Numbers Game: Housing Edition
Friday, April 30th, 2010Hi Candy Girls!
Over the years, I’ve lived in multiple places. Don’t believe me? Here’s proof.
2 – number of houses I’ve lived in, with both streets named after presidents
3 – number of rooms I’ve shared with other people (particularly my older sister and younger brother)
7 – number of rooms in the first/biggest house I’ve lived in, which we shared with my relatives and grandparents
16 – number of Christmases celebrated in that particular house
35 – number of steps from the house to the park—my fave hangout spot as a kid!
1 – number of toilet bowls we accidentally wrecked (there’s a reason why we call my brother The Destroyer. Haha!)
15 – number of sleepovers with friends in my cramped room
4 – number of times I’ve had to pack my life in boxes
50 – approximate number of boxes I’ve had to pack through the years
1 – number of towns/cities my family has lived in through the years (I’m a true-blue San Juan resident)
8 – number of flights of stairs I had to trek during Typhoon Ondoy
2 – number of floors that used to separate me and my sister (they lived on the 5th floor back then)
92 – approximate number of days till I move into a new place

The site of my new room. I can’t wait to see how it’ll turn out! Any suggestions?
Happy weekend, Candy Girls!

Hitting the Trails in Baguio
Thursday, April 29th, 2010Trail running combines two of the things I love to do most—mountain climbing and running. In contrast to mountain climbing, one does not have to bear the burden of a heavy backpack on one’s shoulders while trail running. And while running on the road can be a bit monotonous, the varied terrain and mountain views ensure that the runner will never get bored on the trail.
I woke up at about 4:00 am on Saturday, April 25, to participate in The North Face Trail Run in Baguio. The race began in Burnham Park at precisely 5:30 am. There were only about a hundred runners in the 22-km category giving it a feeling of exclusivity—after all, not a lot of people are crazy enough to go all the way to Baguio “to torture themselves.”
The first 10 minutes of the race proved to be a challenge as we were met with a steep, inclined road. My throat dried up and my heart beat fast as my body adjusted to the cool climate and the thin air. For a while there, I doubted if I would finish this race at all. Shortly before 6:00 am, we reached the old gate of Camp John Hay where the 11-km runners were gathered for the start of their race. They cheered us on as we jogged past and entered the trails.
Over the next few hours, we had to go through two extremes: steep ascents and sharp descents. The longer we ran down, the higher up we had to hike. It was fun to run downhill, but the instinctive reaction to slow myself down (in order to avoid rolling straight to the bottom!) made me think that my knees would pay for this later.
My favorite part of the trail was the long stretch of rolling terrain where we were surrounded by pine trees. The fresh air—and the fact that I could actually run on this part of the trail—invigorated my spirit. At certain points, we were also blessed with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.
By the last hour, I was drained of energy, like a car running on an almost empty tank. When we hit the road, signaling the last three kilometers, I gathered my remaining fuel reserves and decided to run for it (with my guy’s encouragement, of course). As we ran, we passed a few people who had opted to walk the rest of the way.
We finally crossed the finish line after three hours and 59 minutes. A friend wisely noted, “Angel, siguro you would have finished first place if you didn’t stop for all these pictures.” Haha! Well, maybe not first place, but we probably could have run a little faster. The time never crossed my mind though as I was more than happy to stop and pose—it was definitely a good excuse to rest.
One thing I learned through all my years of running is that the sport becomes more enjoyable when one has proper training and the right mindset. Then, one feels the exhilaration of running through long stretches of open road without a care in the world—or in this case, one certainly feels the thrill of the trail.

Lipstick Rx
Monday, April 26th, 2010Been so caught up in work lately that I’m feeling the need to de-stress by fixating on something that doesn’t require much thought. And today, lipstick is just what the doctor ordered. I’m currently loving Revlon’s new ColorBurst line. Classy matte casing, quilted surface, the name engraved on the stick itself, and the sleek, authoritative click every time you cap it—all so satisfying for a beauty junkie like me. (In fact I found myself capping and uncapping it several times this weekend while I was agitated over something. What a weirdo!)
Liking these shades (mauve and fuchsia), especially the mauve, which goes on really natural, in a “What? Who, me? Wearing lippie? Nah!” kind of way.

Three Things I Learned About Myself This Weekend
Friday, April 23rd, 20101) I will endure two hours of puketastic, rough waters just to see something as beautiful and idyllic as Calaguas Island.

2) I can last a day without taking a bath (gross, I know!), but I can never force myself to sleep inside a wet, overcrowded tent ever again! I really don’t think I’m cut out for any kind of camping adventure. I can only “rough it” to a certain level.

3) I still love hanging out with my longtime bestie (this was actually our first trip in years!), but I was glad to know I still had the power to make new friends in a snap. Karen says her officemates had fun with me. Yay!

What have you learned about yourself recently?

Amazing Teen: Kira Plastinina
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010Last week, Marla and I met a really inspiring 17-year-old. Dubbed in the current global fashion scene as “the world’s youngest fashion designer,” Kira Plastinina has her very own clothing line and over a hundred stores all over the world!
Kira has already showcased her designs at some of the most prestigious international fashion events. A lot of celebrities, such as Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, are also fans of her work.
It’s not all glitz and glamor though as Kira had to work hard to get where she is now. Her line is all about authentic style and diverse looks for young women her age. Kira Plastinina apparel and accessories offer funky club wear, vintage feminine style, and rock-themed ensembles. Her advice for Candy girls? “You should do what your heart tells you to do. Just believe in yourself!”
Drop by her stores at Shangri-La Plaza and SM Megamall for a dose of inspiration and a fresh, fun new look!
