Playing Favorites

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Do you ever eat something until you get sick of it just because you love it so much? Or, do you listen to a song over and over because you can’t listen to anything else but that tune?

I’m guilty of playing favorites all the time—when it comes to food, music, clothes, anything! I’m listening down a few of my favorites for the past couple of days—they could totally change by tomorrow. Haha, I’m just saying. d:

As of the moment…

My favorite cover

Weezer performs MGMT’s “Kids” and Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face”

My favorite shoes

RainSkimmers from Ready for Rain/Plueys.

My favorite actress and style icon

Zooey Deschanel. Can’t wait for 500 Days of Summer!

My favorite hairstyle

Braids! Check out this cool Flickr group: Braid Wednesdays

My favorite breakfast

Peanut butter, Nutella, and Banana on toast. Yum-o!

My favorite album

Sugarfree’s Mornings and Airports. I can’t wait to watch Dekada with Marla next week! I super love “Feels Like” and “Mornings and Airports.”

My favorite song
But how long
Can a cool cat keep its calm?

The Whitest Boy Alive – Gravity

What are your favorites? Care to share, Candy Girl?

Macy :macy:

PS
My favorite picture of myself (hahaha)

Thanks to Mimi for taking this picture! Hahaha! Mwah!

One Sweet Decade

Trivia: Sugarfree has always held a special place in my heart because they were the first band I ever interviewed for Candy, back in 2004. I’ve been a Sugarfree fan since my freshman year in college, so you can only imagine how exciting that assignment was for me. They were playing a show in Ateneo, and I was supposed to do a short Q&A session with them about their album. I was a bundle of nerves hours before meeting them, but it was a good thing Ebe, Jal, and then-drummer Mitch made me feel comfortable enough to talk to them properly, without making any major starstruck boo-boos *gives my 18-year-old self a high five*.

Over the years, their songs have sort of served as my personal anthems for almost every situation, whether I’m in a steady relationship (“Tulog Na“), starting to like someone (“Ikaw Pala“), trying to get over rejection (“Kung Ayaw Mo Na Sa Akin“), wallowing in sadness (“Kwarto“), or simply getting to know someone new (“Kwentuhan“). I love how their lyrics are always honest, sometimes heart-wrenching, but never mushy or complicated. They seem like a band who doesn’t have to try too hard, and that’s what I’ve always liked about them.

This year, Sugarfree is celebrating their tenth anniversary, which means they actually share Candy‘s birthday! Their brand new album, Mornings and Airports, is all kinds of amazing—from the album art to the more energetic melodies to the lines that will make you think, “Hey, that’s exactly how I’m feeling right now.” They’re also celebrating by doing what they do best: putting on a great show for all their friends and fans. They’ll be performing with the Manila Symphony Orchestra on August 28 (Friday) and August 29 (Saturday). Macy and I already bought our tickets (Thanks, Karin!), and we’re pretty sure it’s gonna be a great evening filled with the music we love and more.

For tickets, call TicketWorld at 891-9999, Music Museum at 721-0635, or the Sugarfree hotline at 0908-8878427. You can also visit their official website, WeAreSugarfree.com. We’ll see YOU there, Candy Girls!

Big hugs,
Marla

Hey, Candy Girls!

You won’t believe this, but I just turned nine this month. :D Okay, fine. Obviously, I’m nowhere near the age of nine, but I just wanted to share this piece of amazing news: I’ve officially been working for Candy magazine for nine long years! (Wow. Now I feel ancient.)

I still remember the first day I joined the company. I went to the old Sogo office bright and early, but was shocked to discover that our EIC (it was Mia F back then) was away on a break. Clueless on what to do and where to sit, I approached another Candy editorial assistant and offered to help cut the photo transparencies (we weren’t using digital cameras back then). I was shocked when she replied with a curt “No” and resumed cutting. Yikes!

No worries though. That seemingly aloof EA (Ria F) actually became my friend, and to this day, I tease her about being mean to me on my first day. (Meanwhile, former EIC Ines mercilessly teases that I was so pa-demure that first month!) Through the years, the staff has gone through multiple changes and has evolved to a bigger, all-woman team, but one thing remains the same: they’re still the sweetest bunch ever!

Yesterday was another ordinary day at the office… until they surprised me with flowers and cupcakes. It actually felt like a debut, and I was half-expecting to hear cotillion music play over the pantry speakers. Haha!

The Candy Team 2009 minus Angel who was away at a shoot.

I found short notes attached to the roses, and genuinely felt so loved while reading them! (Candy makeup artist/writer Ta-twin Yang helped complete the 9th note.) I’m so proud to be able to work with this talented bunch of people every single day, but the best thing is simply being able to call them my best-est friends. Thank you guys for the sweet surprise!!! :cake:

Will forever be a Candy Girl,
Mimi

Bonding With My BFFs

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

One of the first things I did when I got back from the US was bond with my BFFs—who else but the Candy girls! And what better place than at the Candy BFF Camp! Luckily, I came home just in time for the event last August 2. :))

Here we are having a hearty lunch at Sango before heading to Rockwell Tent for the Camp.

While the participants were busy doing their artwork, we Candy eds amused ourselves by taking photos.

Candy Girls forever! (We missed Mimi, who was bungee jumping in Macau at the time.)

With Roland, my boy BFF :)

That’s Christine (Koko), me, Macy, Marla, and our photographer Pat!

Y, God, Y?!

The Freedom Wall was quickly filled up with your sweet messages. Thanks, girls!

After the participants played some games and the hosts introduced the BFF teams, EIC Mia led the girls in taking the Candy BFF Pledge.

But by far, our favorite part of the camp (aside from meeting you girls, of course!) was the Trigger Happy Booth! We had a blast trying on the different costumes and taking funny snaps.

You can look for your own Trigger Happy photos too at their site.

So what were your favorite moments from the Candy BFF Camp? Tell us by leaving a comment here or posting your snaps. :P

Loving my BFFs to bits,

Just Dancing with Poker Face

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009
by roch

When I heard the news about Lady GaGa going to Manila around mid-June, I was ecstatic! I first fell in love with Lady GaGa’s music when I first heard “Just Dance” around December of last year. It was playing in all house parties I went to for Christmas. And then I heard “Poker Face”… Seeing her outrageous costumes and crazy wigs made me curious on how she is live on stage. So with no hesitations, Macy, Mimi, Tatin and I booked out tickets for the Lady GaGa concert.

I must say, she is truly amazing! Her performance on stage was fantastic. Her dance moves and costumes cracked me up. I was just dancing and singing to all her songs with gusto. Though the concert was pretty short, we all had fun!

Beautiful and Dirty Rich,
Roch <3

P.S. Guess who we saw after the concert…

Candy Girl Chesca Ortega and Candy Cuties Dino Imperial and Sam Concepcion! They were also with some Star Magic stars like Megan and Lauren Young, and Chris Gutierrez. They also enjoyed the concert as much as we did. :P
