On Passion

Contrary to what other people say, I really don’t see myself as an athletic individual.  I cannot play basketball or baseball to save my life. I’ve tried to bend it like Beckham and played soccer ONCE. I would share to you how I did Kaka justice and how utterly amazing I was out on the field with a winning goal bagged under my belt.

But then again, that would be called lying.

But I do love to play some sports, non-team sports to be exact. Haha! My dad influenced me to join a couple million sports growing up and though I practically fell down on most occasions, scraped my knee, and cried. I liked the adrenaline rush that came with it.

But if there’s one sport that got me really interested, it’s Taekwondo. I was honed to kick and punch for the last seven years. The long hours of footwork and sparring practices practically left my body to be completely fragile the next day. My dad had to stock up on muscle pain relievers on a regular basis. You have no idea how much we have everyday! ((:

After seven years of consistently beating up someone (or vice versa haha!), I put down my black belt to pursue another sport: fencing. A lot of people were discouraging me to move to another sport because they felt that it was such a waste for me to just forget about Taekwondo. I understood their sentiments but felt like it was time for me to challenge myself again and move on to greater heights.

And I did.

I’m currently starting from scratch and I’m learning the basics of fencing with the school’s varsity team. I get really pressured sometimes because I’m training with seasoned UAAP players! They’re all really fast and extremely good! But they’ve always been very supportive of me and keep telling me that it really is a slow climb uphill. I never really complained.

Right now, I do enjoy the sport and I don’t see myself pursuing another one anytime soon. And I think that’s the most important thing right now—that I love what I do and I feel passionate about something.

And it could be the same for you. Maybe if you find that inclination for a hobby, a sport, or a talent of some sort—when you find that niche that you feel that you’re most comfortable with, it’s really easy to just let go. In the end, you just have to trust yourself that everything will fall into place.

So go on and try out something new! Never fear of what other people may think of you. Because it is when we take the most chances that we learn to let go and let life.

Letting the chips fall where they may,
Sandra
