Can you imagine traveling across Europe with only cans of Red Bull as your currency? That’s exactly what UP students Dave Agbayani, Red Calayan, and R-jay Esposo did for Red Bull’s “Can You Make It?” competition this summer. Relying on the kindness of complete strangers, they traded the cans for food, lodging, transpo, and everything else. Among the 100 teams, the boys—who dubbed themselves The Beasts of the Southeast—didn’t make it to the top bracket, but they did reach six countries and traveled a total of 1906 km with just 167 cans. That’s definitely #winning in our books.

Do you want to build a snowman?

The highlights of their super adventure:

  • Favorite country: Slovenia. Because there’s LOVE in sLOVEnia. Kidding aside, Slovenia was the country where we felt most welcome! The people were really willing to share their lives with us. But in terms of sightseeing, we liked Switzerland more. While hitchhiking, we met a great guy named Phil, who did a detour and brought us to the mountaintop just so we could touch the snow!
  • Best trade: Ah, this is a tough one. Maybe when we traded the cans for accommodation and dinner in a Slovenian home. They gave us Slovenian folk dance lessons, and in return, we taught them tinikling.
  • Most difficult experience: The first night in Slovakia. No one would pick up hitchhikers there so we had to walk from Bratislava to the border of Austria. We tried hitchhiking until the middle of the night. We got so tired that we slept for an hour on the side of the highway in the freezing cold, and then we had to walk for two more hours!
  • Best meal: Adobo prepared by a Filipino family in Italy!
  • Lesson learned: Money doesn’t make the world go round. There are still A LOT of people who help strangers without expecting anything in return. They help just because they want to, as simple as that!
