Ellie’s got a point: Anything Could Happen, actually. Rigid cynics would probably dismiss this as a flighty approach to living—after all, sometimes the most spontaneous people also tend to be the flakiest and the most indecisive—but when done right, an Anything Could Happen Attitude is powerful enough to pave the way for surprises and good changes and a deeper sense of positivity. It’s also a great motivator: because anything could happen, you jump at every chance to give 100%; every single day, you want to look and say and do your best, work your hardest, be your kindest, and feel your happiest. Because anything could happen and you want to be ready, you stock up on the big things: hope, faith, truth, courage, strength.

I hope you welcome the unexpected and the unpredictable this year, and I hope every surprise you stumble upon in the next 365 days makes you smarter and better and more in tune with just how crazy-fortunate you are to be immersed in this infinitely strange and beautiful life.
