Self-Portrait

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009
by macy

I love pictures. I love taking them and I love looking at them. So when I saw this photo meme, I knew I just had to do it. Try it yourself! (:

—Macy

The Rules:
* Post ten of any pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.
* NO CAPTIONS!!! It must be like we’re speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.
* They must ALREADY be on your hard drive—no Googling or Flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you’ve saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.
* You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don’t want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

Hooked on Harry

by marla

Because I still have a Half-Blood Prince hangover, here’s a quick questionnaire for all my fellow Potterheads out there.

1. What would amortentia smell like to you?
Vanilla and coconut, coffee and cinnamon, chicken soup, garlic rice and bacon frying in the morning, freshly-washed sheets, baby powder, citrus-scented car freshener.

2. If you looked into The Mirror of Erised, what would you see?
A husband I adore who can make me laugh on the worst days, smart, talented, beautiful kids (two boys and a girl), and a shelf full of teen lit and children’s books—all written by me.

3. Which particular memory would you focus on if you had to create a Patronus?
Watching the fireworks light up the sky with my family on New Year’s Eve 2008. We were all on the brink of a brand-new life—my brother was getting married in a couple of weeks, and we all had a feeling that the changes, though they came abruptly, were going to bring wonderful things. I was standing on a Makati sidewalk on a chilly evening in a sheer sleeveless dress, but I had never felt, in the words of Ned the Piemaker, so safe and warm and loved.

4. If it was possible to accio people, who would you summon right now?
My best friend since high school, Steph. She turned 24 last Saturday, and I wasn’t able to celebrate with her because she lives three and a half hours away. Also my sister Marcy, who I haven’t seen in more than two weeks, because I have a surprise for her.

5. Where would you like to apparate to?
New York, so I can stalk the Gossip Girl cast as they film for the next season.

6. What would your boggart look like?
Being stuck in a broken elevator with a cassowary, the world’s most dangerous bird. It has long, sharp claws that can literally gut you like a fish, and I wish I were exaggerating but I’m not.

7. If you drank a vial of felix felicis for breakfast, what would happen for the rest of the day?
I’d discover a pretty new top in my closet, my jeans would fit perfectly, and it would only take two minutes to curl my hair. While getting dressed, I’d hear Owl City’s “Fireflies” on the radio, or The Scene Aesthetic’s cover of “Love Story.” I’d come up with the wittiest titles and subheads for my sections and write a moving short story in a span of one hour. All the models and celebrities and photographers I try to book for a shoot would be free and willing. I’d get a Facebook message from my crush, and a friend would invite me to an impromptu dinner. Work would be called off for the following day, which means I can stay out as late as I want to. And then David Archuleta—clad in a tough leather jacket but smiling like the total sweetie he is—would show up on my doorstep, declaring his undying, unconditional age-and-distance-defying love for me.

Post your answers in the comments section! Have a magical week, everyone! :)

Big hugs,
Marla

Mia Loves Mondays

Monday, July 20th, 2009
by mia

I’m normally not a fan of Mondays (I’m a big Fridays lover), but when I arrived at work today, I was so thrilled to see this surprise.

It was a box of pupcakes by Sonja! My boss and publisher Aueeie celebrated her fur kid’s first birthday in style by sending out pupcakes (by Sonja) to her dog Brucie’s friends. The pupcakes smelled so heavenly (all banana-ish and cinnamon-y) that I had a hard time concentrating on my e-mails. I so wanted to take a bite!

Can’t wait to bring these babies home to my fur babies. I’m sure they’ll love it!

And, funnily enough, Citré Shine sent me today this product I super love. I started using it a few weeks ago, and liked it so much that I even bought last Saturday another product from the same line (was on my way to a concert-benefit and remembered I forgot to spritz some on so I stopped by a beauty store to get a smaller bottle). It really helps tame my wild mane. And I love the citrus scent!

And to seal the deal that I now like Mondays and good things can happen to me then—I just remembered, Lifestyle Ed Marla surprised me with this yummy treat last Monday. Strawberry and chocolate—two of my fave things in one bite! Yum!

Super Six

Friday, July 17th, 2009
by mimi

Hi Candy Girls!

How are you enjoying this cozy, rainy Friday? Are you snuggling under warm blankets or are you off to the mall to catch a movie since school was suspended?

Just the other night, Angel, Marla, Macy, Mia, Patrick, and I trekked to the Power Plant Mall to attend the premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. There were quite a number of laugh-out-loud moments (watch as Ron and Harry get high under various spells), but there were also a number of scenes that made me hide under my sweater (havoc-wreaking Deatheaters and the scary journey near the end). I don’t want to give away anything, but if you’re planning to watch the flick, make sure to keep tabs on these six people!

1) Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and 2) Frank Dillane
These boys play Tom Riddle in various ages. Just by looking at these photos, you can tell there’s something nasty lurking behind those eyes. Totally creepy!

3) Bonnie Wright
She’s not exactly a new character to watch out for, but she gets more screen time this time around because of the lovey-dovey way Harry looks at her. Will Harry and Ginny finally become a couple in this flick? What say you Team Harrmione fans out there?

4) Freddie Stroma
Speaking of Hermione, there’s a cute new boy who’s out to claim her heart! The guy who plays Cormac McLaggen actually reminds Mia and I of a younger Ryan Phillippe. Even the character is as arrogant and cocky as Ryan’s Sebastian of Cruel Intentions. Read more about Freddie here.

5) Jessie Cave
Another funny character who’s hoping to score big in the love department is the lovely Lavender Brown. I found it super hilarious the way she reacted whenever Ron was around, especially in one particular train scene which you’ll have to see for yourself!

6) Jim Broadbent
I loved Jim when I first saw him play Bridget Jones’ dad (so defeated but adorable), so I was looking forward to watching him play Horace Slughorn. His scenes with Harry are quite important, so be sure to listen closely when he reveals one of his deepest, darkest secrets.

Have a relaxing early weekend and let me know if you liked the movie!

PS: Watch this Potter Puppet Pals video about a mysterious ticking noise. Funny!

Fun Times Timeline

As Angel mentioned on her previous blog, the Candy girls went to Thunderbird Resort in Rizal last Monday for the team’s planning for the 2010 issues of Candy. It was a busy and fun-filled 2 days for us and we’d like to share you how our it all went.

1:00PM – Arrival at Thunderbird Resort in Rizal

We settled down at the lobby and surfed the net while waiting for our room keys.

2:30PM – Actual Planning

Accompanied by loads of junk, we then proceeded to talk about the plans, ideas, and topics we have in mind for 2010 issues. We also talked about what’s happening for this year’s Candy Fair. We have a gazillion of fun stuff to do and we’ll make sure this year’s fair will be the best ever!

7:30PM – Rest before dinner

We played around while waiting for dinner. We also asked our resident baker and “braider,” Macy to braid our hair. We then called ourselves “The Braidy Bunch.”

10:00PM – Night Walk

After dinner, we took a short walk outside the hotel and looked at the pool. We wanted to swim but the pool is only open ’til 10PM. We went back to our rooms instead.

11:30PM – Name 15 Things

We’re not ending the night without having some fun! We divided the team into 2 groups and challenged each other if we could give 15 items of a certain category, like 15 Care Bears characters and their cousins or 15 Michael Jackson songs or 15 African-American Actors. It was super fun! All of us were super competitive and kept shouting most of the night.

1:00AM – Name That Tune

Since we ran out of categories, we just played Name That Tune instead. Props to Koko (Candy‘s new publisher) and Steph ’cause they gave the most number of Pop Love Songs and 80s Love Songs from Pat’s iTunes. He’s our photog by the way. (:

2:00AM – We then called it a night… :P

9:00AM – Good Morning! It’s breakfast time d:

10:00AM – Swimming Time!

Perfect weather to take a dip on the pool! We all enjoyed the water (except for Mia who didn’t swim) and just relaxed under the sun.

12:00NN – We packed our bags and headed back to Manila

It was really a fun trip for the Candy girls. Not only did we come up with exciting ideas for next year’s issue for you girls but we also bonded like there’s no tomorrow. This is actually the first out of town trip we had that we’re complete. More trips to come, girls! I super had fun! :P

‘Til the next trip,
Roch <3
