Happy 100th University of the Philippines, Diliman! Yep, my beloved school is that old and as much as some may say that it does show, I must disagree because the school has much youth in it than anyone could possibly imagine.
I start with an apology because I failed to capture moments during the celebration because I left my camera and my phone had troubles as well but I will try my best to let you visualize what happened. I had a seven in the morning class, which ends at eight-thirty but luckily ended at eight sharp. Sadly, classes weren’t suspended but I do understand why. Besides, it’s impossible that all the students in my school would have class at the same time. Anyway, the celebration started at 8:30 and ended at most probably in the afternoon. The whole academic oval was closed for the celebration, which caused some pretty heavy traffic on the outside roads. There was a very big band dressed in blue, yellow and white outfits in front of Palma Hall (AS) playing their percussion instruments and changing the peaceful crowd into a group of enthusiastic people!
I know that pretty much everyone has heard about UP’s tradition of the Oblation Run. And yes, what you’re thinking is right! There was an Oblation Run held in Palma Hall as always, where men proudly strutted nude in recognition of Mr. Oble. Being a freshman a year ago, I was definitely intrigued with that whole event so I actually witnessed it last year so yesterday was the time to shock the once freshmen like me. Hehe! After that was a parade of students and faculty members that I failed to see completely since I was already rushing to my next class.
Yesterday, University of the Philippines, Diliman was an open university. Everyone was free to join in and commemorate the special event. Good thing though, I left my ID in my other bag so I failed to bring it. Hihi! Just my luck! And I am thankful for the luck I have gotten to be able to study in this University. IÂ must admit, I have had my doubts before but after a year of being an Iskolar ng Bayan, nothing beats the pride and honor that I feel everyday I go to school. I have no regrets.
Yesterday, UP was founded 100 years ago (1908) and I am very much grateful! That night as well, they held a huge celebration in The Cultural Center of the Philippines but I failed to come because it’s a school night and I have quizzes tomorrow. What a bummer. But once again, happy 100th Unibersidad ng Pilipinas!
With love and pride for my school,
Rubie
