I am an incoming Mass Communication minor in Broadcast Journalism student of St. Scholastica’s College-Manila. One of our requirements for graduation is a 200-hour practicum in a media organization/outfit. My mind was set to have my internship at a prominent TV station but they told us the number of students who will be accepted for internship quite late already. Unfortunately, I did not make the cut. I felt bad but the optimist in me reminded me that maybe I was not really meant to have my practicum there to expose me to other media outfits. So I applied to other media organizations but then most of the stations, TV and radio, were pretty swamped with interns already. Good thing—or should I say, with Divine Intervention—RADIO VERITAS accepted my friend and I for internship at their good station. Thank you mga KAPANALIG! (Kapanalig is the term used in Veritas that pertains to the listeners. It may also mean, brother or sister.)
I had a great time during my radio production class so I thought I knew a lot about the ropes of the radio industry already. However, I was wrong! In my short stint as an intern in Radio Veritas, I learned a lot of things not only radio production but also how media performs.
Here are some of the things I did, learn and experienced while interning for Radio Veritas:
1. I researched a lot! I was given a number of topics to research. One of which is a databank of priests with double degrees. I had to call the seminaries, congregations and parishes. Thank God, they invented the Catholic directory! It is different from the PLDT directory or what you call the white and yellow pages. My patience and determination were really tested when I was researching. I felt so fulfilled when I finally passed my research to Ms. Lany Cabral, Operations head of Radio veritas. I think I filled five clear books with my research.
