Our school is now celebrating Linggo ng Wika, a week dedicated to our national language, Filipino.
Within this week we will be doing all sorts of activities. Each batch is assigned a certain festival for which they will present a dance. Our batch’s festival is the Panagbenga, or the flower festival (in Baguio). We have quite an exciting dance prepared with plenty of stunts and props.
Besides dancing, there will also be group contests for singing and reciting poems. For the singing portion my class chose the song “Sandalan” by 6Cycle Mind. We decided to give a story to the song by dividing the class into different stereotypes (geeks, jocks, cheerleaders, etc.) but leaving out one person who plays the misfit new student.
Here are a few pictures from our rehearsal:
There are two important Filipino traits that the song embodies. One is our ability to empathize with each other. In good times and bad, we are there for one another. We are also a very happy people. Despite worries and problems we have the ability to take things in stride, to smile and to make others feel better.
I took this time to pause a while and think of our good points as a people during this week when we honor our heritage through our national language.
Proud to be Pinoy!
Patricia
P.S.
Thank you Sally Ortiz for the pictures!
