New Mag, New Look!

Hi Candy Girls!

June is just around the corner, and to celebrate the return of school (yay or nay?), we’ve whipped up some treats for you and your friends to bond over in between classes. Can I get a “Hip-hip-hooray!”?

Double covers of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner
We don’t want you and your bestie to fight over who’s hotter shirtless, who’s more talented, or who’s the perfect match for Bella, so we decided to let you “flip the mag” depending on your mood. Just between us, we won’t take it against you if you go for Team Edward M-W-F, and Team Jacob T-TH-S. Hehe!

A new look
Check out some of the pages of our awesome June issue! We’ve amped up the layouts, went overboard with stars and dots, and lumped together the pages in color-coded sections for easy reading. We even added a brand-new section for our college-bound readers!

School-savvy articles
Aside from the smashing look, we’ve made it our mission to help you make this school year your best one ever! Whether it’s starting the day right, discovering how to impress your teachers, or finding ways to be a better student, we’ve got you covered! If I were you, I’d make it a point to go over the six-page “Don’t Leave High School Without…” checklist to discover if you’ve been living your HS life to the fullest. If you realize you haven’t, DON’T WORRY! You still have time… or at least a year to accomplish everything!

The perfect school accessory: the Candy School Diary

There are no words to describe how cute this school diary is! Aside from the weekly space where you can jot down your assignments, ideas, and gimmicks, you can attempt to accomplish the monthly goals we’ve set for you, fill up the scrapbook-type pages (Manage your money! Plan a party! Imagine yourself 10 or 15 years from now! Remember the year’s biggest moments!), stick on the cutest stickers on random pages, and even greet your favorite Candy Cutie on his special day. The Candy School Planner is available at all bookstores for P195.

Don’t forget to include us in your back-to-school must-buys, so we can be with you 24/7! :book:

WARNING: Spoilers ahead!

Last year, Mimi, Macy, Marla, and I got up bright and early at 7 am and trooped to Greenbelt to watch the live showing of the American Idol Season 8 finale on the big screen (while having Greenwich pizza for breakfast!). This year, we had to make do with watching the finale on our own TV sets at home.

Frankly, this season has been a disappointing one. Though I really like the top two finalists, Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze (as well as Siobhan Magnus who I think should have made it to the top 3), I don’t feel as passionate about them as I did about Adam Lambert, David Archuleta, and David Cook. But that’s enough reminiscing about seasons past… here’s what I loved about this season’s final results show!

1. Crystal Bowersox’s duet with Alanis Morisette. I love how Crystal rocked the harmonica during her performances. Plus, I’m a big Alanis fan!

2. General Larry Platt sings “Pants On The Ground” with William Hung. The back up dancers actually dropped their pants at the end. It was hilarious!

3. The tribute to Simon. I have to admit, I teared up when they showed videos of Simon from past seasons, when Paula Abdul came to bid him goodbye, and when he gave his farewell speech. I’m so going to miss that ole’ bloke. Idol just won’t be the same without him.

4. All the past Idols in one stage together. I got kilig seeing past winners (with the exception of David Cook) and finalists grace the stage and sing together.

5. Lee being crowned this season’s American Idol. Though I’ve been a Crystal fan from the start, I’m pretty happy for Lee. It was touching how he cried and said it was the happiest moment of his life.

So what were your favorite moments from the finale—and from this season? Will you still be watching next year, even with Simon gone? Would love to hear your thoughts! ;)

Hello, Candy Girls!

Last week, I celebrated my fourth anniversary as an official part of the Candy Team. And while being your Assistant Lifestyle Editor is not always easy-peasy (sometimes, I have to do some actual tough work, like when I have to stare at my computer screen for hours to decide which photo of Logan Lerman’s bangs to publish), I know that churning out ideas and stories about your favorite celebrities, movies, TV shows, and hangouts is something I will never get tired of. Unless you get tired of me first.

So to celebrate my workiversary—yep, I totally just made up a cool new word—I present to you a list of all the things I love about writing, researching, brainstorming, conceptualizing, interviewing, and writing some more for you girls.

1. I love doing food shoots. I love how you can make art out of something so basic, and how it presents so many different possibilities. I love meeting restaurant owners and chefs and seeing how much passion they have for their job. I love how everyone loves food, and how it’s impossible to go back to the office after a food shoot without a smile on my face. Okay, I kinda lied. I love food shoots for the very obvious reason that I get to stuff my face. For free. Today, for example, I had waffles, a chocolate shake, four kinds of pasta, a burger, and fries in a span of three hours. So yeah, let’s move on so I can try to redeem myself.

2. I love doing Candy Cuties shoots. Maybe this isn’t exactly redeeming myself because Candy Cuties shoots aren’t exactly a noble sacrifice, either. But let me clarify that Candy Cuties shoots are a distant second to food shoots. Very distant. I’ve got my priorities straight. Speaking of Candy Cuties, you have until the end of this week to send me your nominations at certifiedcandycutiesATgmailDOTcom. And just a friendly reminder: there’s NO need to nominate someone more than once!

3. I love discovering new music, talented actors and actresses on the rise, and hip new restaurants—and sharing each and every one of them with you. I also like pretending that I “discovered” them first, which isn’t usually a success, because of course you girls are way cooler than me most of the time, and have already discovered the stuff I was pretending to have discovered.

I realized just now that I am neither redeeming myself nor making much sense. So I am stopping at #3, while my dignity is still semi-intact. I’d like to delete this blog entry, but I spent a good 20 minutes writing this (and time is gold—there are shirtless photos of Damon and Stefan that I must attend to), so I figure I might as well just post it, even if I can’t promise it won’t give you a headache.

I can promise you this, though: next time, I’ll try to blog in the morning, when my brain is functioning properly. And to thank you for reading this entry (and congratulate you for making it all the way to the end—woohoo!), here’s an adorable shot of me and my friend with Po the Panda. I give you full permission to crop us out and just keep the cute ninja panda as your wallpaper or something.

Big sleepy hugs,
Marla

Hi Candy Girls!

Did you get to attend the second Candy BFF Camp held yesterday at the Rockwell Tent? Here are some the highlights from that awesome bonding session.

The Cutie Camp Rangers welcomed the BFFs to the event. Two rangers were assigned to one team, and there were eight teams all in all! (Here are some Cuties posing in front of the Havaianas booth which was lit up by cute jelly flip-flops, while the others were being informed about the day’s events.)

The Candy editors were there in full force (Roch was there in spirit). We all got up onstage to pledge the Friendship Oath. Aside from that, we had a laugh posing for pictures in the Caronia Photo Booth.

It was great to see Candy Girls writing on the Freedom Wall, as well as making new friends at the event!

Aside from the exciting activities in store for the Candy Girls, there were also yummy food booths: NYFD, Red Mango, Goodles, and Cerealicious. The Candy team is particularly proud of former Candy editor Shar–she whipped up all the tasty pasta dishes from Goodles!

The BFF Campers were also treated to a special sneak peek–the June Candy flip covers featuring the Eclipse boys as well as the special Eclipse magazine. Three lucky girls won these ginormous covers and one girl even cried tears of joy!

At the end of the fun-filled day, the BFFs were asked to give each other tight hugs. AWW!!!

Are you a true-blue Candy Girl? See if you’ve got all the traits that make up one!

Heavenly Harp Hymns

Thursday, May 20th, 2010
by angel

A few months ago, we met Noelle Cassandra, Asia’s only harpist, singer, and songwriter (not to mention being a star badminton player!). The Candy team was mesmerized by her lovely rendition of Taylor Swift’s Love Story, which she sang while playing the harp. That’s why I was so excited when I found out she recently launched her new album! :))

Here are my favorite tracks:

1. Defying Gravity – If you’re a Glee fan like me, you’d be happy to hear this song on Noelle’s album! While Rachel Berry and Kurt Hummel had their own great versions of the song, Noelle’s rendition coupled with the trills of the harp is just as awesome!

2. Vanilla Twilight – I love Owl City! Noelle ‘s smooth, mellow voice is just perfect for this song and gives it a unique twist.

3. After the Rain – Penned by Noelle Cassandra herself, this slow but uplifting ditty can surely take you out of a rut. “Get up and fight the fight / Take it day by day / Cuz’ there’s always sunshine after the rain.”

4. A Little Too Not Over You – Originally sung by David Archuleta, this song is for all girls who’ve been brokenhearted before—me included. Now if only she could have a duet with Lil’ Archie, then the song would be even more perfect!

5. Push the Button – Yes, it’s the song by The Pussycat Dolls! Noelle maintains the song’s sexy, flirty vibe in a slightly slower tempo with her unique vocals—and that harp, of course!

Be sure to grab a copy of Noelle Cassandra’s album—available at Odyssey, Astro, SM record bars and other leading record outlets. For more information and upcoming events, log on to www.noellecassandra.com.

What tracks did you enjoy? Be sure to let me know! :D

On a harp high,
Angel O:)
