Sucker For You

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010
by macy

The first John Mayer song I ever heard was “Neon” courtesy of my older brother—I get all my music from him, haha. I liked it. Then, I started to listen to all of his other songs. I was hooked. It was like there was a song for every phase you were going through in life. I’m tired of being alone so hurry up and get here—my angsty teen years when I thought being single was the worst (uh, it’s not!). Our love was comfortable and broken in—when I was head-over-heels in love. Girls become lovers who turn into mothers so mothers be good to your daughters too—when my mom got sick. Anything other than yes is no, anything other than stay is go, anything less than I love you is lying—now that I’ve learned never to settle for anything less than I deserve. (:

I spent a lot of time listening to live recordings of his shows. I loved his short spiels in between songs and how he’d talk to the audience. I have one of “Break Away” where he asks the audience for topics he could sing about.
JM: So I got a couple more to play for you. I could make up something up. Should I make something up? If I ask for a topic then you could give something that I don’t… then I could suck! Why don’t I just do a song…
Someone in the audience yells: Buying a frog at a pet store!
JM: Buying a frog at a pet store? Well, that’s too easy. Ahh… I have no secrets at all.

or his spiel before playing “Love Song For No One.”

“This is a song about talking to a person you haven’t even met yet… You just gotta wait your turn. He’s out there, she’s out there, they’re just learning what to contrast you against.”

And even with all the bad press about him (I try not to read them, haha! I love him for his music!), I still can’t stop listening to his songs. My YM status is a line from his song. My Last.fm profile will show you how much I’ve been listening to John Mayer nonstop the past couple of days. I’ve been exchanging with our former intern Reggie about how I’m already getting ready to get my cry on. God knows we’ll be crying when he sings “Friends, Lovers, or Nothing.” After listening to Battle Studies, all I could think was… this man does heartbreak so well.

And this Friday, I am hoping against hope that he’ll sing this lovely medley of four songs I love, “Sucker,” “Love Soon,”  “Comfortable,” and “3×5.”

I’m calling it love soon,
Macy :macy:

Gnew York Gnome

Let’s face it—there is an awful lot of crap that goes around on the Internet every day. There are gossip sites dedicated to tearing down the lives of celebrities, blogs that serve no real purpose, people who have made it their life mission to overshare, and endless video clips of things ranging from disgusting to disturbing.

But once in a while, you stumble upon something like this. Gnome Life chronicles the adventures of a brave gnome who leaves his safe little garden and journeys to the big bad world of New York. He rides the subway, crosses the street, goes to barbecues, and hangs out at Central Park. Then, he shares his stories with you. The photos are edgy and funny and slightly creepy; the writing is smart and insightful and so beautiful that I almost want to bottle up his words and take them with me everywhere. I love this site because it gives you a completely unexpected perspective on life and love, on the concept of home and the promise of starting over.

“I’ve traded grass knolls for a New York stoop, but still, I am found waiting for something that never comes.”

This is one of my favorite photos. I keep waiting for Marshall to come and sit beside him, holding an engagement ring and a broken heart, and for Ted to show up in a yellow cab, all high hopes and happiness, the night after he made it rain.

Good luck, Gnew York Gnome. I’m really glad I found you.

Love,
Marla

Mia Loves Vanilla Mint

Monday, September 27th, 2010
by mia

I’ve been on a no-holds barred Sweet Tooth Spree the past couple of weeks, and it’s been great. Midnight cheesecake raids with my guy, choco-chip Food For The Gods samplings with my bro, and a Dulce De Leche Ensaymada merienda with the Candy team are some of my foodie high points in the past 24 hours.

I’ve been told consuming a lot of sugar actually makes you want even more, which makes perfect sense to me. Because just this morning, I was so incredibly happy to try Listerine’s Vanilla Mint Mouthwash. It’s perfect for people like me who don’t want those super-harsh rinses that leave your mouth burning with pain. Oh, actually, that means everyone then, haha! Plus the semi-sweet aftertaste is surprisingly refreshing, and incredibly satisfying. :) Tell me if you like it :)

The Little Show That Could

Friday, September 24th, 2010
by mimi

Hi Candy Girls!

It’s no secret I spend devote a number of hours each night watching my favorite TV shows. And during these sacred hours, I MUST NOT BE DISTURBED (scary but true!). With September in full swing, there’s an overflow of US Fall TV Shows to choose from–from fan favorites like Glee and Gossip Girl to hit newcomers like Hellcats. Somewhere along the way, flashier shows get more exposure from the media, leaving behind no more space to promote heartwarming shows such as Life Unexpected.

The cast is adorably brilliant (they’re so tight they even made their own Facebook page packed with behind-the-scenes photos and videos!), the story lines are a bit unrealistic but interesting (in a nutshell: a beautiful orphan girl doesn’t get adopted, so when she asks to be emancipated from the system, she ends up being given back to her real parents), and the dialogue is simply insightful. I dare you to watch it and NOT shed a tear or fall for any of these cute guys: Baze, Bug, Jones, Math, Eric.

Now why am I urging you to give this show a chance? It’s because Kristoffer Polaha, one of LuX‘s lead stars, made a request to spread the word about their awesome show. And because I’m a firm believer of this show, I love their genuinely nice cast (note: I’ve been a fan of Shiri Appleby since her Roswell days), and I enjoy rooting for promising underdogs, I did as he requested!

Life Unexpected is currently on their second season in the States, but you can still catch up by watching the first season on Velvet (Mondays at 9 pm) or on Hallmark (Tuesdays at 11 pm). Here’s a preview:

Loving LuX,
Mimi
