As you bled from their smoking rifles from miles away, they hid. They hid for it is no mere folklore that a wounded creature may turn into a relentless beast. They watched.
From building windows and cracks on the wall, they watched. You were defenseless and I was impuissant and hamstrung. I couldn't pebetrate their thoughts. Their helmets and bunkers were fortified; fortified by the living. Human shields from all angles, innocent casualties were situational dictates.
You stood there, dead center. Though your legs were feeble and your body ailing. You stood there.
An emptied gun thrown at you was your crutch. A hollowed being before my very eyes. It was an unbearable sight—hard, harsh, and painful. As tears stained my cheeks, I saw you look my way. Whether at me or through me, I was unsure. It jolted me. It shook me to the core. Those brown eyes were anything but beastly. They were warm and longing, they were strong but relenting, maybe even forgiving.
That was my tipping point, my undeniable queue. I may be powerless against their armors but I could get through you. You allowed me to. Almost as if you asked me to.
As I got lost in those deep brown eyes, I translated their actions for you. And so I told you:
They weren't even brave enough to stab you, they were cowards that hid from afar. Humans rebel against what threatens them. Human nature forges other to hate others, not for their mistakes, but for their strengths. You are special. Everybody agreed on that, but the actions that followed were poles apart.
I saw you for who you are. Even the you that you hid from the world. Even the you that you hid from yourself. I saw you and you are beautiful.
With that, I saw the first tear drop trickle down your face. Your eyes were brighter, your bearing altered and your body, gleaming. Thr surrounding phantoms were shattered. Around us, guns were powdered, masks were ripped, and enemies disappeared. As you stepped on a puddle, you saw something, someone. It was your reflection but not quite. It was familiar and yet strange.
What you saw, my love, what you finally saw was yourself through my eyes.
