The Council of Cool 10 girls share with you what’s making us smile this month.

Rereading the Twilight saga is awesome. I’m not a big Twilight fan, but Stephenie Meyer’s articulation is so amazing, you can’t help but get drawn into the characters. I like that the books are descriptive, creative, and absolutely mind-blowing. I just wish that the coming movie adaptations would live up to Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. The Twilight and the New Moon movies are kind of a let-down. —Alekx

Jazmin’s got her yogurt fix: You Go Gurt?, Red Mango, Yogurt Froz, Tutti Frutti, and Cali Berry. New places to try out: Golden Spoon and The White Hat—both located at the Shangri-La Mall. Hope this helps your cravings! Or did it just make you crave more? Whoops! On a magic carpet with yogurt on a waffle cone. —Jazmin

I’m loving the bum life! Though I kinda miss doing a lot of things, I am happy because I am finally saying goodbye to the stress and workload of college! :) Graduation day is fast approaching and I am very excited about it. :) —Jesselle

Oreo Doughnut from Krispy Kreme. Chocolate Doughnut. Rich, cream frosting. Oreo bits with a crunch. Only one word can describe this deliciously sinful piece of dessert: Heaven. With every bite I take, I feel all my sorrows and worries just melt away and I seem to forget what I was stressing about in the first place. Even though it’s already summertime and I’m getting ready to put my summer diet into action, I think it’s worth the extra poundage if this delicious Oreo doughnut is the one thing that makes me a little less harried and a little bit happier. Don’t mind the calories, a good doughnut doesn’t come around often. —Keisha

After all those months of grueling schoolwork, I decided to celebrate my (temporary) freedom by reuniting with books. It feels good to be able to sit down with a good book at hand and have time to spare without worrying about grades. After 3 months without fiction, I’m finally reading again and I decided to start with Sixteen, edited by Megan McCafferty. —Leslie

My Journalism 102 professor had organized a press conference with Presidential candidate Nicanor Perlas for our class, and we were all given the chance to ask questions about his plans for the country. I was impressed not only by his confidence and answers, but also by his willingness to spend time obliging our questions despite his hectic schedule, and the fact that a lot of politicians wouldn’t bother going to small press cons like ours. I’ll be a first-time voter this May, and though I’m not yet sure about whom I’ll be rooting for, encounters like this help a lot in making my decision. I’m really hoping all the voters out there would pick our leaders responsibly! —Mars

Since I’m out of books to read, I make sure that I watch at least one FRIENDS episode every night. It’s become so habitual that my bedtime gets pushed till about 1 AM, which does not make my mother happy. FRIENDS makes me happy. It preserves my sanity. —Vicky

Among hundreds of applicants, we emerge as eight, cool, Candy Girls set to make our marks in Candy history. Take a peek into our lives beneath all the published articles, challenging deadlines, and sweet triumphs that come with being a true-blue Candy Girl.

Introducing the Council of Cool 10

Alekxandra “ALEKX” Toyhacao
17 years old
First year, AB Literature and Literacy, St. Scholastica’s College
Describe yourself in five words:
sweet, sour, and totally tangy
What superpower would you like to have?
The ability to control nature. I would love to help Mother Nature and make flowers bloom out of thin air. Invisibility, ability to control time, and mind-reading sounds fantastic, too!
If you were candy, what would you be?
Definitely Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans! Jellybeans for all the Muggles. The challenge in getting to know me is that I am unpredictable (in a good way) and an irony of a variety of things.

Maria Criselda “CRE” Marin
17 years old
First year, BA Organizational Communication, UP Manila
What superpower would you like to have?
I’d take a page from Wolverine’s book and have the power to heal instantaneously and completely! The baddies won’t know what hit ‘em.
What is the best advice you have been given?
“Feel the fear, and do it anyway.”
If you were candy, what would you be?
A pack of Razzles! It’s candy that turns into gum. How can you go wrong with that?

Jazmin Yvette “JAZ” Reyes
17 years old
Fourth year, High School
Describe yourself in five words:
Not the Jasmine from Aladdin.
What superpower would you like to have?
To have the ability to create candy and share it to the entire world.
If you were candy, what would you be?
A caramel-filled milk chocolate coated mint truffle with a layered waffle crisp in the middle, downed with a whole lot of caramel and love. (whew!)

Jesselou “JESSELLE” Villegas
19 years old
Fourth year, BS Communications Major in Media Production, Assumption College
The three things you can’t live without:
Cellphone (I feel so disconnected with my family and friends when I forget to bring it with me), laptop (it’s my favorite gadget and it is where I do my homework for school, writing assignments for Candy and my thesis anytime, anywhere), and iPod (I love music! My iPod is my life soundtrack. It contains all my favorite songs and never fails to keep me entertained. I also listen to music whenever I experience writer’s block; it helps me think better).
What superpower would you like to have?
I want the power to see the future like Alice Cullen! It’s so cool!
What is the best advice you have been given?
“Don’t let others put you down,” an advice given to me by my godmother in her birthday message to me 2 years ago. Her advice helped me to believe in myself and do my best in everything I do.

Keisha Marie “KEISHA” Go
17 years old
Fourth year, High School
What superpower would you like to have?
If given the chance, I want to have the power to JUMP to different places—like Hayden Christensen in the movie Jumper—so that I can finally fulfill my number one dream: TO TRAVEL ALL OVER THE WORLD without any worries :D
What is the best advice you have been given?
“The most important thing in Life is to learn how to give out Love, and to let it come in. We think we don’t deserve love, we think if we let it in we’ll become too soft. But a wise man named Levine said it right. He said, ‘Love is the only rational act.’” -Tuesdays with Morrie
If you were candy, what would you be?
I would be a dark chocolate truffle covered in chocolate shavings with an orange filling. YUM :D

Leslie Valerie “LES” Lipa
19 years old
Fourth year, AB Management Economics, Ateneo De Manila University
The three things you can’t live without
: Les lives her life with 3 Ls: Lotion (I have been putting on lotion everyday ever since I was about 3 years old. Oddly enough, it just doesn’t feel normal without it), lists (I am extremely dependent on lists and I love making them. They are brain extensions wherein I put things I know I can’t entrust with my sometimes faulty memory), and literature (I grew up with words all around me and I just can’t imagine living without them).
What superpower would you like to have?
Mind reading. I feel that we’re missing out on a lot of things not knowing what people actually mean, or are too afraid to say out loud. But then again, if we all could read minds, yes, life is a lot simpler, but a lot less beautiful.
If you were candy, what would you be?
Mint, because I offer a fresh perspective on life.

Marianne “MARS” Salazar
18 years old
Second year, BA Journalism, UP Diliman
Describe yourself in five words:
Not your average fun-sized monster.
Three things you can’t live without:
food, shelter, clothing ;P plus my loved ones, but they’re not exactly things, are they? XD
What superpower would you like to have:
I want to be able to travel through time. Best history lesson one could ever have.

Ma. Victoria Isabel “VICKY” Marquez
16 years old
Fourth year, San Beda College Alabang
Three things you can’t live without:
A book to read before bedtime (I need to supply my head with fresh thoughts so it won’t drive itself to madness whilst my body tries to recuperate from that day’s abuse), my glasses (a blind Vicky will only contribute to the negative energy given off everyday), and freedom of expression (If I don’t express myself one way or another, I will burst).
What superpower would you like to have?
Extendable eyeballs. Useful for stalking boys, and for when teachers assume that you can see the board clearly just because you have glasses.
What is the best advice you have been given?
The best advice I’ve been given is to “let it be,” courtesy of The Beatles. I’m a closet control freak (a trait I only discovered a couple of days ago) and sometimes I want to take control of the things that I can’t, resulting to me being massively overwhelmed. So by letting things be, I do what I can today, and then worry about tomorrow tomorrow.
