Eleven Reasons…
Friday, February 26th, 2010…why you should grab the March issue of Candy!
1) We’re on our 11th year as the best-est friend you’ll ever have—so that means helping you deal with problems related to family, school, friends, and boys. This month, we focus on one special topic: your body!
2) Go the healthy route by choosing dishes that will do your body good. We’ve got 12 fab selections in our über-yummy Candy Bites spread.
3) And because we love you so much, we also rounded up the toughest questions you’ve secretly wanted to ask, and handed them over to four experts who gladly addressed your concerns.
4) This is Selena Gomez’s second time gracing the cover, and in our special feature, she shares her biggest plans for 2010 and shows you her favorite things!
5) Speaking of celebrities, the magazine is packed with star style secrets (take your pick from the likes of Miranda Cosgrove and Lauren Conrad), makeup tricks (go from day to night with Dakota Fanning, AnnaLynne McCord, and Katy Perry), and flaws they’ve learned to love (21 actresses share their imperfections—that’s a lot!). Plus, we feature the best show of the season: Glee.
6) By reading the magazine and answering this question, find out how you and your best friend can win tickets to Paramore’s concert on March 9!!! (We might give more than one pair of tickets if we get lots of entries, so keep submitting your answers/pics.)

7) Take a break from studying (we know how stressful finals week can get) and laugh out loud while reading the body-related boo-boos on Oops! It’ll make you thank your lucky stars that nothing this embarrassing has happened to you.
8) For girls contemplating on dating or letting their guys meet their parents, read “My Favorite Mistake,” “The New Ligaw Rules,” and “Meet the Parents” before making a final decision. These stories will surely enlighten you.
9) Move forward with the hippest clothes (florals, denims, brights, metallics—they’re all here!) and look your age with the best get-pretty tricks.
10) Countdown to the best summer ever by dreaming of what to do on your next trip (Life Coach), or take the proactive route by enrolling in a cool workshop based on your interests. Whether you’re an artist, an athlete, a social butterfly, or a genius, we’ve got the best suggestions!
11) As a special treat, each Candy magazine comes with one of three collectible notebooks designed by WeWillDoodle, Ben Deluyas (this is my absolute fave!), and Analog Soul.

Be a Changemaker
Thursday, February 25th, 2010Do you have an idea brewing in your head about a business opportunity that could impact your community in a positive way? Selling artwork made by street kids, perhaps? Or helping local coffee farmers in your province market their products?
You have the idea and you have a plan… but no money to implement it. Does that mean you have to give up on your dream? Not at all! You can join the British Council’s “I am a Changemaker”—a business plan competition that aims to look for young entrepreneurs who can change society for the better by spotting social problems and issues and finding innovative ways to address them.
This nationwide competition is open to organizations with members between 16-28 years of age. There will be four winners—one each from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and NCR. Each winning team will receive P100,000 as seed capital for their business proposal. Finalists will also have an opportunity to attend a four-day training course on Social Enterprise Planning and Development.
Deadline for applications is on April 15, 2010. For more information on the competition guidelines and application procedures, log on to www.britishcouncil.org.ph or call the British Council at 914-1011 to 14.
What are you waiting for? Time to turn that dream into a reality!

Moving On and Out
Wednesday, February 24th, 2010I’m not a big fan of moving. When you’re already familiar with a place—know all the ins and outs, can get home with your eyes closed, memorized all the cool places to eat there—it’s hard to just pack up and leave. But like everything else in life, time has a way of changing the way you look at things.
When we first moved from Galleria to our current office on Pioneer, I had to remember the new route to work—is it going to take me longer to get there? Concerns like “where am I going to eat lunch?!” started to pop out on the first week. What, no more favorite and familiar restos just outside the door? On top of that, Roch and I were suddenly seated a floor apart from the Candy Team. Eep. I’ll admit, I hated it. But almost two years later (and two moves), here we are happily adjusting. (:
It’s been two weeks since we moved out of our old and familiar home. Two weeks since I left Katipunan and re-learned a new route to and from work. But surprisingly, I’m not as bummed out as I expected.
There are lots of cool new places to eat where we live now—I can’t believe I can just walk to wherever so I can “eat out.” I have so many pegs for rooms because I got a go signal from my aunt that we can repaint the rooms (I want to paint everything white!).
My cousins are just a flight of stairs away (can you believe we’re 19 living in the compound? 19?!). The living room is so big—perfect for having Band Hero nights (still waiting for the Candy Team to come over and play!). I think when we find a place for my oven to squat, it’ll truly feel like home. (:
What do you love—or not—about moving? Let’s share stories!

Mia Loves Classics
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010My last high school summer (the one right before I entered college), I read John Knowles’s A Separate Peace. I loved Phineas’s character and could see myself in Gene’s. I was incredibly moved by the story, and was delighted to find a classic that I could totally relate to.

A couple of years later, I read The Catcher in The Rye, and couldn’t get enough of J.D. Salinger’s Holden Caulfield because he was such a riot—funny, smart, outrageous, and a true individual.

These days, I notice really good books are hard to come by. Don’t get me wrong, I think there are a lot of great writers out there, and there are definitely titles that can make an impressive list of all-new classics (there’s an oxymoron). But sometimes it’s not easy finding a good read in a best-sellers list. Reading a badly written book, especially one with a great plot, can be really painful and frustrating—vampire or no vampire—because you can imagine how much nicer it would be in the hands of a better author.
Lately, I’ve been delighting in new covers of old faves. These were done by one of my fave illustrators, Mary Engelbriet. They came with free pendants that matched the book’s theme. ![]()

Here’s a peek at my next-in-line pile for reading and re-reading. I’m also excited about Konigsburg’s The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World, because I loved From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler so much (Features Editor Angel loved it too!). Let me know which classics you’re loving, and which new books you consider new classics—would love to check them out! ![]()

My Weekend in 250 Words
Monday, February 22nd, 2010Woke up early on Friday, was initially cranky but felt better after a cup of coffee and a blueberry-yogurt granola bar. Listened to Shout Out Loud’s “Fall Hard” in the shower. Wore my new black dress, which I got from the Rockwell bazaar with Mia. Paired it with black and gold heels, walked to the office. Sat down at my desk and actually worked instead of just pretending to work, which I often do. Was supposed to talk to a Hollywood teen star over the phone but had problems connecting. E-mailed her my questions instead (clue: she turned 17 last week!). Had lunch at Selah with the Candy Girls, gobbled up my fish fillet with corn sauce in minutes. Headed to Ateneo to give a talk for an org called PEERS with my good friend Chris. The talk was about love and relationships and everything in between; it was hilarious. Watched The Red Shoes with Mimi and absolutely loved it. Went home to pack for a beach trip with my cousins. Woke up early on Saturday for said trip. Arrived at Laiya, Batangas. Ate, slept, and laughed until my cheekbones hurt. Played dodgeball and patintero, which was fun at first but kind of became pointless. Used the free videoke to practice for the Backstreet Boys concert this weekend (woohoo!). Sunday morning snorkeling—an epic first for me. PS: I can’t swim. Drove back to Manila. Japanese dinner with my parents, siblings, and nephew Cisco. Life is awesome if you want it to be.
