What Makes Us Laugh: The Candy Oops Book
Wednesday, March 21st, 2012Years back, I remember entering a random store and spotting two teenagers holding their newest copy of Candy magazine. They tore the plastic, excitedly flipped through the pages, and immediately turned to the Oops spread. I remember feeling so thrilled about unexpectedly seeing them because: 1) that was one of my sections, and 2) they found the stories genuinely funny (as in they were laughing out loud, cringing, and OMG-ing!). To this day, I get kilig whenever a reader reveals she identifies with the section because some of the stories have happened to her.
When we sat down and planned for the Candy books we wanted to release this 2012 (we were so happy with the feedback we got from the Candy Style Guide), we decided to whip up a special Oops compilation to honor all the best stories we’ve compiled over the last few years.
This must-have read is LOADED with 100% real blunders related to boys, parties, friends, holidays, school, animals, celebrities, and family members both young and old. It also contains gross stories (Eww!) and funny one-liners to help you recover from your own embarrassing moments (try them and tell us which works best!). Plus, there’s that all-important feature on how to Oops-proof your life written by Marla (because who wants to experience a humiliating moment, right?).

Here’s a sample of some of stories found inside the book.
To celebrate the end of another grueling school year and mark the start of a uber-fun summer, I highly suggest you grab a copy of The Candy Oops Book and bring it with you wherever you go over the next two months. I promise you it won’t be an epic fail.
The Candy Oops Book is available at all bookstores for P150.

What We Make: Summer Playlists
Sunday, March 11th, 2012Whenever I go out of town, I make sure my iPod is full to the brim with new songs. This year, I’ve taken two trips already (fun!) and there’s another one due before the end of the month (with the Candy Girls!), so it’s no surprise my trusty gadget is packed with random songs I heard from TV shows or bands I discovered online. Here are some tunes you might enjoy listening to when you take a road trip or jet set to an international destination:
1) “I Fell in Love” – Whitton
This is a light, whimsical tune sung by a girl who feels giddy in love. I first heard it for a Gossip Girl promo on Dair, but there’s a cute Chair compilation featuring the same track here.
2) “Titanium” – David Guetta feat. Sia
Sia is hands down one of my favorite female artists (I love how vulnerable her voice sounds) and her collaboration with David Guetta is fun and empowering, especially the lines that go: “You shoot me down, but I won’t fall. I am titanium.” Watch the official MV here.
3) “Tongue Tied” – Grouplove
Love this song’s intro, the upbeat chorus, and the fun vibe this indie band exudes. Even their video to the song has a trippy wackiness to it.
4) “Diet Mountain Dew” – Lana del Rey
Lana has been described as a gangsta Nancy Sinatra, and her tunes really have a lot of swagger. My favorite of hers is “Video Games,” but this seems more like a fitting summer tune. Listen to the remix by Tommy Noble.
5) “Sweet Dreams” – The Grates
This energetic Aussie duo’s music video showcases an explosion of color (literally). It’s a bit morbid, but all in all crazy fun!
What songs are you planning to blast in your speakers or earphones this summer? Share them with me! I love discovering new music.

What We Dream Of: Happily Ever Afters
Saturday, March 3rd, 2012Hi Candy Girls!
There’s something truly magical about watching Disney movies, especially the ones based on fairy tales about headstrong heroines and dashing princes. No matter how many times I watch these animated flicks, they never fail to give me goosebumps or cause me to shed a tear or two (yes, I’m a big crybaby!). As editor in chief of Disney Princess Magazine, I make it a point to watch these movies every so often not just because I need to do research, but also to indulge the kid in me.
Let me share you some of my favorite Disney Princess moments—the ones that make me sometimes wish I had a real-life prince to call my own. Swoon!
1) “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid
There are so many unforgettable moments from this movie (such as the spine-tingling “Part of Your World” to the fun crustacean performance of “Under the Sea”), but to this day, this has got to be my favorite song. The setting of the scene is just so divine (not to mention kilig-inducing!), the way the tune “accidentally” comes together is just so delightful, and, most importantly, Ariel and Eric are just so adorable together. Don’t you agree?

2) “I See the Light” from Tangled
Speaking of songs that take place in boats, here’s another one of my favorites from Disney’s newest princess movie! I love the characters from this cartoon because they’re just so hilarious together. The animation for this song is simply divine. It also doesn’t hurt that the song is sung ever so sweetly by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. (In real life, Zachary is also a darling! I’m sure Macy agrees.)

3) “Something There” from Beauty and the Beast
It’s cute how the Beast fumbles around Belle, and how they discover how much they’re starting to like each other. It’s certainly how a new love feels like, when you’re unsure about how to act in front of another person but delighted to be in their presence.

4) “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” from Hercules
Technically, this isn’t a Disney Princess movie, but I love it just the same. This song is definitely for all the girls who are sooo in denial. I’m sure we’ve all been there once or twice. Wink!

5) “So This is Love” from Cinderella
Though Cinderella only has until midnight to get to know the prince, this lazy love song she sings with him seems to make time stand still. The slow dance, the intense gaze into each other’s eyes, the leisurely walk over a glittering bridge… Aaah! Heaven on earth.

What We Can’t Get Enough Of: Boybands
Saturday, February 25th, 2012Hi Candy Girls!
Yesterday, Angel and I got to attend the press con for The Greatest Hits Tour featuring Brit boybands Blue and a1 as well as Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees. Seeing them in the flesh gave me goosebumps, reminding me of how much I loved (yes, LOVED!) them back then.

Highlights of the press con included a1′s Ben (looking mighty fine!) asking the first question for Blue, a1′s Mark sharing he enjoyed meeting Anne Curtis, Blue’s Lee spilling how much fun they had putting shaving cream on a1′s tour car as a prank, Blue’s Simon talking about their genuine love for music, and Jeff revealing that “Invisible Man” (my absolute fave 98 Degrees song!) first became a hit in our homeland. As an added treat for the press (who I’m sure were all closet fans as well), the boys sang a few lines from their favorite tracks. a1 took the lead by singing “Like A Rose,” Blue followed with “Too Close,” and Jeff ending the show with “The Hardest Thing.” You can watch the adorbs video here.
After seeing these guys in the flesh, I decided to dig up my old photos with a1 during their first visit to Manila. I’m happy to report that these guys are still as charming, down-to-earth, and genuinely nice. I miss Paul though (the naughty one making a kissy face!).

If you want to reminisce and sing along to the biggest hits of these boybands (believe me, there are too many songs to mention!), contact TicketNet box office at 911-5555 or Wilbros Live at 374-2222 ASAP. The concert will be staged tonight at the SMART Araneta Colliseum!

What We Love: Discovering New Spots
Thursday, February 9th, 2012Over the weekend, my friends opened their donut shop named Gavino’s Donuts at the newly opened Madison Square on Granada St., Quezon City (if you’re coming from Ortigas Avenue, just work your way towards Gilmore Avenue and look at the right side of the street!).

The store Gavino’s was named after their firstborn son—a two-year-old cutie pie named Gavin (sadly, he wasn’t around when we visited!). I’m sure Gavin’s mouth would water if he saw the donuts selection his parents prepared for the store.

(Top) A bevy of donut flavors! (Left) Glazed and gummy bear-topped donuts. (Right) Chocolate and bavarian cream-filled mochi donuts.
It was a blast sampling the flavors while sipping a cup of Brazilian coffee (yum!). The pancake-like batter gave the uniquely-shaped donuts a chewier texture, making the experience belly satisfying (haha!). My top three picks from Gavino’s Donuts are: Chocolate Krunch (it had chocolate icing and rice krispies on top!), Ensaymada (sweet + salty = knockout combo!), and Glazed (an understated classic).
I also enjoyed hanging out with my friends at Gavino’s Donuts because of this little angel…

Avery is less than two months old, but she already gets to go out with her mom and dad. She’s such a darling, and I was so happy to meet her for the very first time.
I hope you and your friends can drop by Gavino’s (it’s in the same complex where the new McDonald’s and Sumo Sam are at) to try their one-of-a-kind donuts. And while you’re at it, why not play some boardgames found inside the shop? We didn’t have time, but I sure would have wanted to play Pictionary or Monopoly Deal!
Maybe I’ll run into you there? ![]()
