Day in the Life of Candy
Author Archive
Writer’s block. It comes in every writer’s life. For me, it is the most inconvenient feeling (especially if you have two vignettes due the following day and an empty document in front of you).
But what I’ve learned is that to be able to cure writer’s block, one must not fight it, and instead learn to embrace it. Here’s the silver lining: experiencing writer’s block gives you the opportunity to pursue other things left on your to-do list. In my case, experiencing writer’s block allowed me to:
- reread Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
- paint
- take photos of my cheeseburger
- fix my Tumblr theme
- watch Glee
- talk to a close friend who is on the other side of the world
- braid my hair
- discover amazing photos on Flickr
- begin a reading blog
- consume two Krispy Kremes.
Writer’s block isn’t some mad writing disease, but actually an excuse to take a break from your prosaic and poetic pursuits. Find some other avenues where you can channel your creativity, and before you know it, you would have discovered another hidden talent of yours that is beyond the realms of penning.
Good luck Candy Girls!

Are you tired of schoolwork? Would you like to take your mind off of that looming dreadful Physics exam? Here are a list of things to do:
- Obsess over your Tumblr layout.
- Have a Degrassi: The Next Generation marathon then…
- …Google photos of Holly J Sinclair’s new hairstyle so you can have your stylist copy it during the semestral break.
- Have dinner with your High School friends who already finished their first semester.
- Watch How I Met Your Mother bloopers.
- Tell your brother to do his homework (then sneak-off to the computer to continue watching the HIMYM bloopers).
- Call your lola and tell her you miss her.
- Re-learn your French.
- Crush on Sam Earle and Kirk Long.
- Sleep. Eat. Sleep.
Yes, I only have less than a few days. Ohmygod, what am I doing?
“So near, yet so far,” —Jazmin, on sembreak.
Will Seriously Work Now,
Alekx ♥

Lists and Mini-Mags
October 1, 2010 at 6:13 pmTags: ateneo, Candy Fair 2010, college, Council of Cool 10 Mini-Mag, finals, Halloween, semestral break
It just dawned on me on how it’s been a long time since I have actually made an update about what’s happening inside my life and what’s occupying my head. So, I decided to make a list of the things/ideas that recently made me smile and frown.
What makes me frown (aka the BOO List):
- Finals Week. In two weeks time, I’ll be taking my final exams and I’m seriously freaking out. Probably because there are a ton of things that I have yet to finish. Until then, I’ll be living, breathing, eating, drinking schoolwork. How is it possible for a nerd to love school and dislike taking exams? I don’t know, I just do.
- Monster Season. Echoing Vicky’s sentiments a few days ago… I don’t like monsters/the bad supernatural/the gruesome etc. etc. I’m biting my nails and hiding under covers this Halloween.
What makes me smile (aka the HAPPY Thoughts):
- Semestral Break. I have four different groups of friends planning get-togethers, which are bound to be super fun! Plus, I have already lined up DVD marathons and book lists as part of my to-do list this coming break. More than that, the mere fact that sembreaks offer the chance for students to start anew in school always gives me the feeling of optimism when it comes to my schoolwork.
- Back-to-Back-to-Back. I may not be a true Atenean, but you could easily guess that I live the Ateneo way. My siblings and I are up and about, jumping to our hearts’ content as Ateneo swept away UAAP Season 73′s Championship Title earning them a Back-to-Back-to-Back win. (Maaaann… my brother and I are hardcore Eagles fans, both school and Bball team)
- Candy Fair tomorrow. Oh yeah! Candy Cuties, fun booths, and bonding time with my Council of Cool gal pals. Who’s not excited?
- Our Council of Cool Mini-Mag (found in the October 2010 issue). The Council of Cool had too much fun doing this project. While it does signify, in one way or another, the looming end of our stint, making it is still the most significant experience ever as being part of the council (more on this on future entries).

I mean, what with all the clothes-hunting with Jaz, article-writing, fun photo shoots, boys, meeting people, and boys… did I already mention boys? Oh, too bad. Boys, boys, boys!

In this issue, we help you become your best, unique INDEPENDENT self. We have Jessica Mendoza on the cover, Pam Bama and Tricia Gosingtian on our Fashion pages, while Candy Cuties Nico Ibaviosa and Albie Casiño answer your most pressing guy questions.
So make sure you grab a copy, Candy Girls, okay? And tell us what you love about it!

All the love,

And indeed it is!
Or at least yesterday, when I went straight home from school to catch the much-awaited Season Premiere of Glee!
The first episode of Season 2 didn’t disappoint! New characters, new music, and new story lines—it’s hard to keep track of which ones have us oozing on our seats and wishing for more. Meanwhile, I have listed my favorite things from yesterday’s episode, things you should totally look forward to. SPOILERS INCLUDED!
- Jacob’s New Directions expose. Especially when he innocently tells Mr. Schuester, “Do you know there’s a forum on my blog begging you to stop rapping?”
- Brittany’s one-liners. Her line “People thought I went on vacation, but actually I spent the summer lost in the sewers.” made me go, what?
- The Cheerio’s sign-up sheet, which is about 500 pages long, bearing the words, “NO FATTIES!” Totally Sue Sylvester!
- The look on Mr. Schue’s face when he learned Ken Tenaka had a nervous breakdown.
- New Directions’ rendition of “Empire State of Mind.”
- Finn’s totally masculado glee club sign-up sheet which eventually led him to discovering Sam Evans’ awesome singing voice while in the shower, a reference to his getting discovered by Mr. Schue.
- Rachel and Sunshine Corazon’s totally awesome sing-off over “Telephone.”
- Rachel saying, “… who is a Filipino and is shorter than me, which I didn’t think is possible, and is very unnerving.”
- FINN’S 20-SECOND CHEERIOS AUDITION ROUTINE. ‘Nuff said.
- Quinn Fabray sashaying down William McKinley’s hallway like the Queen Bee she truly is.
- And Sunshine Corazon hamming it up with “Listen.” Because I may not be the biggest Charice fan (just ask my friends), but we all know she killed it!

An Interview With Tieka
September 14, 2010 at 7:15 pmTags: bloggers, interview, people, selective potential, tieka dierolf
Loyal Candy girls, if you have last month’s issue of Candy, then there is a possibility that you might have chanced upon Ms. Marla’s mood board. And if so, you would’ve seen her small feature on selective potential’s Tieka Dierolf.
Like Ms. Marla, I have found Tieka (pronounced as tee-kuh) on the world wide web and have instantly fallen in love with her and her style.
But as much as I would love to have the honor of introducing her to you, I would rather she would through an interview I have managed to score a few weeks ago, which was done through emails—with me frantically/anxiously/excitedly waiting for her replies—only to fortify my presumption that she is a blogger of the “awesome” kind.
The interview is quite lengthy, but that’s only because I had a hard time picking out which of her answers to include.
Take a peek inside her world:
Describe your personal style.
I like to describe my personal style as very feminine, yet with a grunge twist. I love florals, patterned tights and heels, but I love to mix them with bomber jackets, lace-up boots and wedges. I grew up in a punk rock community, so I have that background, but I’m also very much a girly-girl. I love to mix the two styles.
Your top three closet staples are…
A floral dress (preferably darker colors, reds, earthtones), a bomber jacket, and my lace-up Jeffrey Campbell boots. I can mix those with everything in my closet.
How did you overcome entering the very intimidating world of fashion blogging?
To be totally honest, I had no idea what I was getting myself into! They say that ignorance is bliss and I guess that worked out perfectly in my case, because I started my blog without having a clue of who I was up against! But I’ve come to learn that the girls in the blogging community are so amazing and supportive. You get a few that have jealousy issues and you get a few mean or intimidating comments, but compare that to the amazing girls I’ve met and the downsides don’t even matter. I’ve truly grown as a person because of my blog.
How do you incorporate your work in graphic design to your outfits?
I feel like graphic design ties in perfectly with my blog and personal style! I attended a small, private art college and there is so much inspiration within the walls of that school. Everything I learned—color mixing, principles and elements of design—all of it helped me learn my own personal style. A lot of my artwork includes colors and styles that you can see in my outfit posts, which is just so fun to see how my brain works the same in two different elements!
How does the sights and sounds of Michigan on your blog influence your style?
Michigan definitely is a huge influence on my style. We have four very distinct seasons that inspire my personal style immensely. So many spots in our state—the beach, the dunes, the forests, the historic sights—all directly inspire so many of my posts. I think of where I’m going, what colors are there, what outfit would just fit perfectly with where I’ll be? It honestly makes styling a lot easier too!
What do you like to do on your downtime?
On my [downtime], I’m a [huge] movie buff. Brett and I go see a movie in the theater at least once or twice a week and I also have a very large collection of DVD’s that I love to just pop in and veg on the couch. I also love music—I play guitar and sing. Brett and I are currently working on a little side project (he plays drums!) and I also am a neat freak so I spend a lot of time cleaning the apartment and organizing! Brett also plays in a band and I’ll go see his shows on the weekends and all of our friends will grab a late night dinner at our favorite diner!
And finally, if you could have any superpower what would it be?
Time travel! Or something with time. I feel like my life is passing by so quickly, I’d just to just go and travel to the past, see myself when I was younger, see my grandpa, travel to the future, pause time if I could you know? That’d be the best thing ever.

Tell me what you think! Or better yet, visit selectivepotential.blogspot.com and see Tieka’s gorgeousness for yourself!
