A Different Point of View

Hi Candy Girls!

Do you like reading fairy tales? I do! But I also enjoy watching remakes of these classic stories—especially the ones made by Disney. My favorites include The Little Mermaid (I was so happy when Ariel didn’t turn into sea foam because that older version made me bawl like crazy as a kid!), Cinderella (I find it cute the way Jack and Gus say Cinderelly and sing “The Work Song”), and Sleeping Beauty (there’s something magical about meeting someone “once upon a dream”).

This year, I’m looking forward to watching Princess and the Frog (it’s hilarious to think that kissing a frog would turn you into one!) as well as Rapunzel (especially since Zachary Levi is the voice of Prince Flynn!), but now I’m hearing Tim Burton is considering telling the story of Sleeping Beauty from Maleficent’s perspective! The night I found out about the possible project, I pulled out this book entitled My Side of the Story: Maleficent.

Maleficent is my favorite Disney baddie, partly because our names sound alike. But aside from that, I love her because she has an eerie commanding presence and wickedly awesome powers. The older Candy editors would tease me before and say I turn into her when I’m mad. Haha!

My Side of the Story: Maleficent is a sad tale about the trials and tribulations of a hardworking but misunderstood businesswoman. It’s funny the way Maleficent shares her side—explaining how hurt she was when she wasn’t invited to the King and Queen’s party for the baby princess, how she only sought out Aurora to help her escape her controlling parents, and how she accidentally locked up Philip when she tended to a work emergency.

I wonder if Tim Burton has seen or was actually inspired by this book. I’m sure his reimagining of Alice in Wonderland will be one crazy ride, but I’m more excited to see what he’ll do with this tale!

Friends of Friends

You know how you’ve got friends in different aspects of your life? You’ve got your classmates, your batchmates, your barkada, your org mates, your friends in the school paper, then eventually you make friends in college, and so on.

Do you ever wonder if they’d all get along with each other?

In my case, I’ve got my high school barkada, my college best buds, the Candy team, my Digital friends, and so on.

Well, I found out that even if they’re from completely different groups, they can actually be friends, too!

One of my very good friends from high school is home from Alaska. We got together for lunch last week. Roch and Steph know Mikko because we all had websites in high school (HTML skillz, yo!). I sort of introduced Mikko and Mimi through email (hahaha) so Mim could go on a Gossip Girl tour of NY while she was there for a press junket.

It was cool that my HS friend totally clicked with my friends here at work. Makes me happy that I have such awesome friends. (:

City of Angels

I started 2010 with a short but sweet press trip to Los Angeles (you’ll find out exactly what it was for in the April and May issues). It was my first time to travel abroad without my very organized mom and my very take-charge dad, so I was quite nervous about it, given my non-existent sense of direction and the fact that I pretty much look like a high school kid. After a while, though, I stopped worrying and decided I’d just wing it—ask questions if I got lost (thank God we Filipinos can speak good English!), avoid overly crowded areas, and not stray too far from the hotel.

It turns out I didn’t have to lose sleep over the trip, because I met several people who made sure I was safe and sound, and that I was having a good time. I’d like to think of them as my own personal angels in the City of Angels.

Antje from Germany, Stine from Norway, and Annabelle from Singapore. We were part of the same junket and stayed in the same hotel, and I’m so glad I met them because that meant I had an instant international girl barkada. We did so many things together in so little time: stalked celebrities, went shopping, ate yummy food, ate weird food, hung out in LA hotspots, explored the city, took the bus, walked until our feet hurt, and yes, even got into a little bit of trouble.

That’s actress/dancer Shelby Rabara and Harry Shum Jr. aka Other Asian in Glee, introducing me to burger joints In-N-Out and Fatburger. The Candy Girls and I met them last month and instantly loved how nice and grounded they were, and since they both lived in LA, I e-mailed them to ask if they were free for dinner. Thanks for the warm welcome, Shelby and Harry!

With publicist Shannon Barr, who works with the gorgeous Victoria Justice and other teen stars. We had been e-mailing since last year (she introduced us to Harry), and it was great to finally hang out with her in person.

At The Grill with Hollywood journalists Janet and Ruben Nepales, and my good friend Mykha (she’s studying at FIDM and rocking the fashion world!). Janet and Ruben get to meet huge celebrities on a regular basis (like Adam Lambert, the Twilight cast, and the Gossip Girl cast, among many others). Plus, they get dibs on invites to all the hottest Hollywood parties and major events like the Golden Globes. They are a seriously cool couple—and they’re proudly Pinoy!

Late-night 7-11 run with Mykha after a house party on my last night in LA.

I think you’ll agree with me when I say that life’s best surprises really do come in the form of people who show up exactly when you need them. Los Angeles would have been a lonely, lonely place if it weren’t for these lovely guys and girls. :)

Big hugs,
Marla

Hello, 2010!

My new years are usually off to a slow start, but not this year. This year it seems my 2009 blurred into 2010 and I hit the ground running (wedding, check. honeymoon, check. vacation and family time, check. catch up with lots of old friends, check. quality time with fur kids, check. throw shower for best friend, check. go back to work, check.) I’m finding it’s actually a great way to start a new year. Candy Girls, I hope you’re enjoying January too so far. If you welcome 2010, you can make it an amazing year for you :)

To welcome 2010, I started by doing simple stuff first, like basic grooming needs. I had my hair cut the same week as my fur kids, haha! Guess whose haircut cost more? :)

And although I had a great Welcome Back To Work Day from the Candy editors, I was also welcomed back to reality when I saw how impossibly messy my desk got while I was on leave. Today was my first day back at work, and right after a morning meeting in a conference room, I went to see my desk for the first time this year. It was scary-messy! I’m normally super particular about my work area and desk surface area, but now everything’s buried in a merry avalanche of press kits and gifts from friends and all sorts of people. Must wade through it and sort my life away. Send a search party if I don’t reappear next week! :)

Hoping to see my desk in a day or two,
Mia

Random Thoughts

Monday: Nights are surprisingly cold again. My dog must hate me for getting her a summer cut earlier than usual. She looks just like the luckdragon Falkor from The NeverEnding Story.

Tuesday: Apparently, there’s a manly forum/magazine that features stuff you lug around daily called Every Day Carry (EDC). I think I’d rather be featured in a site called “Every Day Keri.” Teehee!

Wednesday: Still upset over the whole Jay Leno-Conan O’Brien time slot debacle at NBC. I’m definitely on Team Conando!

Thursday: Is it possible not to know your own strength? In a word: YES! Our photog friend Pat accidentally stapled the CD he sent me. I took a photo as proof of his awesome superpower!

Friday: Great minds think alike. My friend Maggie and I sport similar bags and the same shirt color! We’re just two cute!

How was your week? Good? Bad? Ugly? Follow us on Twitter for more quick fun ramblings from the team!
