Margaux’s Beauty Stop
Thursday, May 13th, 2010It has always been hard for me to find a hair stylist worth going back to. I usually have good first-time haircuts, but will feel disappointed during my next visit. So I was so happy to finally find a hair stylist and salon that I absolutely love!
I always get the ultimate salon experience at You in Bonifacio High Street. Their head stylist, Mr. YS, is a super cool Japanese hairdresser, who will make sure you are a happy customer during every visit. He follows exactly what you ask for—whether you want a radical change, an easy update, or a simple trim—and makes sure you look fab either way.
A haircut with Mr. YS is quite an experience on its own. During my first time there, he explained every step of his technique by making a drawing of my hair on the mirror in front of me. Then he whipped out his scissors and started cutting in a really interesting and unique manner. I don’t know how to describe it but you should definitely see it for yourself—it’s actually fun just to watch him work!
While you’re at the salon, you should also try their Korean Foot Spa. It’s super relaxing, and not as ticklish as the other treatments I’ve tried. Hehe! My feet became very soft, smooth, and happy.
So if you’re due for a salon day soon, make sure to try this one out! You won’t regret it.
You Salon is at the B3 section of Bonifacio High Street, Taguig City. Call 818-1968, 818-4968, or 0928-3520700 for appointments or inquiries.

Of Love and Politics
Tuesday, May 11th, 2010I logged on to Facebook this morning and was flooded with a wave of very, very strong sentiments about yesterday’s elections. I was inspired by the ones expressing hope: for the Philippines, for the people, for the new leaders. The ones proclaiming we were doomed/stupid/complacent/jejemons (I HATE that word, please stop using it!), or proudly announcing their plans to migrate made my heart ache—are we really this pessimistic, and do we really have this little faith in our country?
Emotions are running high, and I know that you Candy Girls (even those who are too young to vote) are deeply aware of what has happened, is happening, and will happen. I know that you girls have some very strong sentiments, too, and it’s okay, you can go ahead and express them. But please remember to respect each other—no fighting, no name-calling, no bashing. Just a friendly reminder to keep the peace and keep your cool. And to help you do the latter, here’s a lighter take on the elections:
Why Voting for a President is Like Choosing a Boyfriend
1. You do your research diligently, passionately, almost obsessively. You Google him, check his Facebook/Twitter/blog, look into his family background, check the people he hangs out with, and find out what he does in his free time.
2. …But in the end, it all boils down to how much you trust him, and whether or not your heart is really with him. In the end, it all boils down to how much you’re willing to believe it’ll work. Sometimes you can’t even explain completely why you believe—somehow, you just do.
3. Once you’ve made the decision, you discover within yourself a fierce loyalty you never even knew existed. You fight for him. You defend him against people who bring him down. You even try to convince other people to see all the good things you see in him. Most of all, you don’t abandon him when things aren’t going well—you stand by your choice through victory and defeat. You don’t give up that easily.
4. You respect him. You have faith in him. And this faith and respect pushes you to become a better person, not just for yourself but for other people as well. You are inspired to pay it forward.
5. You make sacrifices for him. You stay up all night for him, or endure the summer heat and aching feet, or give up your TV and Internet time for him.
6. You give him a chance to do his best, even if he’s not perfect. You forgive him of his previous mistakes. You allow him to make things right, because while the past cannot be discounted, the present and the future are important, too.
7. Even when things don’t work out exactly as you planned them, you don’t lose hope. You don’t take your anger out on other people by attacking them. You don’t blame each other. You don’t run away to another country. You stay strong, you move forward, and your life goes on.
Comments? Sound off below. But remember—be nice!
Big hugs,
Marla

Street Party
Saturday, May 8th, 2010Guess what, Candy Girls?
Roch, Marla, Margaux, and I had a grand time at the Adidas Originals Street Party last night!

We were entertained by the beat boxers and DJs (they even played BSB’s “Quit Playing Games” late into the night. Haha!), intrigued by the skills of the cycling and skateboarding exhibitionists, impressed by the street magician and cute soccer players, and loved the colorful Adidas outfits and footwear showcased at the fashion show.

All in all it was a fun night, with lots of stars gracing the said event–from Candy Cuties Yael Yuzon and Jon Avila to actresses Iza Calsado and Karylle to ballers Larry Fonacier and JC Intal to stylistas Belle Daza and Vicky Herrera. But one of the reasons why I had such a blast was because of these people…
my friends!
That’s Jann, Blanche, Per, and Dennis behind me and my ride. We totally had a ball snacking on the street food (fishballs, anyone?) and exploring the venue (we enjoyed “riding” the Vespas!).
Adidas has awesome new collections featuring the FIFA World Cup, Japanese streetwear-inspired designs, and even crazy-cool collaborations with French grafitti artist Fafi, so be sure to drop by their stores now!

My Happy List
Thursday, May 6th, 2010Hey, Candy Girls!
I just want to share a few of the things that made me smile the past week.
1. Lunch at Som’s Thai Restaurant with the Candy Team.
I love love love Thai food and my craving was satisfied when the team trooped to Som’s Restaurant (near Powerplant Mall in Rockwell) for lunch last Friday. It’s just like having lunch in Bangkok! Be sure to order the Thai Iced Tea when you’re there. It’s one of our faves (as you can see, we all ordered one)!
2. Lunch date with my dad at Chelsea.
One of my family’s favorite pastimes is eating—and last weekend was no different. Since my mom and sisters were in Hong Kong, my dad and I decided to try the newly-opened Chelsea restaurant at the Podium. I ordered the Norwegian Salmon with mashed potatoes for a healthy meal. But then he also ordered the Greek salad, crab cakes, and sausage rigatoni. Plus we had coffee and a smores cake after. Needless to say, we had enough food leftover for dinner that night!
3. New Nike running gear.
Since I didn’t join my mom and sisters in Hong Kong, I asked them to shop for me instead. They made good on their promise and got me these running stuff from Nike. I can’t wait to try them!
4. Meeting American Idol Season 8 finalist Allison Iraheta.
I’ve been a fan since her Idol days so I got excited when I found out she was in town a few days ago to promote her new album and to perform in Robinsons Place Manila. Did any of you get a chance to catch her show? Luckily, Marla, Mimi, Macy, and I got to meet her in person. She’s so sweet and down to earth! (We love her flaming red hair!) Watch out for our features on her in the June issue and on Candymag.com, where you can get a chance to win a signed photo and a copy of her album!

So what’s on your Happy List this week, Candy Girls? Would love to hear about them!
Love,
Angel

Trip to the Land of Kimchi
Wednesday, May 5th, 2010Since Boys Over Flowers was aired on Philippine TV, my mom kept on talking about these boys. She spent most of her time surfing the net reading articles about the boys and watch their TV guestings and concerts. She decided to visit her idol’s hometown 2 weeks ago and I gladly accompanied her to tour the city of Seoul in Korea.
Seoul is a nice city. The streets are so clean and the people are not as rude as I thought they would be. Despite the language barrier, it was actually easy to talk to them. I just had to talk the way they talk, but in English. Haha! Their weather was supposed to be spring but it was super chilly it felt like it was the start of winter. There’s so much to learn about Korea. Their history is really interesting and they are really rich in culture. Their palaces and temples are so nice and well preserved.
The best thing about Korea (besides shopping) is their street food. The selection of food we saw at the streets of Myeongdong was interesting. It ranges from caramel disks, sausages and even octopus tentacles! I specifically loved the grilled squid. It’s so tasty!
I’ll definitely go back to Korea if I’ll be given the chance. How about you? How was your recent trip? Share them to me!
Annyeonghi Gaseyo,
Roch <3
