Coming Out

My mother thinks that debuts are overrated—from the frilly dress, to the expansive list of everything eighteen, to birthday greetings and wishes, to color schemes, and to the cotillion that comes with every coming-of-age event. I, on the other hand, am the complete opposite. I love debuts and would have gladly thrown myself one, if not for the raised eyebrow of my mother.

I spent my last weekend attending not one, but two debuts of my two closest high school friends. I try to attend every debut as possible (to the dismay of my dad), especially the ones thrown by my high school friends. I rarely get to talk to any of them because we study in different colleges and time does not seem to permit any of us with some girl bonding. So when opportunity knocks, I say Carpe Diem!

I was ecstatic because Otts, one of the debutantes, got me to host her debut alongside her older sister, Nicky. If there’s one thing I really love doing, it’s hosting a party. So when I was tapped to host, I was completely excited and jumped right into the idea! It was a wonderful night filled with so many surprises. I met new people and got reunited with some old ones. My high school friends changed so much over the year and I was extremely glad that I was able to share a few laughs and exchange stories again, just like old times.

Though I lacked sleep (and had eye bags to complement it), I put my game face on for another fun-filled debut the next night in Acropolis. Audrey (the debutante) and I have been friends since we were in grade school! So you could just imagine how highly emotional I was when they showed a video presentation about her growing up. I never realized how much she had changed over the past couple of years and I was getting all teary-eyed just thinking about it.

It was odd seeing our high school faces plastered on the screen. I find it really weird how much you could change over the next 365 days! It’s so surprising don’t you think? We all looked so different already, it was almost impossible! Haha!

The debuts got me all sentimental and emotional. I don’t mean to get into the whole it-seemed-like-it-was-only-yesterday-when-we… phase right now but I can’t help but reminisce over all of this.

Sandra with friends We all seem to live very independent lives right now—with the freedom and liberalism that comes with college and the whole coming-of-age, it’s funny how differently we all think. I know eighteen is just another age and it’s just another year turned older, but within the 365 days in which you’re right smack in the middle between adolescence and adulthood, it really gets you thinking…
I missed goofing around with them!

Sandra and friends…how much have I changed over the year? And what makes me think I’m ready to be part of the adult world?

turning 18 is really something to look forward to…
but maybe because of financial difficulties..people tend to put aside the fun being a debutant brings,…but we can’t blame them right!!!

but still…personally,,turning 18 is really an exciting part of being a woman..:)))
