Day in the Life of Candy

I am an incoming Mass Communication minor in Broadcast Journalism student of St. Scholastica’s College-Manila. One of our requirements for graduation is a 200-hour practicum in a media organization/outfit. My mind was set to have my internship at a prominent TV station but they told us the number of students who will be accepted for internship quite late already. Unfortunately, I did not make the cut. I felt bad but the optimist in me reminded me that maybe I was not really meant to have my practicum there to expose me to other media outfits. So I applied to other media organizations but then most of the stations, TV and radio, were pretty swamped with interns already. Good thing—or should I say, with Divine Intervention—RADIO VERITAS accepted my friend and I for internship at their good station. Thank you mga KAPANALIG! (Kapanalig is the term used in Veritas that pertains to the listeners. It may also mean, brother or sister.)

I had a great time during my radio production class so I thought I knew a lot about the ropes of the radio industry already. However, I was wrong! In my short stint as an intern in Radio Veritas, I learned a lot of things not only radio production but also how media performs.

Here are some of the things I did, learn and experienced while interning for Radio Veritas:
1. I researched a lot! I was given a number of topics to research. One of which is a databank of priests with double degrees. I had to call the seminaries, congregations and parishes. Thank God, they invented the Catholic directory! It is different from the PLDT directory or what you call the white and yellow pages. My patience and determination were really tested when I was researching. I felt so fulfilled when I finally passed my research to Ms. Lany Cabral, Operations head of Radio veritas. I think I filled five clear books with my research.

As soon as I learned how to read, I would read anything I could find. Whether that meant reading the back of cereal boxes or cookbook instructions, I was happy. Eventually, I found the magic in book stores and libraries. I would spend hours meeting interesting people, visiting faraway places, and solving exciting mysteries in the virtual world where my books brought me.

But my reading frenzy didn’t last forever. As I got older, I lost interest. I didn’t want to read books when it was so much easier to watch television or surf the internet on the computer. I felt stubborn when my parents and teachers told me to read more. I wanted to do my own thing.

So I went on without reading anything more than I “ought to.” I decided not to waste my time and money on something I was already—technically doing. After all, reading websites are included, I justified.

No thank you, I’m not interested

Yesterday was my twenty-first birthday. :D Yep, I’m 21, the oldest in the COC 8, and unfortunately the smallest, too. Oh well.

Many people would cringe at the thought of another birthday, but I’m especially thrilled that I’m another year older. Not just because it’s another birthday—I’m very much a birthday person—but because I actually love my age! I used to have a lot of issues with my age, since I tend to put lots of deadlines on my life (“I have to accomplish this by this time,” “I should be this at this age,” etc.). If you can believe it, at age 19 I felt like I was running out of time!

Twenty was the first age that I really, really “felt.” I felt 20. I felt my age, for the first time. It was wonderful. I felt like my perspective, my heart, my dreams were all just right for 20. Sure, clumsy me still didn’t always act like 20. And I still didn’t completely look 20 (I even got mistaken for a 13-year-old!). But inside, I loved my age and I began to appreciate it. I felt like I was on track. I didn’t feel old, and I didn’t feel young. I felt just right. :) I’m not sure you get me, but I hope you do! ;p

Here’s a snap of me on my twentieth, and then a snap of my twenty-first.

  1. Being in the arms of someone I love. =) (who doesn’t?)
  2. The taste of chocolate! =D (You gotta love it!)
  3. Riding on the back of a tricycle while it’s drizzling and feeling the raindrops spray on my face.

Last week I attended the debut of one of my favorite people, Danehboy. No, she is not a boy—I think, I hope. Haha! She’s the sister of our beloved, Nikki Gil. (My darling, I think hanggang dyan nalang muna identity mo! Hahaha, kidding, Dani!) Well, I’ll tell you more about her. She’s talented, smart, pretty, and she’s very, very nice (Plug! Plug! Plug! Single and available, boys! Haha!) Like what I said earlier—one of my favorite people!

Her debut theme was Bollywood, hence the career mode outfits present that night, which I have not given much justice due to my lack of cultural awareness. But, yeah, it was so much fun—everything was BIG TIME, as we so fondly call it. Even the prizes—they gave away Nikki’s new CD, very nice! (Go grab a copy, girls!)

A Bollywood Birthday

What’s great about this Bollywood bash is that we get to dress up as something unusual and accessorize unconventionally (like that thing on my forehead! I love it! Ed’s note: That’s called a bindi. :) ) They say it signifies a woman’s married status. A great declaration for me then—I meant for the future! Haha!
