The Birthday Month

Wow! Seems like were celebrating a lot of birthdays this May. So we have Bea, Micah’s mom, Sandy’s friends, Crissy, ate Macy’s dad and brother. Happy Birthday to all these people! But can I please add one more person to the list? Please?
I knew you’d say yes. Haha! Thanks!
I was nine and she was ten when I first realized how much she loves me. I was a big kid, a really big kid. It was no surprise that taking the stairs to my classroom, which was unfortunately located on the third floor of the building, became a major challenge for me. At first, I carried a stroller thinking that it would be easier since I just have to pull it up, but I was so wrong! I then changed it to a backpack. It was a bit easier to carry but I was still panting like a dog upon reaching the room. My boy classmates even made fun of me. So bad! Tsk, tsk!
I told her about it, but instead of comforting me, all she said was “magpapayat ka kasi.” I hated her because of that.
The next day, after the flag ceremony, I was preparing myself to climb up that nasty stairs again when I noticed that someone was carrying my bag with another bag that looks so familiar. I ran towards her and saw the face that almost made me cry. She was having a hard time carrying our bags. She was thin and carrying two bags wasn’t exactly easy for her. But she was doing it because of me. From that day on, she became my best friend, my very best friend.
Candy girls, meet my one and only ate.

I couldn’t thank her enough for everything that she has done for me: all those late night tutorials in English and Literature, our movie marathons in Bataan, and the choco-overload treats whenever I’m feeling down. I am just so lucky to have a sister like you in my life.

Happy birthday, ate. You will always be my sister-friend. Love you!
A million X’s and O’s,
Mheems (:
