping up their image with fresh-faced superstars, no doubt they’ll remain a big name in the retail industry for quite a while.

Before we formally bid goodbye to the annual week of hearts, I’d just like to share my personal experience of Valentine’s. I have to admit I was never a big fan of Valentine’s. For most of my life, I considered it to be just another day while, for the majority, it has become this cultural phenomenon so much so that it’s celebrated like a holiday.

February 14 was a crucial day not because of the obvious reasons but because it was the day of my long exam for Math and for the past few weeks I committed myself to this exhausting subject that I forced myself to fall in love with it. Unfortunately, it refuses to love me back. Haha!

So you can imagine the feeling of dread as I set out on Valentine’s Day, my head throbbing with equations and formula as I walked past people carrying bouquets and chocolate and heart-shaped balloons while I had in my hands my clunky calculus book and a scientific calculator. I was so focused and so intent on this one exam that I was immediately caught off-guard by the surprise that awaited me.

To cut the story short, I received a red rose from one of my best friends in the world and received two more roses and a cookie shaped like a Pokemon Ball (CUTEST EVER!!!) from another dear friend. I remember a blockmate of mine who defines kilig as “That smile you cannot wipe off of your face, no matter how hard you try.” And for the rest the day, I had this goofy smile on my face because though Math refused to be my Valentine, things still added up and made sense in the end.

But then this smile on my face I’ve had many times on many days for many different reasons from many different people. So it seems to me that Valentine’s really is just like any other day because on any given day, there is always that chance, that opportunity, at a smile. Don’t miss out on it! :)
